Car insurance

Posting here for traffic.
I have just had my renewal quote and it has almost doubled!
I have not made a claim. It is the same car. Our circumstances are exactly the same. I’m low risk etc. Been driving for years. Don’t do lots of miles.
Obviously I’m prepared to shop around but I’m wondering if anyone has come across good value insurance companies.
Can anyone recommend a company?
I just feel like everyone is being ripped off left right and centre.
Thanks for reading.

Quotes have increased in price due to the enormous cost of claims in the last few years.
Price comparison sites normally have 10-25% built in.

Just use a comparison site. I get free car washes through confused , or use Quidco/top cashback and get £30/£40 back. Compare the market if you want bogof cinema tickets and cheap cafe Nero.
I rarely renew with the same insurer

Your best bet would be to check a couple of comparison sites - you will almost certainly get a cheaper quote.

(Discount, that is)

My renewal with More Than doubled, I then got comparison quotes and they were anywhere between £600-£1300 and that was with 9 years no claims, why just a big discrepancy I'll never know! Got mine with Liverpool Victoria in the end.

The cost of repairs, prices of used cars etc has driven insurance costs up massively. My car was written-off earlier this year and my insurers said they are writing off more and more cars because it's just not cost-efficient to fix them any more.

But also your postcode plays a big part so if others in your postcode have claimed that also pushes your premium up. (Sorry to my neighbours)

Thanks for the replies.
Yes I will shop around, I always do. I don’t think they can justify the hike I think it’s called jumping on the bandwagon.
It would be nice just to renew but that won’t be happening.

‘While consumers, struggling with higher food and energy costs, fear they are being milked to boost insurers’ profits, experts counter that they aren’t making any. They say car insurance has slim profit margins, and that many firms were caught out during 2022 by the steep rise in claims costs and are making up ground with higher premiums.’

UK drivers shocked as car insurance costs soar by up to 90%

The price of petrol and diesel may have dropped but households are being hit by another rising cost

It's possible the underwriting criteria for the insurer has changed and that's hiked up the price. You'll have a better idea once you get some price comparisons.

I thought of this thread today as I had my renewal quote. I have a little car and last year the premium was £230. This year they wanted £485!

I phoned and they knocked about £100 off.

Daffodilwoman · 29/08/2023 08:14

Hi everyone
I did get sorted. Went through one of those websites which search for you. Got a good deal. About £10 more than last year so pleased with that. Had to ring my old insurer to cancel the automatic renewal. The staff member said he would try and reduce my previous quote I told him not to bother as I doubt he could Knock over £200 off!
