to still book our DS (16) as a 15 year old at a Premier Inn?

I’m probably going to get a flaming for this but here goes.

We only have DS, he can’t stay in a PI by himself until he’s 18. If we booked him in as an adult, as he’s classed as one now he’s 16, we’d have to pay for another room. So for now, while we can still just about get away with it, we book him in as a child stating he’s 15.

In one PI where we’ve stayed many times over the years, a couple of the regular staff are aware but they’re ok with this. He doesn’t get up for breakfast so doesn’t benefit from the ‘kids eat free’ deal.

AIBU to carry on doing this for as long as we can get away with it? Not that he’ll likely still want to come away with us in the next few years.

My personal opinion is that on the one hand they class 18+ as adults but want to charge a 16 year old adult prices.

The real bargain with kids eat free is if you are on your own with 2 kids. Particularly teens. I almost felt embarrassed tbh in relation to the amount we ate for £9.

Do they even ask for your room number? I thought kids eat free also applies to walk ins.

I personally wouldn’t take a couple of hulking 17 year old twin lads down to breakfast as 15, but if others do then meh.

EhrlicheFrau · 05/08/2023 08:32

@Teateaandmoretea If you stay at a PI you can pre-pay breakfast (and dinner) when you check in, or you can opt not to if you are not sure of your plans - I have always been asked my room number at breakfast, but I think that's to double check I have pre-paid (and also to ensure a space if it's potentially busy). Obviously walk-ins may not have booked a space and definitely won't have pre-paid, but I'm pretty sure they can get the kids eat free deal too (though not 100% as only ever have breakfast if we stay).

linsey2581 · 05/08/2023 08:50

@MillicentTrilbyHiggins for PI I think we booked over the phone to explain our situation, but we tend to book with booking.com as we only book hotels near airports when we are going on holiday so tend to stay at either holiday inns or the moxy.

linsey2581 · 05/08/2023 08:54

@VioletOrange well
to be fair you are being deceitful. Considering what hospitality industries have gone through the past few years they are trying to keep afloat. You might think you’re saving some money but in fact you’re stealing money from the hotel. Just suck it up and pay the proper prices and accept that your child is entering adulthood.

I’ve never bothered to pre pay, it’s just them holding more of my money unnecessarily. I’ve always just paid when we go down.

I think it would be true CF’ery (not fraud or theft let’s keep this real) to walk in having not stayed there and lie about the kids ages. Particularly if there was only one adult.

I have opted to pre-pay, opted not to pre-pay, and opted not to eat there at all - I do whatever suits me at the time.
As for your second sentence, I've already had my say on this (in short I wouldn't lie regarding my child's age but I am not losing sleep if others do hoose to lie), so am not going round those houses again.

Walks in used to be qualify for the free kids breakfast, so unless things have changed I assume they still do. When I was working nights I'd occasionally get my mum to drop DC to me at the PI in town, get breakfast and then send them to their dads before I went home to sleep. Grin

We stayed in one after a wedding. Didn’t pay the adult rate for the room but did pay for sons breakfast. A staff member said to me that we shouldn’t have paid for his food we should have said he was 15 and they wouldn’t have questioned it.

You now have your fraudster badge of honour (according to 16% at the last count) - welcome.

DS never gets up on time for breakfast, so never takes advantage of the ‘kids eat free’ deal. He’s too busy lounging in his (not paid for) sofa bed!

In summary, DH has occasionally brought him back a croissant and jam to the room after he’s finished his (paid for) breakfast, as he’s entitled to ‘eat everything on the menu’! No rules on bringing his uneaten food back to the room.

I don’t indulge in a PI breakfast. Everyone who has called me a fraudster/liar/thief etc, will be pleased to know that over the years, until recently, we’ve paid for two adult breakfasts and I have only usually eaten jam on toast, with a coffee and juice. Therefore, I don’t bother now. A cup of tea/coffee in the room* is all I need. I buy nibbles while we’re out! 😊

*the complimentary tea/coffee in the room!

I really don't mind what you do so would certainly not give you a flaming. Unless your DS starts bringing his girlfriend you'll probably get away with it. We have 2 DC and always let them share a room.

Premier Inn worker here. We don't care. Don't trash the room, don't smoke weed inside, keep your voice down if arriving late. Enjoy your stay.

Retired, long time Premier Inn employee here- as above. !

We are a family of 6. Dcs are 13, 11, 7 and 2. We always just say we have 2 dcs and going one room. Take a travel cot foe the two year old. And a sleeping bag for my son. At breakfast 2 kids eat free per Adult anyway. We take tupperware do we have leftovers for lunch. I think a lot of people do it!
Surely that's far cheekier!

We should be shackled and paraded through the streets while the baying crowd (16%) throw leftover hash browns and tomatoes at our head’s, bowed in shame!

How will there be left over hash browns and tomatoes, when the underbellies of society are stealing them by saying their 15 year 14 month olds are not 16 year and 2 months!

Curse of society!

Why don’t you just book a family room? We have a 21 year old son who due to his asd can’t stay alone in a room so we book a family room.

Because on PI you can only book a family room online if you say there are adults and children in your party, with child being under 16.

Qilin · 06/08/2023 13:54

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 04/08/2023 20:29

Premier Inn breakfasts are not free - you pay for them separately - so it is irrelevant whether he has one or not.
I didn't know three adults couldn't share a three-bed room.
16 is not an adult, 18 is the age of majority in the UK. Your son is still a child and should be allowed to share with you.

Children can eat breakfast for free when accompanied by an adult in most PIs.

NewNovember · 06/08/2023 13:57

What I find irritating is you can't book 1 adult and 3 children in a room this causes breakfast issues as we use 2 rooms for 3 adults and 5 children which should mean paying for 3 breakfast but the system charges for 4.

Can't you book and pay for breakfast separately?

Meanoldlady · 06/08/2023 14:06

Noone who works there (myself included) care. It's 2 free children to each paying adult. As previous poster said, don't be a dick, don't smoke in the room or be noisy at night and that's it.

Pre paying means that we can guarantee you getting seated when you want but can be refunded if you don't have it.
There's a list of people who have paid by room to check against.

You can pay separately at the desk at any time during your stay which would fix any charging issues.

Hope that helps. Enjoy your free breakfast just please leave us nice 5 star reviews after.
