...to hate Miele?

I am attempting to call out an engineer under the extended warranty scheme. This is the fifth or sixth time the wretched thing has broken down in the last three or four years.

First I called John Lewis for the reference, and they put me through to Miele. After 20 mins, the phone went dead. Rang back, and after a further 20 mins got through to a call handler who needed to check my policy number, she said.Ten minutes later, the phone went dead again.

So frustrating. My Miele vacuum also broke down after 18 months.I am careful with my stuff and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.

I buy the best quality I can afford but it won't be Miele next time. They have an out of date pandemic related message on their holding thing as well. Seriously unimpressed.

Is Bosch any better? My old faithful washing machine will also need replacing soon...

love my miele hoover. I have not found one that has good suction like a miele. don't get me started in Henry. I get about 5 to 6 years out of mine and it's used every single day ( I also shush use it yo clear out the last bits of the stove in winter ) mother in law has miele dishwasher and washing machine for 20 years now won't buy anything else. same with all her sisters and daughter. I unfortunately couldn't afford the washing machine the time my only 3 year old whirlpool actual blew up so bought a bisch on sale and am very impressed so far. seriously looking at them for my kitchen when house is built

Oh I realise obviously it's anecdata. But helpful nevertheless. And cathartic, more importantly.

I am a Miele fan! Had nothing but excellent customer service when an external issued caused my dishwasher to stop working. Got through on the phone quickly, they called back when they said they would, engineer arrived on time, was polite, friendly and actually tidied up to a high standard. I remain a fan.

Words · 28/07/2023 18:08

How recently was that @SleepingisanArt ? My experience this afternoon was appalling. I will try again tomorrow...

My parents bought AEG items (fridge, freezer and dishwasher in the 1980s). The fridge and freezer are still going.

When it was not possible to repair the dishwasher they replaced it with a Miele. They thought paying over the odds would give them a similar level of longevity and reliability. Unfortunately things seem to have changed and they started having problems after just a couple of years. Can't really comment on the quality of the call centre, but the engineering is definitely below 1980s West German quality.

WithIcePlease · 28/07/2023 18:13

My Miele dryer is well over 15 years old.

The Miele engineer (out for dishwasher) said not to bother with a Miele washer. He said that basically all machines wash fine and wasn't worth the £££

Bosch washing machine 13 years old here. It looks like new - not even fading or yellowing on the fascia

WithIcePlease · 28/07/2023 18:17

Also I replaced my drinks fridge recently. I was recommended a Liebherr to replace the Miele as the company thought they were a better build quality now (and actually a less expensive product by £100 or so)

JulesJules · 28/07/2023 18:18

I love my Miele cat &dog vacuum and washing machine and tumble drier. In my previous house I had a combi washer/drier (due to space issues, wouldn't have a combi again)which lasted about 15years. Oh and a miele oven/combi grill microwave which is brilliant.

Having said that though, we had a small repair to the tumble drier and the engineer was saying that he reckons newer machines aren't as good quality.

faw2009 · 28/07/2023 18:23

The other problem with anecdotes is that a Miele may have been the business 10 years ago, but could have gone downhill since.

Having said that, my washing machine is samsung. It had a 5 year warranty which I did have to call on (but was actually my fault!) I think I booked the repair on line though did have to wait a few weeks for the actual repairman. But maybe that's normal? Anyhow he was great but did say all washing machines these days probably have a lifespan of 5years.

MonumentalLentil · 28/07/2023 18:36

I am now on Bosch washing machine no. 4. One of them didn't last but the others were OK.

Originally bought a Samsung but the damn thing kept moveg across the floor. Had engineers back multiple times, the final one was when they took it away and replaced it with the Bosch. Knwn problem with the Samsung as I discovered after reading more reviews mentioning the problem which didn't show up when I was researching. Would never buy Samsung again, you need a certain type of floor apparently...

Bosch dishwasher not so good, and replaced with a Siemens which absolute crap at twice the price of the Bosch. My neighbour has the Beko one that I wanted which was out of stock, only option turned out to be Siemens. Never again will I buy Siemens anything.

I tend to go for mid range but for a DW I don't care if I could just get one that washes properly, actually dries as well and doesn't have racks that nothing fits like Siemens.

MonumentalLentil · 28/07/2023 18:37

BTW, I do know that Bosch and Siemens have merged. Not sure if the washing machines labelled Bosch are still OK.

MissDollyMix · 28/07/2023 18:38

After our Bosch dishwasher died our repairman recommended a Gorenje - it’s a Slovakian manufacturer. We’ve had it for about 4 years now (so considerably longer than the Bosch it replaced!) and it seems very solid and well built.

BodegaSushi · 28/07/2023 18:39

I won't hear a negative word spoken about the Miele bag Hoover. To be fair I can't speak on other products. I've used a range of supposedly great brands through my work and Nothing Compares (sorry)

whirlyhead · 28/07/2023 18:47

My Miele vacuum had a catastrophic meltdown at 18 months old. My Miele fridge broke twice in one month (7 years old) and after paying £800 to fix it in total it broke down again a month later and got kicked out the door. I bought a Siemens fridge that is still trucking along nicely.

my Miele washing machine did last 19 years with no issues but my appliance man briskly stated that mieles aren’t as good as they used to be and not to bother buying them anymore.

The problem with threads like this is you're only ever going to get a series of anecdotes from a pre-selected group, it's not exactly a JDPower survey.
Here are mine. We have an industrial Miele dishwasher at work, used weekly at 95°C for the past 35 years and it's still going strong and no repairs in that time. We have a 15 year old AEG dishwasher, never missed a beat. 12 year old Miele vacuum cleaner, also great. John Lewis washer dryer, 11 years before the bearings got too noisy
Make of that what you will.

I think that their quality has gone down recently, so the fact that your old appliances work does not mean anything.

MrsClatterbuck · 28/07/2023 18:50

When we moved house I reluctantly left behind my Siemens dishwasher of nearly nineteen years. We took our AEG washing machine as it was still working well and still going strong and nearly 14 years old instead of the washer dryer offered as part of the PC sum.

We went with Candy appliances but wish I had gone for higher priced ones. Wasn't because we couldn't afford them so not really sure of what I was thinking when I ordered them. Left behind a lovely stoves oven and my Zanussi ceramic hob which I Ioved especially after two solid hobs which were such a pain to clean.
But reading these I wonder maybe if we did the right thing. Everything still working but the fridge part of the fridge freezer is playing up. So will have to do.my research if any have to be replaced

Borborygmus · 28/07/2023 18:52

The bag full indicator on our Miele vacuum cleaner broke fairly soon after purchase, other than that it's fine (though nothing special). Our previous Bosch vacuum cleaner was pretty good. Our Bosch washing machine and oven are both crap.

quicklybeendrivenmad · 28/07/2023 18:55

Bosch american fridge freezer stopped making ice called bosch friday repair was done wednesday and tbf was probably our fault as builders had turned water off so ice bucket did not drop just froze but no charge

AnnaNims · 28/07/2023 18:58

We have Miele vacuum cleaners, washing machine and dryer. I love them and think they’re vastly superior to other brands.

Hopper123 · 28/07/2023 19:02

I'm really surprised about the product and the customer service. We have a miele vacuum cleaner and Miele dryer and both have been good. We had one issue during the first week of having dryer and a guy came out pretty much straight away and it was due to something not being programmed in properly at the factory once that was sorted it's been great with no problems for last 5 years. Our hoover is the second one we've had in about 10 years but that's only because our first one got damaged in a move. I think that even with the best brands we may always end up with the one that's come out of the factory a bit of a dud. I would say Bosch are good but I would avoid Vax and shark like the plague when it comes to vacuumed cleaners. I also was really impressed with our 'white knight' dryer we had in our first home together. We only got rid of it as we moved into a new rental and we needed a condenser as there was nowhere for a vent one to go. White Knight are cheap but we found it really good quality.

ShoesoftheWorld · 28/07/2023 19:02

We bought a Bosch washing machine and a Miele dishwasher five years ago. The former has been fine despite heavy use, the latter a bit of a disappointment - we had good customer service when we had to call the repair man out (was our fault) but the peformance has never been amazing.

mrsfollowill · 28/07/2023 19:05

I'm disappointed to read all the Miele hate! My fridge is over 25yrs old and still going strong- I was going to replace it with the same when it is needed but will read some recent reviews when/if it happens. Got a Bosch washer that has done over 10 yrs no bother- was their lowest priced one at the time.
I've probably cursed myself by saying that out loud Grin- watch them break down now.

ohtowinthelottery · 28/07/2023 19:32

I couldn't justify buying Miele to myself so bought Siemens washing machine and dishwasher which I was told was the next best thing. Don't think I've had an engineer out to the washing machine - which is now out of 5 year warranty (hope I haven't jinxed it now), but had a few issues with the dishwasher (8 years old) but the guy who fixed it (local engineer) says it's a good make as you can actually get at and replace parts - cheaper brand would have needed scrapping by now.
Siemens do seem to outsource service/repairs to local firms - our nearest one is 25 miles away and I have used them for a previous Bosch appliance without problem.

newfloorplease · 28/07/2023 19:33

I like my Miele Cat and Dog vacuum cleaner- it's lasted years.
I've just bought a Miele washing machine to replace my 21 year old Bosch one which was on its last legs. It served us well.

ChristmasFluff · 28/07/2023 19:40

I love my Miele pet vacuum - best I've ever had.

Although you cannot beat Dyson customer care. They constantly gave me free replacements for my old vacuum cleaner broken parts even though it was well out of warranty (20 years old by the time I got rid). And just lovely people on the phone.

Don't think they do dishwashers tho.
