For 1/2 pint of coke at a pub/restaurant is taking the biscuit? And no, it’s not London (but within 80 miles of)….

I think that’s even a bit steep for a pint, but for 330ml that’s insane!

Fancy coffee machines are no good to anyone when they are sat in your kitchen and you are out and about.
Sorry for the passive aggressive post but everyone knows that drinking and eating at home is cheaper, so these posts are just pointless .

GreenMarigold · 30/07/2023 19:05

I totally agree that most places really take the mickey with their cafe prices, on top of crazy costs for entry. I’m in the South East and begrudgingly have got used to feeling ripped off everywhere I go.

However I went to a cafe at a local nature reserve yesterday and was stunned to see their very reasonable prices. I couldn’t believe it!

fruit shoot - 60p
large cup of tea - £1.50
cakes, rocky road etc - £1

It's not pointless, you're not getting the point.

Before I had a decent coffee machine I would often go to coffee shops because I like a latte or a cappuccino but you can't recreate a good one with a kettle. So I would just go out for coffee and cake. Now I don't need to.

When I'm out and about it's easy now to think oh I'll just have coffee when I'm home rather than being tempted. So yes obviously my coffee machine can't make me a coffee when I'm out but now I'm less inclined to stop for one unless its a full on day trip.

Walkacrossthesand · 30/07/2023 22:41

While we're talking about over-priced things - I found out recently that it would cost £110-£120 for a family of 2 adults, 2 children, to visit a Sea Life Centre! Bloody hell! I imagine that a couple of hours there is plenty - all indoors, less varied than a theme park, so you probably wouldn't even spend the whole day there!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 30/07/2023 22:42

It was £3.25 for a can of soft drink at a national trust cafe in Yorkshire today

Thunderpunt · 30/07/2023 17:32

I can get an Aperol or Campari Spritz accompanied by some olives and peanuts for that price in some parts of Italy.....

This! In nice cities in Spain we would pay this for a coke in a lovely cafe on a cobbled street with some snacks. I think we are being had. Does everything really need to cost this much ?

Avalovelace · 30/07/2023 22:53

Went to the South Bank Centre the other, so peak tourist area. One of those little pre-mixed cans of G&T? NINE QUID.

And this is why my trusty flask now comes everywhere with me, even on the bus to work in the mornings...the only time I'll give in occasionally is if I've run out of teabags/coffee/sugar/coffee mate in my little plastic Sistema boxes, and then it has to be Greggs or similar.

I honestly don't know how people on ordinary wages with kids are managing these days.

Honestly I just make sure I bring everything from home. I keep a snack box in the car with bottled water, cereal bars type stuff, nuts, fresh fruit every day. If dc want icecream we get a box from the Co-op for £2. Coffee from home. Absolutely no more fish and chips at the beach.

My kids are quite easy to please so cycling or paddle boarding down at local loch are free as we have the kit already. swimming pool ( free as pay for swimming lessons) and library when it’s too wet

Im sure it’ll be a bit rubbish going back to school as everyone will of been on fabulous holidays and they haven’t been more than ten miles from the house!

perenniallymessy · 30/07/2023 23:14

The Vue cinema wanted £6.25 for a frozen tango. We didn't get one. And £5.99 for a teeny cup of m&ms. I know cinema snacks have always been expensive but even my 11yo was horrified at the cost.

Our local shopping centre has a pretzel stall- the pretzels are £5.25. It's bread! Costs so little to make them I'm not sure how they can justify the cost, makes the Krispy Kreme shop across from it seem really good value.

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/07/2023 23:36

That price is insane. But it has always been that soft drinks are more expensive per pint that lager/cider etc. Thats why it always pays to be the designated driver on NYE if you are teetotal as a lot of place offer free soft drinks!

I agree on the Nespresso thing. Got a £45 a month subscription that (at the time) came with a machine for £1. Paid for itself within 2 months as I was spending £90 a month on one takeaway coffee a day. Am dropping down to the £30 a month when this one ends as I have more than I can drink!

coxesorangepippin · 30/07/2023 23:36

It's just so off putting

Idtotallybangdreamoftheendlessnotgonnalie · 30/07/2023 23:40

I once got charged £12 for two similarly sized soda and lime, of which 50% of the cup was ice. The guy behind the bar poured them then told me the price. Me and my sister checked we'd heard properly, looked at each other and just went "nah you're alright" and walked off without our drinks!

Bought DD a massive pretzel in Harrods last summer when went for a rubberneck at how the other half live, it was £4!

PyongyangKipperbang · 30/07/2023 23:42

I should add that I thought that £4 wasnt exactly cheap but it was Harrods so.....

£5.25 is outrageous!

Iprefertobeasleep · 30/07/2023 23:46

Local Indian restaurant charged me £6.20 for 2 halves of lemonade, which were poured out of a 2 litre bottle of Schweppes. The exact same bottles of Schweppes lemonade were being sold at 2 for £2 round the corner at the local Spar.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 30/07/2023 23:49

I paid £4.30 this morning for a latte. I'm still bitter about it. Didn't help that the barrista was rude too so didn't even have a pleasant experience whilst there, urghhh.

kittensinthekitchen · 30/07/2023 23:55

I was at a festival the other week that wanted £12.50 for a 25ml shot of tequila.

Dixiechickonhols · 30/07/2023 23:56

If you have a three mobile phone then you get one drink a week for £1 at cafe nero on the 3 app.
Growing up my parents and grandparents would always take a flask. I do sometimes.

caringcarer · 31/07/2023 00:04

If you can find a Wethersoons not closed down they still sell unlimited hot drinks for £1.20 and the coffee is Lavazza. I take DS for breakfast every Saturday morning. He has a sausage, bacon, a runny fried egg, 2 hash browns, baked beans and a slice of toast with a refillable hot chocolate all for only £3.99. I have a small breakfast of sausage, bacon, 1 runny fried egg, baked beans and 1 hash brown plus unlimited hot drinks for £2.98. The pub we go to has parking and the friendly waitress always has a smile. I just hope this pub doesn't close down it is always busy when we go.

RosieRainbow1986 · 31/07/2023 00:07

I couldn't believe the cost of syrup recently...£1.20!!!! I ordered a flavoured latte and a diet coke which came to £9.50! Crazy! So in a way to save a little I've bought my own small bottle of syrup and keep it in my bag!

Surely2023IsTheYearForMyRainbowBaby · 31/07/2023 00:12

I got a cream soda from our local premier inn restaurant. £3:49 that fucker cost me out of a can. I watched the lass crack it open and pour it into a glass. And it never came with the garnish of strawberries and strawberry syrup that it was meant to come with.

RicherThanYews · 31/07/2023 00:17

That's a terrible price but then again, I paid £4.50 for a wafer thin slice of Victoria sponge in Cardiff museum a few months back ..

I was actually talking about the days out or the weekends away when you can't wait until you get home for a coffee or food . It's like pointing that the glass of wine you paid for when out with friends cost a fortune and then someone helpfully pointing out that they could have paid a fraction of the price at home 😁 well obviously.
My DM smuggles in her own vodka when she goes out, but that's a different story.

Nat6999 · 31/07/2023 04:13

I saved ds £20 a week by buying a coffee machine, I even bought some of the paper coffee cups so he could walk to school with a coffee & look like he had bought it on the way.

perenniallymessy · 31/07/2023 07:15

@PyongyangKipperbang they aren’t even massive pretzels, DS would be done with it in about three bites (about six bites for a normal person).
£5.25 is daylong robbery but there’s always a queue. Baffling!
