For 1/2 pint of coke at a pub/restaurant is taking the biscuit? And no, it’s not London (but within 80 miles of)….

I think that’s even a bit steep for a pint, but for 330ml that’s insane!

Proper coke out of a bottle or that spray hose crap? Either way YANBU. But try to think of it as a minor bump on the road to the sunlit uplands of post Brexit Britain.

WhateverMate · 30/07/2023 16:34

Yes, I wouldn't have paid it.

MollysBrolly · 30/07/2023 16:37

A small bottle of 7up is an eye watering £2:35. Right piss take

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 30/07/2023 17:09

That is a lot. Typical now though tbh. Went to a certain visitor attraction last week - in the midlands - and me and DH had a cappuccino each. Cost £7.50. (£3.75 each.) And it was a paper cup, and just out of a machine like in Morrisons Cafe or Maccies. It wasn't a proper one like Starbucks or Costa make... They didn't even put chocolate on it.

We had a 2-bar kit kat each that I had in my backpack for a snack. We were going to have a muffin or cookie at the cafe but they were £3.50 each! So 2 hot drinks and 2 muffins would have cost £14.50. Outrageous! After seeing the price of the hot drinks, we decided against the muffins and cookies, and hid in a corner at the back of the cafe and ate our own kit kats!

I am sooooooo glad that we have no children at home now, and they've left some years ago. I don't know how people manage with kids now to be honest, with the price of everything!

UpUpUpU · 30/07/2023 17:16

It’s obscene. I went food shopping the other day and my son was thirsty. We went to the cafe and he want a ‘cooler’ off their summer menu. £3, but thought that wasnt too bad for that kind of drink. Turned out It was cordial, Ice and tap water!

DogDream · 30/07/2023 17:23

A lime and soda used to be a cheap pub drink and now even they’re expensive.

LaylaLjungberg · 30/07/2023 17:25

Unless that drink comes with a seat and an incredible view to enjoy it’s a complete piss take.

LolaSmiles · 30/07/2023 17:29

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps
That's extortionate.
I paid £3.40 this morning for a lovely cup of coffee at a local independent cafe. It's more expensive than other places but the coffee is always good, the food is fresh and nice, and it's generally a quiet cafe where the children who do attend are with parents who expect them to behave (so no running around, no shouting, no videos on phones/iPads).

Coffee and cake is definitely not the cheap
option any more. Seems like over £3 is the new norm for both soft drinks and hot drinks - ruinous if you add pester-power cake too! Was at an English Heritage place recently who were offering money off the cafe if you’d paid entry in July/August … but turns out the discount is actually for a cafe visit in September. Didn’t spot that clause until the kids had chosen and we were at the till…

Thunderpunt · 30/07/2023 17:32

I can get an Aperol or Campari Spritz accompanied by some olives and peanuts for that price in some parts of Italy.....

HavingYouAround · 30/07/2023 17:33

Seems to be around that price everywhere now. I paid £4.50 for it in one bar here. 😬

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 30/07/2023 17:35

You're not just paying for the liquid in the glass, though. You're paying the increased rent and power bills, tax, the wages of the people who work there, the fuel for the delivery of the coke to the pub and the wages of the driver, and so on. Then when those people finish work and want to go for a drink, they need higher wages to get it. And round we go in inflation hell.

Truemilk · 30/07/2023 17:36

I paid £5.20 for a starbucks takeaway coffee the other day lol never again!

I think I got a bargain with my costa cappuccino (medium size) at £4.25!

I could have cried... but needed it!

ActDottie · 30/07/2023 17:45

Seems about right to me I paid £4.90 for a pint of lemonade the other day.

Forwardthinkinglobster · 30/07/2023 17:47

Not from a bottle - a spray hose into a glass at the pub!

OP posts:
gogomoto · 30/07/2023 17:49

Seems about normal, you are paying for using the facility as well which isn't costing any less whether you drink beer, wine or coke

Forwardthinkinglobster · 30/07/2023 17:58

Just to add that I want to support local establishments and I can imagine the challenges behind the scenes. However the majority of people that frequent the pub come to eat, so the average transaction value is already quite high. I paid it and will go my merry way, but as you’re saying, perhaps this is the average now!

Readyplayerthr33 · 30/07/2023 17:59

I paid £3.55 for one of those small glass bottles of coke at the cinema the other day.

CrowleyAndHisSexyWalk · 30/07/2023 18:05

Re coffee - this is why, even with the cost of the machine first - a nespresso machine pays its way quite quickly compared to 4 (2 each) 'proper' coffees a day, 5 days a week! Our daily brew costs us 65p per go (we recommend Melozzio Boost!!)

EmpressSoleil · 30/07/2023 18:07

My best ever investment was a decent coffee machine. I nearly never buy coffees out now. Its just got ridiculously pricey. But I do love a good coffee.

The cinema will do you over on anything.

Sounds about normal where I am op.

TweetyMcTweetFace · 30/07/2023 18:37

Went to a cafe the other day, in Swansea. It was £4.95 for a 220ml bottle of diet coke.

(I didn't have one, obviously! Was just stunned at the price.)

AnneElliott23 · 30/07/2023 18:42

And this is why my trusty flask now comes everywhere with me, even on the bus to work in the mornings...the only time I'll give in occasionally is if I've run out of teabags/coffee/sugar/coffee mate in my little plastic Sistema boxes, and then it has to be Greggs or similar.

I honestly don't know how people on ordinary wages with kids are managing these days.

mogsrus · 30/07/2023 18:54

Why people buying stuff from cafes etc are always stunned at the price, when if these same people ran such an establishment, they after doing all the sums , ie rates. power, staff it all adds up, even if the room is empty, the bills still keep coming. Prices are always advertised so if you think it’s outrageous go somewhere else after all no one forced anyone to go in.
