To think it's not a Roast Dinner if there are no potatoes of any form!

Prompted by a comment I've just seen about a roast dinner being just meat and veg as there are already enough carbs in the carrots and parsnips 😫

I would have a mini breakdown if I was served that. When will this madness end?

We don’t always have potatoes with a roast. Actually tonight was one of those nights.

We did have roast beetroot, pumpkin, carrots and steamed broccoli, cauliflower and beans.

But why??

I will occasionally have roast cauliflower instead of potatoes (when I'm trying to lose weight - because if I have to choose between yorkshire puddings and potatoes, the yorkies will win) but I wouldn't dream of imposing that nonsense onto other people.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 30/07/2023 15:30

We are infact now ex-friends. I’m not saying the roast rice was to blame. But it probably was.

I remember once ending up with mash, roasties and dauphinoise at Christmas over year after some confusion as to who was doing what.

Best Christmas ever.

I hope you insisted on this for all future Christmases as well 😃

NobodyWantsToHearThat · 30/07/2023 15:33

Crispy, home-made roast potatoes are the best thing on a roast dinner!

HalloumiLuvver · 30/07/2023 15:36

In fact my Boxing Day seconds has often just been a plate of roasties and gravy.

mrsbyers · 30/07/2023 15:37

Deffo a need for potatoes but not two types imvho

Roast beetroot and pumpkin? Are you ok?

Razberryberet · 30/07/2023 15:55

Nope, this is unacceptable no mash?? No roasties?? This is not a roast!! I'd certainly go NC with anyone who thought this was ok. To those who say sod the parsnips this is unacceptable too!! I almost cried yesterday when their was no parsnips in Aldi I have to have them!! Plus stuffing 😁

3luckystars · 30/07/2023 15:56

Definitely need potatoes in some shape or form or it’s not on.

I bet you had BROWN RICE but were (quite correctly) too ashamed to admit this !

3luckystars · 30/07/2023 15:58

Brown rice!

Brown rice.

Brown rice instead of roast potatoes. What sad, empty little existences some people have to suffer through.

Jemimapinotduck · 30/07/2023 16:03

My ghast is truly flabbered by the idea of a roast dinner without potatoes, how is it even a roast dinner without them, surely it's just a dinner???? 🤯🤯🤯 However, I'm in a small minority that believes mash has absolutely no place on a roast dinner. I love mash and gravy but just not with my Sunday dinner.

tt9 · 30/07/2023 16:03

roast dinner needs to not just contain potatoes "in any form" - it has to be ROAST potatoes... preferably in duck fat.

its not about "there r already carbs". this is a moot point. roast dinner = roast potatoes. I don't mind if I don't get any meat. but stand between me and potatoes and it will not go down well.

what is the world coming to

tt9 · 30/07/2023 16:06

to those mentioning brown rice. nothing wrong with brown rice - the really nice short grain stuff. but it has no place in a roast dinner except maybe as stuffing. and it is certainly no replacement for potatoes.

Pluffe · 30/07/2023 16:06

They are the best part! Along with the gravy.

midlifecrash · 30/07/2023 16:07

Who eats parsnips ever in July?

PuppyMonkey · 30/07/2023 16:08

If it was a zombie apocalypse or something I’d just about accept no mash but no roast potatoes is literally inconceivable.

daisychaindays · 30/07/2023 16:08

Roast parsnips are absolutely amazing and one of the best bits of a roast along with roast potatoes, gravy and stuffing

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/07/2023 16:11

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 30/07/2023 15:18

My friend substituted roast potatoes for BROWN RICE on a roast dinner she served once as a “much healthier option”

I was saddened, shocked and appalled 🤯

DP tried that with white rice - and also added roasted peppers, onion, garlic and sweetcorn cobs to the steamed swede and cabbage, pouring abominably thin gravy over the top.

He only tried it the once, mind.

A roasted chicken with spices and tomato, peppers, corn and rice is lovely. However, once gravy, swede and cabbage come into play, none of these things are welcome.

YarisKaris · 30/07/2023 16:11

Yanbu! if there's no roasties it is not a roast dinner. I feel the same about yorkies Grin

CatsOnTheChair · 30/07/2023 16:16

Forgive me MN, for I have sinned.
If DH isn't about, instead of roast potatoes, the kids and I sometimes have roast with veg, stuffing and 4 (home-made) yorkshires each.
