To think it's not a Roast Dinner if there are no potatoes of any form!

Prompted by a comment I've just seen about a roast dinner being just meat and veg as there are already enough carbs in the carrots and parsnips 😫

I would have a mini breakdown if I was served that. When will this madness end?

Growing up, we always had boiled and roast pots with dinner on a Sunday. No idea what the thinking was behind that, never seen it anywhere else. Mind you, your plain boiled potato is a pretty rare beast these days (and rightly so, probably).
Anyway, my parent’s weird ways haven't afflicted me in adulthood and I only ever do roasties. Even new potatoes feels like a cop out.

That's honestly the worst thing I've ever read on here (and I've been here years!).

I expect that poster is a troll or a chatbot type. No-one actually thinks a no potato roast is acceptable.

I agree.

I honestly think anyone who says they don’t have potatoes with a roast is just lying.

If they are lying or they don’t include them in a roast then they’re doing it for attention and should be ignored.
(I do feel sorry for their DP and DC if this is the case).

Oh it’s the potatoes aren’t a vegetable brigade 🙄

It’s a fucking vegetable.

I wouldn’t mind if they were all whippet thin but the ones I have worked with haven’t been because biscuits are definitely on the menu.

My friend’s Jamaican and their family roasts consist of roast potatoes, mash potatoes, rice, plantains and yorkshires - it’s literally carb heaven.

Not 1 of them are overweight.

Sewingdufus · 30/07/2023 16:37

A roast is roast meat, roast potatoes, a veg and gravy, without those it’s not a roast. More veggies can be, and usually are, added.

happyasaseagullstealingchips · 30/07/2023 16:39

Roast, mash AND croquettes but I'm Irish so it's allowed.

SamW98 · 30/07/2023 16:43

I’d be quite happy if my roast dinner was just a plate of roast potatoes drowning in gravy and nothing else

AuntieMarys · 30/07/2023 16:43

I never cook a roast, but if I have one out, I give the potatoes to dh. Not a fan of potatoes except new ones. Veggies on the other hand.....

OneCup · 30/07/2023 16:45

In my eyes, potatoes are the worst part of a Sunday dinner so I'm with your friend. I find them all tasteless.
Just love going abroad and not being served potatoes everywhere.

x2boys · 30/07/2023 16:46

MsVestibule · 30/07/2023 15:17

FFS. It's not a roast until there are at least 2 different types of potatoes, preferably mash and roast potatoes. And Yorkshire puddings.

Who are these miserable mentalists who think there are enough carbs in carrots and parsnips? What sad little lives they must lead.

On mumsnet usually eating two salad leaves a day and making a chicken last a year.

TheFormidableMrsC · 30/07/2023 16:46

Ha! I do a weekly roast dinner with everything but roast potatoes as my young son won't eat them and I can't be bothered to make for myself. We do have 3 or 4 veg, stuffing and yorkshires though. I'm so used to it now that I don't miss them!

Hummusanddipdip · 30/07/2023 16:47

I think dh would divorce me and ds would probably leave with him if I didn't include roasties and mash in a roast...

Veg:
Potato's (roast and mash)
Carrots (both sliced and mashed with suede)
Broccoli and cauliflower (cooked in a cheese sauce)
Peas and sweetcorn
Parsnips roasted
Cabbage and leek

Yorkshire puds

Meat of choice, but don't forget the sauces 🤣🤣🤣

And almost as important as the potatoes a good thick gravy!

Mumdiva99 · 30/07/2023 16:49

HalloumiLuvver · 30/07/2023 15:36

In fact my Boxing Day seconds has often just been a plate of roasties and gravy.

Left over roasties are a myth. I have never seen one, never eaten one, and never reheated one......no matter how many potatoes we do, they all get eaten.

CornishGem1975 · 30/07/2023 16:51

Good lord, it's not a roast unless it has roast potatoes AND mashed potatoes. It's one of the things I hate about eating a roast out in a restaurant or at a friends house, never any mash and quite often a new potato on my plate. I want none of that!

JudgeRudy · 30/07/2023 16:55

RedLem0nade · 30/07/2023 15:17

A roast dinner is really just a vehicle for potatoes, butter and gravy IMHO. YANBU.

Butter? That's a new one on me. Where does the butter go?

Awumminnscotland · 30/07/2023 17:01

Ha! My roast chicken is in the oven. I've covered it in cumin paprika garlic and lemon and having it with jasmine rice and roasted carrots and broccoli and maybe flat breads..

Createausername1970 · 30/07/2023 17:02

We cut back on carbs last year and lost a lot of weight on the Fast 800. Roast potatoes were a casualty of that and were sorely missed.

Now we have them occasionally and thoroughly enjoy them, but we don't have them with every roast dinner. I don't substitute with beetroot though. The veg tends to be leafy greens and broccoli rather than carrots and parsnips.

Createausername1970 · 30/07/2023 17:03

But if I was inviting anyone over, there would definitely be roast potatoes.

toomuchlaundry · 30/07/2023 17:03

@Awumminnscotland that is a mixture of cuisines

CrystalPalaceAlice · 30/07/2023 17:07

Theoldwoman · 30/07/2023 15:25

We don’t always have potatoes with a roast. Actually tonight was one of those nights.

We did have roast beetroot, pumpkin, carrots and steamed broccoli, cauliflower and beans.

Is this some sort of sick joke?

DrFoxtrot · 30/07/2023 17:16

I don't like potato. Is every roast dinner I've ever had not a real roast? 🤔

gogomoto · 30/07/2023 17:22

Roast potatoes are essential for a roast in a restaurant or serving to guests, what you choose to cook for just yourself is different, I often cook roast sweet potatoes, parsnips, beetroot and carrots rather than normal potatoes but for guests I always do a tray of normal roasties too

Tilllly · 30/07/2023 17:27

GoodChat · 30/07/2023 15:17

It's just meat and veg with no potatoes. There should be at least two forms of potato on any roast.

Anyone who serves a 'roast' with no potatoes should be added to some kind of watch list.

Or incarcerated

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 30/07/2023 15:18

My friend substituted roast potatoes for BROWN RICE on a roast dinner she served once as a “much healthier option”

I was saddened, shocked and appalled 🤯

Surely you mean EX friend
