to still book our DS (16) as a 15 year old at a Premier Inn?

I’m probably going to get a flaming for this but here goes.

We only have DS, he can’t stay in a PI by himself until he’s 18. If we booked him in as an adult, as he’s classed as one now he’s 16, we’d have to pay for another room. So for now, while we can still just about get away with it, we book him in as a child stating he’s 15.

In one PI where we’ve stayed many times over the years, a couple of the regular staff are aware but they’re ok with this. He doesn’t get up for breakfast so doesn’t benefit from the ‘kids eat free’ deal.

AIBU to carry on doing this for as long as we can get away with it? Not that he’ll likely still want to come away with us in the next few years.

My personal opinion is that on the one hand they class 18+ as adults but want to charge a 16 year old adult prices.

And while we’re on the subject, as he’s still not legally an adult and still classed as a child, why does he have to pay adult train fares/plane fares etc? Yes there are concessions such as 16/17 saver passes etc but why can’t there just be a blanket ban on children under the age of 18, who are still classed as children IN LAW, being charged adult prices?

Exactly!

Shocked how few people view this as stealing from the company. Also sets a bad example to their offspring, who presumably are brought up to lie.

Yeah and I’ve got mine to steal as well! I actually give out punishments if I find they’ve told the truth. Little blighters won’t be telling the truth on my watch!

I’m more shocked at the corporate greed of the shareholders!

That have such low morals that they can’t see a 16 year old who has to be in full time education is a child!

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 04/08/2023 19:59

That whole anti-profits, anti-corporation, anti-shareholders, anti-landlords mentality is so sad, petulant and misguided. Imagine going through life feeling envious, hostile and adversarial toward our entire economic system.

Most people's pensions are invested in the markets, you know, so those "greedy shareholders" are friends, neighbours, relatives, co-workers, fellow citizens.

Corporations are expected and obliged to make money for their investors.

It's just as wrong to steal from them as it is to steal from the proverbial widows and orphans.

If you want systemic change to our economic paradigms, vote with your choice of which businesses to patronize, or go through the proper channels to advocate for changes to our laws.

Don't childishly try to subvert it by cheating, scamming and defrauding, then justifying one's actions by calling the other party "immoral" for perfectly ordinary and legitimate business practices.

Exactly!

Because "adult" in the law doesn't mean the same thing as "adult" in commerce. Would you be happier if they added a tier of "teen" or "young adult" prices?

Getting hung up on words is pointless. A 16-year-old is more akin to an adult than to a child in terms of how much space they take up, how much they eat, etc. and that's what pricing is based on. Again, no one is forced.

Oh give over!!

They don’t bloody give a bed size depending on age..

They’re greedy shareholders … end of!

Yes clearly if teen rate meant they could share a room and just pay for breakfast!

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 04/08/2023 20:16

Premier Inn worker here. We don't care. Don't trash the room, don't smoke weed inside, keep your voice down if arriving late. Enjoy your stay.

But it's not up to rando workers to set corporate policy. You're being paid to enforce it.

Why doesn’t it mean the same thing?

They don’t need to add different tiers, simply under 18 is classed as a child, that’s it.

It’s not about getting hung up on words, it what the law states.

You cannot bring size into it, there are so many 13-15 year olds far bigger than 16-18 year olds!

PI don’t mind, otherwise they would challenge/request proof of age at check in or during booking but they don’t. They have paying guests who return multiple times a year!

Why don’t you just book a family room? We have a 21 year old son who due to his asd can’t stay alone in a room so we book a family room.

How are they being paid to enforce it?

Do they say, I need every member in d your family to come to me with birthdate evidence? Does PI hierarchy say that? Is the policy that every person that’s staying have to be present at check in? Does PI hierarchy state that…,

You are talking absolute total nonsense!

But please do carry on, because it’s making your argument so weak!

Um, it's pretty axiomatic that employees everywhere are expected to enforce the policies of the company that employs them.

As to the meaning of "adult," as I said before, and as most people comprehend, the legal definition of "adult" for purposes of national laws and public policies is not applicable for how businesses choose to classify customers for purposes of their marketing policies.

A restaurant, for example, can limit the purchase of "child meals" to six and under, or 10 and under, or whatever they please, even though teens are technically children. A hotel can charge a teen as an adult if they please. A tour company can charge a 12-year-old passenger as an adult if it sees fit. It's a matter of marketing, not law.

It perplexes me that there are people out there who fail to understand the distinction.

Do you book them over the phone? Because there isn't an option for 3 adults in any room at all on the PI website.

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 04/08/2023 20:29

Premier Inn breakfasts are not free - you pay for them separately - so it is irrelevant whether he has one or not.
I didn't know three adults couldn't share a three-bed room.
16 is not an adult, 18 is the age of majority in the UK. Your son is still a child and should be allowed to share with you.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 04/08/2023 20:30

PI can classify a six-year-old as an adult if they want to. You don't have to like it, you can go elsewhere. We have this lovely thing called a free market. They can set whatever policies they please and we all are free to take it or leave it.

But it’s highly amusing!

We do book a family room but because DS is 16 and not 15 then we are classed as fraudsters, shoplifters, scheming liars and scammers by some.

He doesn’t even get up to scam PI of their ‘kids eat free’ breakfasts.

Then PI have the right to enforce those policies by asking for proof of age, but they don’t so 🤷‍♀️

We’re polite, courteous and patient, when the they’re short staffed we understand. We’re not demanding, we take our own glasses back to the bar, we leave our room tidy for housekeeping. We don’t complain that our towels haven’t been changed. We are WONDERFUL guests! 😀
