For 1/2 pint of coke at a pub/restaurant is taking the biscuit? And no, it’s not London (but within 80 miles of)….

I think that’s even a bit steep for a pint, but for 330ml that’s insane!

I tried a new to me independent cafe. Not town centre, but in a busy area. I drink decaff and was told there was an extra charge for decaff! I could just about live with that for ground decaff, but then I spotted my "latte" being made with a spoonful from a jar of bog standard instant decaff nescafe, with some foamed milk. Won't be going there again!!

IncompleteSenten · 31/07/2023 14:02

Cost of the drink plus utilities plus rent plus business rates plus other taxes plus wages and associated costs plus furniture and equipment plus depreciation plus advertising plus insurance plus training plus accountant/bookkeeper and other professional services plus (probably) loan repayment for start up costs plus licences plus legal costs plus website costs plus office costs plus stock plus cost of wastage plus bank fees plus servicing and maintaining equipment plus plus plus.

A lime and soda used to be a cheap pub drink

I often order this and it can be £1 - £1.50. When they try to charge me £2.50 for this if it's from the pump it's a no from me. Blatant profiteering, it costs them next to nothing if they don't crack open a bottle of soda and there's no way it should be the equivalent of £5 a pint. That's more than beer around here!

Dinopawus · 31/07/2023 14:05

I agree people will vote with their feet. I don't eat out that frequently and always used to accept the cost of expensive food & drink when out and about as part of the day out.

Not so much now though. I paid north of £40 for hot drinks, sandwiches and a cake each for 3 of us recently and that's not something I can afford as a regular thing. I understand the horrific costs of running a business, but there are no profits without customers.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 31/07/2023 14:05

It's on the expensive side but wouldn't have made me raise an eyebrow. Drinks are very expensive now.

@Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie

I actually did this face Shock when I read that! That's outrageous!

I know Spoons is hated on here but it's 37p for a lime and soda in there or about 75p for a pint.

I went to a well known chocolate factory in Birmingham with the kids last week. I am glad I took a picnic because I was so shocked as to how expensive it was.

I bought 2 packs of wotsits and paid £3.20, I was so shocked! A hot chocolate was just short of £6.00!!!

The only positive was I could refill the water bottles with drinking water so no extra cost there but the prices were through the roof!

Shufflebumnessie · 31/07/2023 14:24

A few weeks ago I went to our local pub for the first time in years (friends leaving drinks). I was shocked at the prices. Half a pint of Pepsi (with a load of ice in, so hardly any Pepsi) was £3.55! The food options were very limited and a main meal was about £20 for a vegetarian pasta dish ( a friend ordered it and it was a very merger portions). I ended up ordering a bowl of chips and some garlic bread and that was over £10.

We had a day at Legoland on Saturday (thanks to Tesco Clubcard). We took a picnic and promised the children ice cream. We made the mistake of going in to the Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop and didn't look at prices (lesson learned!). £20 for 4 single scoops of ice cream in a tub, not even a cone!!

bellsbuss · 31/07/2023 14:27

We went to an ice cream van at a festival on Saturday £12 for 2 cones with a flake, I told my children they had to eat every last bit

woodhill · 31/07/2023 14:30

The festivals are annoying when you can't bring stuff in

Mind you the ice creams with flakes were only £3.50 which was reasonable

That is a lot. Typical now though tbh. Went to a certain visitor attraction last week - in the midlands - and me and DH had a cappuccino each. Cost £7.50. (£3.75 each.) And it was a paper cup, and just out of a machine like in Morrisons Cafe or Maccies. It wasn't a proper one like Starbucks or Costa make... They didn't even put chocolate on it.

We had a 2-bar kit kat each that I had in my backpack for a snack. We were going to have a muffin or cookie at the cafe but they were £3.50 each! So 2 hot drinks and 2 muffins would have cost £14.50. Outrageous! After seeing the price of the hot drinks, we decided against the muffins and cookies, and hid in a corner at the back of the cafe and ate our own kit kats!

I am sooooooo glad that we have no children at home now, and they've left some years ago. I don't know how people manage with kids now to be honest, with the price of everything!

Chocolate and coffee is vile you got off lightly.

ManchesterLu · 31/07/2023 15:05

Considering I can feed me and DH, including all food and drinks, for a day at home for less than the price of that, yes, it's obscene.

spotnoodle · 31/07/2023 15:48

Interestingly here in dublin, most of the cinemas have lowered their ticket prices to about €7 (€6 for seniors) which i thought was a clever way to bring in more money but in a reverse way. The cinema i go to is always busy nowadays.

I once got charged £12 for two similarly sized soda and lime, of which 50% of the cup was ice. The guy behind the bar poured them then told me the price. Me and my sister checked we'd heard properly, looked at each other and just went "nah you're alright" and walked off without our drinks!

A pub in Brighton charged £4 for half a pint of lime & soda for my DGD a few weeks ago, and £8+ for a child-sized roast dinner.

The bill for 2.5 roasts and 3 drinks was well over £60. And it cost £4 to park, as the pub didn't have a car park, despite being nowhere near the seafront/town centre.

The food was shite, too.

CarlaH · 31/07/2023 16:11

I assume these places are trying to recoup the losses made when they were closed during the pandemic.

Zippedydodah · 31/07/2023 16:17

One local pub charges £10.50 for a g&t! I had no idea what the going rate is. Apparently the drinks there have variable prices according to who’s behind the bar 🙄
It’s no wonder we never go to it!
