To think it's not a Roast Dinner if there are no potatoes of any form!

Prompted by a comment I've just seen about a roast dinner being just meat and veg as there are already enough carbs in the carrots and parsnips 😫

I would have a mini breakdown if I was served that. When will this madness end?

This thread needs a trigger warning. I am reporting it.

LoobyDop · 30/07/2023 17:33

I think some people might need some clarification here. You can have roasted meat with things other than roast potatoes. I sometimes do roast chicken with rice, or couscous, especially if I’ve rubbed the chicken in some kind of spice blend. That’s fine, and it can be a really nice meal.

What it is NOT, is a roast dinner. Roast dinner is beef, pork, lamb of chicken, roasted in a traditional English style, and accompanied by roast potatoes, vegetables and gravy.

Ha! My roast chicken is in the oven. I've covered it in cumin paprika garlic and lemon and having it with jasmine rice and roasted carrots and broccoli and maybe flat breads..

Sounds nice but in no way shape or form is this a "Sunday roast"

TheIsleOfTheLost · 30/07/2023 17:39

I wouldn't miss the meat part of the roast as long as I had roast potatoes, Yorkshire veggies and stuffing. Then the next day microwave gravy granules in a mug and have with the leftover potatoes and Yorkshires. The potatoes are the main element of 2 days of meals!

SmudgeButt · 30/07/2023 17:45

Are you serious? Why does anyone need any meat for it to be a roast dinner?? I mean really!!! Surely you should be fine with just a small carrot divided into 6 portions and a bit of warm water poured over it in place of gravy (yuck!!!). And please don't insult my cooking by wanting any salt or pepper on it!!

red78hot · 30/07/2023 17:46

My mum used to do a jacket potato instead , criminal if you ask me 😅.
She does frozen roast potatoes, frozen parsnips and frozen batter in tin yorkshires, whereas I do the joblot from scratch.

isthismylifenow · 30/07/2023 17:52

Maybe they typed parsnip instead of potato.

The only reasoning for this monstrosity.

Or they are Banting.

If neither, then I have lost all hope for what the world is coming to.

Definitive answer from Wikipedia.....

Therefore must be FACT

To think it's not a Roast Dinner if there are no potatoes of any form!
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/07/2023 18:04

Just roast potatoes will do for me - we’re having them tonight (lots) with roast pork.

As for brown rice instead, words almost fail me. Such people give ‘healthy eating’ a bad name and should be put in the stocks outside Tesco’s and pelted with ordure.

LlynTegid · 30/07/2023 18:05

@LoobyDop I think has it about right.

ALongHardWinter · 30/07/2023 18:07

I thought mashed potato was bad enough with a roast dinner, but no potatoes at all?! 😯

caringcarer · 30/07/2023 18:15

Ginny26 · 30/07/2023 15:14

Need potatoes! It's a must 🥔 mash and roasties!! Yorkshire pudding and stuffing also!

Definitely this. Plus lots of hot gravy.

orangeyeahthatsright · 30/07/2023 18:16

How long has mash and roast potatoes been a thing, btw? I'm pretty sure it hasn't always, but I've been noticing it in carveries etc recently. Feels like overkill to me, plus I don't think mash goes with a roast personally. Sounds like I'm in the minority though!

CatsSnore · 30/07/2023 18:20

I'd prefer a ton of roasted parnsips and carrots to a potato too! I make bloody excellent roast potatoes but I'm really not bothered about them. I am a bread and pastry fiend rather than potatoes/pasta/rice.

It certainly has in Ireland.

This is the most shocking thread I've seen on MN in a long time.

itsmyp4rty · 30/07/2023 18:31

A roast dinner needs roast potatoes. End of.

CatchMeQuick · 30/07/2023 18:34

We are all doing low carb but we have a roast dinner every Sunday so this is our carb day so we can have roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings :)

DinoMummsy · 30/07/2023 18:35

The roast potatoes are the main event, followed closely by the gravy. Just sounds like a plate of sadness otherwise...

manontroppo · 30/07/2023 18:41

I am one of those people who says “oh I couldn’t eat that much”, routinely eats “massive salads” and believes in penis portions ( or at least portions that reflect manual activity).

I would RIOT if a roast came with anything other than roast potatoes. And no, mash or pommels dauphinois is NOT acceptable.

isthismylifenow · 30/07/2023 18:42

😂

This sums it up!

ScentlessAprentice · 30/07/2023 18:45

Mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, marrowfat peas and rivers of gravy. There is no acceptable alternative

Bouledeneige · 30/07/2023 18:51

You are of course perfectly correct. Roast potatoes are essential.

I once went to my sisters and her roast had no gravy as she didn't like it. Sacrilege!

Highlyflavouredgravy · 30/07/2023 18:52

A roast dinner needs roast potatoes.
You can have roast chicken with other things- like with rice or whatever but it's not a roast dinner.
We don't do mash just roast.

Mine is in the oven now. Chicken with garlic and fresh thyme inside, roast potatoes and a cabbage fresh from the allotment cooked with bacon and onion. Will make real gravy from the meat juices.

isthismylifenow · 30/07/2023 18:54

Look I'm potato fan. Roast being right up top. Next would be mash.

But not together 👀

Is this a Northern thing? As I lived in the UK South briefly and I don't remember having these two together, even when having a roast meal out.
