The ones that never get an outting, the chance to use them has never arisen.
For instance, from the many useless facts in my brain:
The phrases "Not enough room to swing a cat" and "Don't let the cat out of the bag" are actually about a whip "Cat O' nine tails" which was kept as a warning and punishment on ships.
Oh and snails can sleep for three years.
Please release some of yours.

The 11+ is based on work done by Cyril Burt but he was a fraud, who lied about his methods. His work was subsequently discredited but the 11+ still continued.

Preston bypass is part of the M6.

You're correct! The Preston bypass part is right. I misremembered the M61 bit.

Is that 64 to the 64th power?

It's 2 to the power 64 (because you start with 2 then you're just doubling it 64 times) - 18 quintillion if I recall...

Okay I googled it...

And you're right @HeyMrScott - it's more grains of rice than on earth.

You are nocturnal if you are active at night.

You are diurnal if you are active in the day.

You are crepuscular if you are active at dawn and dusk.

Snails have 1400 teeth (saw a program saying it )
Also your foot is the length of your forearm- heel towards inner elbow and toes towards your wrist

HeyMrScott · 31/07/2023 22:42

I've read the whole thread but the only fact I'm confident that I'll remember is that kangaroos have 3 vaginas.

Sadly, I can't see that one coming up on the pub quiz.

Jellyfish don't have brains but can make decisions

Considering they've been around for 650 million years (fact from Google not my brain) they seem to prove brains are overrated.

The average pet dog has a VO2 max around 3 times greater than the very best human athletes.

If you speak Breton you can make yourself understood to a native Welsh speaker / vice versa (I have done this, it’s wild)

Yes! Saw a programme on cani cross, where you run 5km with your dog, who not only runs the 5km but pulls you along as well, using a special harness - at the end the humans were all knackered and puffing, and all the dogs could have easily done another 5km.

I'm guessing the game show one is the Monty Hall problem? A well known statistical puzzle. From Wikipedia:

Suppose you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has a goat. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice?

Yes it is, but my brain cannot fathom why, and despite knowing it to be fact, I still don't believe it :)

I am fascinated by snails and I didn't know that. Wow.

I spent a long time reading that Wiki Monty Hall problem and my mind was spinning!

I gather that (some breeds of?) slugs have teeth all the way along their digestive tract, from their mouth to their arsehole.

At 2 and a half years old you are half the height you are going to be as an adult.

Sounds nuts but it's true. I checked with my 4 DCs (3 are in their 20s now) and it's accurate to within an inch or so.

It's not true. Based on that DS will be 5ft3.
Hes nearly 5ft 10 and possibly still growing.

Callipygion · 31/07/2023 22:48

Cows can walk up stairs but not down (apparently!).

So if you have stairs in your house, whatever you do, don’t let a cow in or you might not get it out again!

FrangipaniBlue · 31/07/2023 22:49

@Jewelanemone it's because the UK is almost always tilted to the right when printed on a page so that it fits more neatly - take note of where the N line is - not at the top, usually off towards 2 o'clock!

If you tilt it so the N is directly up it totally changes the perspective.

Different conspiracy theories, I don't usually discuss them as I try to convey I'm part pickle. Plus most don't have detailed perspectives of different theories.

Hawkins009 · 31/07/2023 22:51

*That I'm not half pickled by believing in them.

Cobra, as in "the Prime minister attended a cobra meeting this afternoon" is an acronym for Cabinet Office Meeting Room A.

The word used to describe the smell of rain is Petrichor.

I love this!

My son used this word in his 11+ when given a picture of a storm and asked to ‘describe the scene’.

I had to google it. He got a full scholarship 😂

Polar bears fur is actually see-through, not white.

And their skin is black

There's a word for throwing someone out of a window...defenestration. I can't imagine that I would ever need to use it.

I can name all of Santa's reindeer with ease thanks to learning it in primary school some 40 years ago

MavisMcMinty · 31/07/2023 23:06

Defenestration is one of Putin’s preferred methods for offing his opponents.
