...to hate Miele?

I am attempting to call out an engineer under the extended warranty scheme. This is the fifth or sixth time the wretched thing has broken down in the last three or four years.

First I called John Lewis for the reference, and they put me through to Miele. After 20 mins, the phone went dead. Rang back, and after a further 20 mins got through to a call handler who needed to check my policy number, she said.Ten minutes later, the phone went dead again.

So frustrating. My Miele vacuum also broke down after 18 months.I am careful with my stuff and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

I buy the best quality I can afford but it won't be Miele next time. They have an out of date pandemic related message on their holding thing as well. Seriously unimpressed.

Is Bosch any better? My old faithful washing machine will also need replacing soon...

I had a mile dishwasher that broke down after 2years. Just out of warranty. Was so disappointed. During the pandemic and didn't want to be without so replaced it with Smeg. This had a 5 year warranty. Also broke down just after 1 year but the customer care was excellent and they sent an engineer to replace the part really quickly .

Kazzyhoward · 28/07/2023 19:45

Sounds like their customer service staff are wfh hence all the lost connections. Most firms are like that now. Customer service standards have fallen off a cliff. You can't be sure any other manufacturer would be any better.

Mum198000 · 28/07/2023 19:45

I had a Miele dishwasher that died after 4 years and I complained and they sent a brand new one for free. I was happy with that.

MrsR87 · 28/07/2023 19:53

I guess as with any brand, on a thread like this most replies are going to slam the brand as most people who will click on the thread will have a pre-existing dislike of the brand due to a bad experience.

I can only say that we’ve only ever had good experiences with our appliances (bough pre and lost pandemic). Over the years we’ve accumulated a washer, a dryer, oven, fridge, coffee machine and vacuum cleaner. We had an issue with the oven which was fixed under warranty and an issue with the washer but that was also fixed under warranty and also resulted in us getting a vast amount of their washing detergent for free (pretty much a years worth which I was pretty pleased with!) I can see how anything out of warranty would be expensive though! In terms of performance though, they are all better than previous brands we’ve had and I would buy again.

Bluebellbike · 28/07/2023 19:57

I have had a Bosch washing machine for 8 years. Still like new and performs wonderfully.

I love my Miele pet vacuum - best I've ever had.

Although you cannot beat Dyson customer care. They constantly gave me free replacements for my old vacuum cleaner broken parts even though it was well out of warranty (20 years old by the time I got rid). And just lovely people on the phone.

Don't think they do dishwashers tho.

I second the Dyson brand and excellent aftercare. I'm pretty heavy handed with vacuum cleaners and the Dysons all withstand me!

MaryBeardsShoes · 29/07/2023 07:49

We have a Miele washing machine and a tumble drier. We buy from a Miele outlet centre. The products are great and the service has been fantastic in our experience. Shame it’s been different for you though!

MissDollyMix · 28/07/2023 17:38

Oh this is disappointing/ I’m planning on getting a Miele vacuum soon.
Not a big fan of Bosch since our Bosch dishwasher only lasted 18 months. Repair guy said it was a common fault with Bosch’s and the quality has gone massively down hill since they stopped building in Europe.

I adore our Miele vacuum. We'd always used Dyson til we got a Miele around 3 or 4 years ago. It is miles better than a Henry or a Dyson and still going strong.

That’s good to hear!

TooOldForThisNonsense · 29/07/2023 10:08

I had a Bosch dishwasher and it was rubbish. The first one only lasted a year just inside the warranty thankfully and the replacement only about 3 years. Just got a Beko last time which is so far excellent. I was thinking of a Miele washing machine next time as we were in a holiday let that had an old one which was brilliant but maybe not

Well, customer service redeemed themselves somewhat. Got through pretty quickly to a helpful person and repair guy coming on Tuesday.

Dishwasher bought in 2020. This will be the sixth repair. I won't count the first issue which was caused by faulty installation by John Lewis.

I am a single person household and use it entirely according to the instructions, even down to cleaning every six months with their extremely expensive cleaner canister.

I would be asking for a new machine. 6 repairs is not on.

GCAcademic · 29/07/2023 13:00

We bought a Bosch washing machine a couple of years ago. It broke down (bearings) within the first ten months and we had to have the engineer out. It took them four weeks to fit us in for that appointment. Then the engineer left a tool in the machine and we didn't dare to use it as it was making a horrendous noise when it spun, and we had to wait another four weeks for them to come out again.

I'm actually moving house in the next few months and am leaving it behind for free. Can't be bothered with the faff of arranging a replacement now tbh... It does need to be in working order of course, hence the call-out...

If anyone is interested in an update to this ineffably boring thread, here you are.

I can only assume I have done something to mortally offend the God of All the White Goods. Maybe I should perform some act of supplication- wash my pots and pans in the local river, maybe?

Miele engineer arrived today ( not at the time customer services told me, around which I reorganised my whole day, but never mind). Somewhat patronising in manner. Cleared fault. Tried to flog me some more of the expensive cleaner.

I loaded the dishwasher after he had left, and Lo! The same fault has recurred. Engineer visit not available for another ten days.

Meanwhile a lovely, helpful local repair guy came yesterday to fix my ancient Zanussi washing machine, so that at least is working.

He doesn't repair Miele apparently, which is just as well as I sure am not buying from them again.

Oh regarding washing machine recommendations repair guy said avoid Bosch, and that AEG are good. Also another brand I hadn't heard of- Heia I think?

IMustDoMoreExercise · 01/08/2023 14:44

That's awful.

I think you must have a dud machine. With hindsight, it would have been better to ask for a refund or replacement once it went wrong for a second or third time.

GammonAndEggs · 01/08/2023 16:28

I’m a fan!
I have a hoover, washing machine, tumble drier, fridge x2, freezer, oven x2 microwave, steamer and hob.
oh and a very over priced coffee machine!

JinglingSpringbells · 01/08/2023 16:38

Nothing but praise for Miele.

Dishwasher going strong after 20 years, 1st washing machine lasted 19 years, 2nd one we have now is okay although there was a small issue (blocked pipe- nothing to do with the machine itself) but they sent a lovely man to fix it and he gave us number for any future issues.

My Zanussi washer/dryer finally gave up after 17 years, so I bought the "best" - a Miele Washing machine. Cost over £700 more than 10 years ago. I had the 10 year warranty. Within a few months we began to get small holes in our clothes. I spoke to Miele and found their customer service to be so so rude - lots of time to get through, quite a lot of threats that if it was my fault then I would be changed for the engineer visit etc. The engineer came out - nothing wrong but the small holes continued. (No pets at this time). So in the end Miele decided to replace the drum - they felt there must be a small metal bit catching the clothes. 2 person job nearly 4 hours. When the drum came out I was fascinated - absolutely filthy after just 18 months of fairly light use. I started to take a picture and was told that i couldnt. In my own home. My washing machine. I felt very threatened. After that experience as I had other appliances replaced I talked to the engineers - they all loved Miele. Just before the 10 year warranty expired I needed to have a seal replaced - I was dreading the call. Efficient, engineer came, no issue. But I would still never have miele again. Now Dishwashers - 25 years - 2 DW - both Bosch. Again fairly light use.

OhwhyOY · 01/08/2023 20:00

This is depressing, I have a defective Samsung fridge freezer which has failed 9 months after they gave it to me to replace a previous defective fridge freezer 🙄I was thinking about a Miele replacement. Perhaps not....

sansou · 01/08/2023 21:10

My 12 yr Miele washing machine had an error code a few weeks ago. A service engineer came within 3 days and for an agreed fixed price, it was fixed with new parts and hopefully good to go for at least another decade. Allegedly good for 20 yrs but I'll settle for 10. Happy with their customer service.

Also have a 10 yr Miele Cat & Dog vaccum cleaner still going strong with zero issues. Prior to that, I had a Dyson followed by a Henry both of which gave up the ghost within 5 yrs.

Words · 02/08/2023 06:21

If it's even possible to draw conclusions from this self selecting sample it seems to me that the time to buy Bosch and Miele was maybe ten years ago.

I am so grateful I paid an extra 150 for an extended warranty on the dishwasher. I have not been impressed either with Miele's customer service or their repair guys. And I have had many chances to experience both!

The latter tried to insinuate the various issues were my fault, despite me following the instructions to the letter. I've never experienced any of these issues with any other brand.

They also gave contradictory advice on how to stop it happening again. For example the last chap told me to wash everything at 70 degrees. Which I have dutifully done. The latest one says this is bad advice. He said that different engineers would have different opinions Confused

Anyway, there we are! I won't be sorry to wave goodbye to their product when I move.

Never had a Miele, have a AEG washer which is marvellous, and a Shark vacuum. Shark motor broke down about 6months in, took it back, had it replaced . Just outside the 5year warranty, motor on second one went. Contacted Shark through the Resolver website, they sent a new motor, which I fitted myself, and a new 5 year Warranty. Have had excellent responses using Resolver, from Stagecoach and Lidl issues too. Might not help now, but may for the future.
