To rather not have known? (Job interview related)

Just got a call saying I didn’t get my idea job after what I thought was a good interview, I’m gutted.

But I was told my interview was really good and they really liked me and that I would be a really good fit for their team, but someone scored 0.5 of a mark better than me in the interview questions. So therefore they got the job over me, essentially I am 3rd runner up as there were two posts to fill.

I know the intentions was to make me feel better about not getting the job and the lady was so so nice about it, but I think it has made me feel so much worse and shit knowing it was within reaching distance and I missed out by such a small amount. I feel like a ‘sorry you were nice but it’s a no’ would have been easier to process.

Argh I know it’s not personal rejection but just gutted and feel like crap!

AIBU to feel this way?

Keep your chin up, it might still become available! People do drop out and they would go straight to you as 2nd choice. Plus they'll remember you and you can apply for more positions there.

OP I was interviewed for a job, and was beaten by a colleague by 1 point. 3 months later they moved him to another area and I was offered the role. Don’t give up!

My sister was once told at feedback you are such a good fit we are looking for someone exactly like you... Unfortunately just not you

YABU - most people like to know why they failed and how they can improve their chances next time.

It sounds like you did brilliantly, despite not being hired, so I'd take it positively! And bone up on the technical Qs for next time 😉

Or the candidate turned the job down. I’ve turned two down in recent weeks.

man’s I know a couple of friends who have also turned jobs down. People usually provide references with the confidence that they will provide a good reference.

Twice I have missed out like this. Both times I was called back for another job at the same place and got that.

Also one of the jobs was given to a lady who already worked there so I think that affected my chances. Sometimes they advertise because they legally have to but have a candidate in mind, then you come in and set the cat amongst the pigeons.

I think I would write (letter or email, not sure but maybe a real letter?) to the lady who called you. Thank her profusely for her time, kind feedback etc and reiterate that if another post became available that you would be very interested and to please bear you in mind.
