How can anyone be so evil. I’m really struggling to watch it.

I have just finished it. So so awful, I cannot understand how someone can be so evil.

user1471517900 · 30/07/2023 20:18

Is that the one about oxen?

RosieBurdock · 30/07/2023 20:19

Yes. I found a documentary I saw about it even more disturbing as they showed a video Ben made of Peter drugged and struggling to say he used to be competent. It was heartbreaking. How can someone be so cruel!

Bodybop · 30/07/2023 20:19

could you summarises the show in 6 words and offer it a rating out of 10?

MissHoollie · 30/07/2023 20:20

The documentary is V v disturbing.
It's sort of fly on the wall of his arrest and questioning etc

Figmentofmyimagination · 30/07/2023 20:20

No it’s about elder abuse by a sociopath curate. A true story.

He used to hide his things and delete his phone contacts etc so he thought he was losing his mind.

Bodybop · 30/07/2023 20:21

Oh so not a made up thing, I will avoid then sounds grim

Cochecito · 30/07/2023 20:21

Ben Field is a psychopath, very very disturbing.

midsomermurderess · 30/07/2023 20:22

Oxen😃

Young man two lonely elderly people, death. (ok, 7).

OwlBabiesAreCute · 30/07/2023 20:23

I watched about 2/3 of the first episode, skipped the second as couldn't bear to see any more abuse and then watched the police investigation in the last two episodes.

Timothy Spall's character was heartrendingly appallingly treated, it was dreadful to see.

Patcherdog · 30/07/2023 20:24

It's disturbing but very well done. Definitely worth watching. Ben is so awful and cruel.

WithIcePlease · 30/07/2023 20:24

I stopped watching after 30 minutes with DH when he said 'do you really want to watch an old man being abused?' Glad I did seeing this.
Fabulous cast though

harriethoyle · 30/07/2023 20:29

It was harrowing but extremely well done. I wondered if the families were a) involved and b) found it comforting ie for Ben Fields to be exposed in mainstream media rather than just Court and news reports. I don't know how I would feel in their circumstances.

LakeTiticaca · 30/07/2023 20:32

It was very gripping. The young man playing Field was brilliant, so sinister!!

You’ll probably remember the crime/his conviction if you Google Ben Field.

Timothy Spall and Anne Reid are just spectacular.

dottiedodah · 30/07/2023 20:39

Harriethoyle Peters brother was writing in the telegraph, he said they wouldn't be watching as it Brought it all back.however he was pleased it was made. I thought it was absolutely excellent but terribly sad.both he and Ann his neighbour were shy people who thought they had a last grip of love only to be the opposite.

Orphlids · 30/07/2023 20:43

I was so impressed with Éanna Hardwicke’s performance as Ben Field. He was extraordinary. It made me wonder if he’d had the misfortune to have had close dealings with someone like Field in real life. His mannerisms and tone and inflection in his voice reminded me so much of a close family member who is psychopathic. The poor victims and families. Well done to the niece for her bravery. He would have gone from victim to victim relentlessly had he not been stopped.

Cochecito · 30/07/2023 20:48

@Orphlids you have a psychopath in the family?

LostBiro · 30/07/2023 20:50

Agree, it's awful. But the programme was brilliantly made and with superb acting. I'd never heard of the case before this dramatisation.

i agree. He got the deadness behind the eyes and the flatness of tone. Every emotion is acted rather than genuine. Every reaction is premeditated. I found him almost unwatchable, he was so creepy in such a banal way.

I'm sorry you have a psychopath in the family Orphlids, but fascinated that you found his performance accurate.

We did the same. Decided it was only going to get more depressing.

EffYouSeeKaye · 30/07/2023 21:08

It is hard to watch. Brilliantly written and portrayed by the phenomenal cast.

It was upsetting to watch throughout (inevitably I suppose) but particularly so when I reflected in the 3rd episode that, on top of being preyed upon by an inhumane wretch, the privacy of the victims (and their families) was being blown apart by the dramatisation of their story.

That said, I read an interview with the writer, who stated her specific intention was to focus on the victims and not glorify their killer, which I think she achieved magnificently.

I also think the acting by Éanna Hardwicke was just wonderful. Completely blew my mind when I Googled him and realised he was in fact Irish and I’d seen him in Normal People a couple of years ago.

It was awful to watch but so amazingly done. Must have been absolutely harrowing for the families.
