Can somebody help me work this out?

Bit embarrassing but maths isn’t my strong point I’m just trying to work this out

If a loan was taken out for £750 and you had repaid 15% of that already, how much would you have left to pay on it?

If there was no interest on it, you would now owe £637.50

Multiply the whole number by 0.15 to get your answer.

Something x 1 is 100% (all of it)

Something x 0.90 is 90% (you don't need the end zero, but it makes it easier to see the equivalence between percentage and decimal)

Something x 0.75 is 75%

Something x 0.20 is 20%.

To work it out without a calculator you divide £750 by 100 to work out 1%, then times it by 15 to work out the amount paid, then minus the amount paid from the amount owed.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/08/2023 10:16

The answer being how much you'd paid. Take that off the total amount.

Or you do it the same way, but looking for the outstanding amount by multiplying by 0.85, which is 85% of the original total (as 100% - 15% = 85%).

Thank you all!

Assuming there’s no interest added, you’ve paid off £112.50 and have got £637.50 still to pay.

I imagine it is frustrating that no one has given you the correct answer with workings, OP. You need to calculate 15% of 750 and subtract it off to get your answer. So:

750 x .15 = 112.50
15% of £750 is £112.50. This is the amount already repaid. The amount still owed is the difference:

750-112.50= 637.50 In context, £637.50 is still owed, as stated by @ChaChaRealSmooth

I figured it's more useful (and maybe more satisfying) for the OP to know how to work it out for herself and then be able to use that knowledge again, rather than just type a figure which could easily be wrong.

Apologies if that's seen as frustrating.

We cross posted@NeverDropYourMooncup I agree with what you said. Typing the equations took me a bit longer
