Forgotten medication on holiday

shoes4life · 02/08/2023 15:19

So my son is taking Citaopram, we've just arrived on holiday and he has forgotten his tablets 🤦🏼‍♀️ I called the GP to see if they could email me a prescription just for a week so we could get them here - and was told that was impossible and the doctor would be struck off for doing so 🤷🏼‍♀️
A) is this true?
B) anyone know what our options are?

Thanks @dontjudgemeagain and @KvotheTheBloodless for the support. For those who are blaming me - he's fairly newly diagnosed ADHD and has been suicidal and has an eating disorder. People might want to consider not sticking the boot in on a situation they have no idea about. I'm sick of rude receptionists being excused because it's NHS. I have a stressful job but I'd be sacked if I treated people like that.

Sorry I've got no helpful advice but keeping my fingers crossed things get sorted.

FFS why are people on here such dicks sometimes?! What exactly does your response add to the thread @NewNovember other than aiming an unnecessary kick at OP who's trying to manage a stressful situation overseas?

The op blamed her sons diagnosis it wasn't his fault.

fuckthemail · 02/08/2023 16:56

No advice but really hope you get this sorted soon. How awful for your poor son

RuthW · 02/08/2023 17:39

The NHS can not prescribe or give advice to anyone outside of the UK, so they are telling the truth.

PeterRabbitt · 02/08/2023 17:45

Knew that it would be the GP/GP receptionists/any other GP staff that can be mentioned fault as soon as I saw this thread.
Unless it's a private GP you are not a 'customer' in need of customer service and a quick Google would have answered your question.
You may be stressed and I get that, having children with conditions controlled by meds is hard and I speak from experience. But the Receptionist is not the problem here and I hope you'll recognise that when you've got your son sorted and you start to enjoy your holiday.

I did the same with some anticonvulsants when we went to the US. I went to a local pharmacy and they helped me get a Dr consultation/ prescription

tealgate · 02/08/2023 17:51

Does he have the NHS app which would show his prescription, in case he needed 'proof' of what dose etc?

User1800 · 02/08/2023 17:55

It won’t be a problem call your travel insurance people and they’ll give you the address of the nearest medical practice to be seen - I somehow lost my blood thinners in transit to the states and obviously had to have them - they just gave me a weeks worth plus 2 days, at a cost which I was able to reclaim back, in case of delays - job done - I hope you get sorted quickly OP and then you can enjoy your holiday with peace of mind.

Wendysfriend · 02/08/2023 17:58

I hope you get sorted.

One year when we were in the USA I forgot to put dd refrigerated meds in the hand luggage, I had it written down everywhere but mistakes happen.

I know it's a different country but the USA a super strict on prescribed meds so we thought we had no hope, we went to a local doctor and explained the situation and they contacted our GP themselves and arranged the prescription to be filled in the USA.

I see the always-perfect pernickety po-faced arseholes are here in force.

hope you can get sorted op. I have always found Spanish pharmacists to be exceptionally helpful.

Is that a joke? Receptionists are always pulled to shreds on here and every other platform! You think she was rude because you didn't get answer you were looking for. People do need to take responsibility sometimes and not blame others.

Go to a pharmacist over there explain what's happened and hope for the best.

No one is saying they are perfect but In cases like this if we forget stuff we figure it out instead of coming on here and ranting about the receptionist because we didn't get the answer we wanted.

The BA Amex Premium Plus card comes with a travel insurance that will organise replacement medication for you when you are abroad and have forgotten it but obviously only helpful if you have the card

otherwise I know a friend has organised a dr organised by the hotel she was staying at to issue a prescription
