Ddog put to sleep today

Our family dog had to be put to sleep this evening 😢

Everything happened so quickly, yesterday he was ok then he suddenly last night he started to act really odd, panting, extremely thirsty and pacing the house really quickly. He kept trying to hide in places and was really stressed out.

The vet said it was neurological, maybe a stroke or a seizure he suffered and that things weren't going to improve. He also had a burst gland in his neck so must have been in a lot of pain & discomfort.

We had no choice but to put him to sleep. This feeling is the worst, the sense of loss and knowing that we will not see him again. Will it ever get better? 💔

PS, there’s a very poignant Pam Ayres poem about losing a dog.
It’s called Tippy Tappy Feet - all too liable to have you groping for the tissues. 😥

I’ve gone through a lot of trauma with a pet these last few weeks. Totally understand your emotions 💐 When I was in the vets they have a helpline for people dealing with pet grief.

Huge sympathies, 💐 I do know how horrible it is.
I know it’s no consolation now that you didn’t make him suffer any longer, but it may help a bit in future.

I just hope no ghastly non-doggy person says, ‘Oh, well, you can always get another,’ as if you’d just had the TV nicked or something. I had that, after losing the dog we’d had for 14 years. 😰

Someone said that to me and it made me so cross.

We don't deserve dogs only someone who has owned one would understand this and I'm a new dog owner

OP I am so sorry for your loss. You did the kindest thing. It does get better but I needed grief counselling.

Blondewithredlips · 31/07/2023 02:14

Forgot to add Rudyard Kipling poem The Power of Dog sums up the grief perfectly.

All seems so cruel and sudden. I wish dogs could live forever.

I'm so sorry xx

Its devastating and SO difficult to deal with, you don't get the understand & support you do if it's a human, but it hurts SO much.

it gets 'less raw' rather than better.

you know you did the right thing for him xx

💐

Sending a hugs OP. It’s so terribly sad and all so sudden. I truly believe they don’t suffer when they are put to sleep. If he suffered neurological damage that would so much more distressing for him. You did him the final kindness even though that is so hard to bear. I was with my cat last week as it was her time. I’ll miss her forever - last thing she heard was that I loved her.
