No wonder the rest of the world laughs at us Brits moaning about the weather

Just seen a clip on BBC news of an Asian bride walking down a flooded aisle after a typhoon. Everyone is smiling and just getting on with it.

Yet we are moaning about a bit of rain at the moment. We really have no resilience and considering our weather is going to get more dramatic, we need to change our mindset and coping strategies.

I don’t hear people complaining about the weather in real life. I see clickbait on the tabloid websites telling us how hot it’s going to be, how next minute everything is going to get washed away in a deluge, how giant Asian hornets are invading the South Coast.

But that’s not real life.

Most people seem to be getting on with it.

Duckerbizzle · 01/08/2023 08:10

In my (limited) experience, people from places with 'better' weather tend to laugh/take the mickey about our rubbish weather rather than laugh at the actual Brits complaining about it. Always happens during Wimbledon tournament when matches are cancelled all over the place on the outside courts due to rain, it's all "Oh, the silly Britsh weather!" Etc.
One good thing that I've found is when you're having to chat to someone you don't know very well and there isn't much to say, at least the British weather is something we can talk about, lol.

bumblefeline · 01/08/2023 08:13

It's not just us Brits, I have just come back from the Smokys in Tennessee and they were moaning there about the rain. It's something that people do.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2023 08:15

Smug posters telling people to wear the right clothes and wellies and go and splash about in puddles doesn't help either. Some of us would like to get out of our winter clothes and rain gear for a change. And the novelty of splashing about in puddles soo wears off.

The only posts I have seen about cancelling holidays are from posters who have holidays in the Med where there have been fires/is a risk of fires and people who planned to go camping in the UK/Northern Europe.

At least we aren't getting the "I hate summer" posters complaining that the thermometer has topped 17 degrees. Perhaps we should be telling them to lose weight and wear less in the heat?

I hate these ‘everyone in the rest of the world mocks and despises us’ posts.
We talk about the weather a lot because it is unusually changeable here. It’s a consequence of being a little island on the edge of a land mass. If it was always el scorchio we would have nothing to say about it.
It’s a stereotype that’s rooted in truth, doesn’t mean we need to feel defensive or embarrassed about it.
BTW my Ukrainian guest is doing an advanced English course and they had a lesson on how to talk about the weather. It was explained that if someone makes a throwaway comment about the weather you have to agree with them because they are doing it just to make small talk not for a serious discussion.

This. My SIL is Australian. Her family live in Perth. They think its hilarious that she will talk about having a BBQ if it's nice but have a plan B if its throwing it down. In Australia if you plan BBQ on the beach ,you just have one. We don't have their weather. We have to have a plan B. Very few things here are capable of killing us. Every damn thing in Australia is capable of killing you. They moan about that. We moan about the weather

tttigress · 01/08/2023 08:17

Not really sure about that I think the perception come from other countries. I currently live in Switzerland, where people refuse to do thinks unless the weather conditions are perfect.

Also myself and a German colleague were discussing the amount of rain Zurich has. We googled it, it turnout Zurich more rain on average than the UK average. So as I say it is a perception.

DarkWingDuck · 01/08/2023 08:19

My favourite type of moaning. Moaning about moaning. A meta moan.

Some of us posters run naturally warm and are heat intolerant through no fault of our own, are a healthy weight and if we wore less, we would be naked.

I actually love the weather here (in SE England) I grew up with extreme heat (cold, tornados, floods, and heavy snowfall) that made me ill and caused fainting spells as a child because the heat along with just moving around would drop my blood pressure regardless of how appropriately dressed I was for the weather.

Custardslices · 01/08/2023 08:25

I love a brew and a moan.

I'm sure countries who suffer tornadoes complain too and so on.

AngelinaFibres · 01/08/2023 08:26

I'm in a walking group. We walk twice a week on a famous set of hills . We have member who is a Hong Kong refugee. She has been through all kinds of enormous stress to get here and to be safe. Her teenage daughters are now at school here and she said they couldn't believe teachers actually wanted their opinion and accepted a different one to their own. In school in Hong Kong you agree ( outwardly) with what you are told. Dissent isn't a good idea. She doesn't come with us when it rains. She doesn't like rain. Is she a pathetic whinger too Op.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 01/08/2023 08:35

Of course she is going to smile, its her wedding and imagine the pictures if she was scowling?! That doesn't mean that she was happy it was flooded tho, does it? Im from a country where monsoon season is a real thing, ALL of us complain about it, but we carry on with our day.

ActDottie · 01/08/2023 08:41

I love the rain! The other day one of my friends cancelled on me because of the rain! We were meeting another friend too so is two just got on with it, rain and all.

Cornettoninja · 01/08/2023 08:01

OK il take it I'm wrong and I will accept it. But no wonder there is so much depression and anxiety around. It's all negative, negative, negative

hmmm, yes. Maybe talking people down and calling them embarrassing is part of the problem, what do you think? You’re not exactly bringing positivity to the conversation are you?

True

CloudyMcCloud · 01/08/2023 08:46

BatsHaveButtcheeks · 01/08/2023 08:02

For every weather moaner, there's someone like me, who's actually pleased it's not the ridiculous temperatures of the last few years, and I don't mind the rain.

The rain has stopped my grass from turning all brown so it’s only just picked up

Gets warmer next week

Anyway I’m with majority op yabu the ‘rest of the world is laughing at us’ is a bit lame and old hat

Newusernamebecause · 01/08/2023 08:48

The rest of the world doesn't care about you. What makes you think the rest of the world focuses on the British so much?
I read things like this all the time on mumsnet and it's baffling.
People from other countries are concerned about their own country/immediate area/lives. They don't concern themselves with you.

Actiongirlalltheway · 01/08/2023 08:56

Ludicrous, rest of the world laughing at us?? They were stunned 😳 that we voted for Brexit but the weather? I don't think so.....

dottiedodah · 01/08/2023 08:58

Its disappointing I think .We have a long winter and Summer makes it better somehow.Children have broken up and have 6 weeks to want to do things. We had a lovely month in June and I certainly dont want a heatwave! We have a national pastime of commenting/complaining about weather conditions here!

phoenixrosehere · 01/08/2023 09:05

You’re a bit too busy trying to get to safety to complain tbh.

itsgettingweird · 01/08/2023 09:07

I'm very resilient.

Loved and worked and travelled all over and experienced extremes of weather we don't see in the UK as well as being in natural disasters.

I still get out and about whatever the weather because I dress appropriately.

Im still gonna moan when so far summer has consisted of 3 weeks of rain Grin

UserRose · 01/08/2023 09:10

Gtry · 01/08/2023 07:23

Nearly everyone who complains has 'no reason' to then as someone is nearly always worse off. Also a lot of people aren't really complaining as such, they're just making conversation and it's something easy to 'bond' over.

This

KateJohns · 01/08/2023 09:10

This sort of thing always makes me wonder, where does it end?

We can't moan about the school holidays been a bit shit this year because the rain and weather because others have typhoons.

Well, they can't moan about typhoons because some people get Tsunamis.

That mindset means no one can moan about having a cold, cause some one has the flu.
Can't moan you broke your foot, someone broke their back.
Can't moan about having a migraine, someone has cancer.

Can't moan about your car breaking down, someone had an accident and wrote their car off and now they can't walk anymore.

Etc.

Like my dad used to say, even if someone else has a broken arm, it doesn't mean your stubbed toe doesn't hurt like bastard.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2023 09:13

Your dad was a wise man @KateJohns

WonderingWanda · 01/08/2023 09:21

I don't think people having a moan about the summer holiday weather is at all comparable to getting married in a monsoon. And also, how do you know that all the wedding guests weren't having a good old moan about the weather and their wet feet.

Parent's on here are having a moan about their European holidays being ruined by extreme heat or holidays at home being a washout and therefore requiring a lot more effort and money...and yes I know I can make them put wellies on etc but a lot of the free easy things like skate parks, picnics beach days etc become less fun and more effort in the rain!
