ULEZ

Simple solution to all the people moaning about the ULEZ charge. In order to be exempt all you have to do is drive your car into a shipping container, close the doors and run your engine for one hour. If as you say your car isn't that bad you should be fine, as the fumes you pump out on pedestrians should be good enough for you to breathe for an hour?
AIBU- Don't be ridiculous that would kill off loads of drivers who only have access to the most integrated transport system in the country.
YANBU - Sounds like a plan! 😂

@Doris86 I clearly said it would mean a massive trade up.
Why would I scrap a perfectly good car, well maintained and with a perfect service history for an unknown old banger?

Just to humour you, I've looked at the value of equivalent mileage / spec / age petrol versions and they are 2 or 3 times the price of diesels.

If it’s a trade up then it’s not a like for like replacement. Obviously a trade up will cost more.

You've obviously not looked at the price of second hand ULEZ compliant petrol cars recently! They are SHOCKING! We looked at a 6 year old Ford Grand C-Max, and it was £19k!!!!!!!!! for a 6 year old car!

Getting a tiny car just isn't practical for many people.

Like I said there is a ULEZ car for any budget. If your budget is lower you will need to get an older one.

An older one isn't likely to be ULEZ compliant. To get a like for like, but ULEZ compliant will currently cost A LOT more than a non ULEZ compliant version.

greengreengrass25 · 29/08/2023 17:40

Some of the newer cars have problems such as Fords with belts that break and cause problems with engines

Doris86 · 29/08/2023 17:43

Common misconception that you need to get a newer car to be ULEZ compliant. Virtually all petrol cars made since 2006 are ULEZ compliant. So unless you are getting something older than 18 years it’s not an issue

I've just spent the last 3 months searching for a suitable, ULEZ compliant car to replace our 10 year old diesel MPV. I know what is available and what the prices are very intimately!

I’m not saying you don’t. But you said older cars wouldn’t be ULEZ compliant, and I was responding to say that’s not true.

DreamItDoIt · 29/08/2023 18:50

This is just the start, the aim is to stop people driving . Next is pay per mile in cities then that will get rolled out until it's everywhere. Eventually the government will know where you are, how far you've driven etc and charge you.

Whilst ulezit will lower pollution it will be used as another tax one that will just keep giving. The actual stats always showing that it has/is working. Meanwhile battery development is not progressing fast enough. I'm left wondering where all the perfectly good cars are being dumped and where all the useless batteries will be dumped. Probably in the same place as the disposable vapes that are doing (I accept yet to be proven, but I think we all know) as much, if not more damage to young peoples lungs than ciggies.

Meanwhile the rich will keep driving and polluting. As long as you can afford it you can drive and fly to your hearts content. Rich peoples fumes are a different type of fume after all.

MadamPia · 29/08/2023 18:51

I think it’s fair. I live in London, the air is awful!!! I’ve spent the summer anywhere but London because the air quality just smells better and summer is less muggy.

My car is exempt from ULEZ and many cars are. You really don’t need a big powerful car (in my opinion) in the city but apparently peoples lifestyle are at stake - nobody ever wants to save the children (or the people).

DdraigGoch · 29/08/2023 18:52

SoupDragon · 28/07/2023 14:53

Even a ULEZ compliant car would kill you.

Are you suggesting that the rules might need to be even stricter?

justteanbiscuits · 29/08/2023 19:36

I think a pay per mile replacement for road tax isn't a stupid idea. But as a replacement, not on top of

Wsmi · 29/08/2023 19:54

Huh? What a weird thread. OP seems a bit out of it. Posters on here get more and more bat shit by the day.

Sonyrec · 29/08/2023 22:07

If you pay £500 for an old Fiesta then you need to either be prepared for increasing garage bills or have a mechanic in the family. 😂

My Mum has had her £500 Fiesta since new. It’s done 140k miles, never let her down and flies through every MOT.

In any case I just used that example to show that however much you’ve got to spend, you can easily get a ULEZ compliant car. You don’t need to spend thousands on a virtually new car to comply with ULEZ, as many people seem to assume.

CheersToMe · 29/08/2023 22:54
Confused Ah, so you recognise that a reliable car with provenance and documented service history is a valuable asset not to be given up lightly. How lucky for your mum that hers is petrol.

Indeed. As I said in my first post I don’t agree with the ULEZ. I’m just making the point that if people do have to replace their cars, it doesn’t have to mean spending thousands on an almost new car.

Theunamedcat · 29/08/2023 23:48

Even when they first came out they were more than £500 wtf have I just misread?

jannier · 30/08/2023 00:08

Doris86 · 29/08/2023 13:53

No it’s not, which is why I said there is a ULEZ compliant car for every budget. If you sold your X Trail, you’d have a much bigger budget than £500 and would be able to get something more comparable to it.

I was offered £300 for my galaxy my husband needs to replace a glass sided van with a 0 budget what do you suggest as replacement is £24 k

jannier · 30/08/2023 00:15

Doris86 · 29/08/2023 16:29

If the residual value is practically nil, how is getting a like for like car going to cost £10k?

Surely you can buy an equivalent petrol
version of the same spec and age for around the same value of your current cars?

The price of compliant second hand cars has escalated and in the last 3 months become ridiculous and then weed out the crap why don't people get that?

jannier · 30/08/2023 00:16

Doris86 · 29/08/2023 17:28

If it’s a trade up then it’s not a like for like replacement. Obviously a trade up will cost more.

Trade up in value not spec isn't that obvious

Doris86 · 30/08/2023 07:08

jannier · 30/08/2023 00:16

Trade up in value not spec isn't that obvious

But this isn’t about trading up is it. It’s about swapping a non ULEZ compliant car for an equivilant age\value ULEZ compliant car.

If someone wants to go from a 10 year old car to a 2 year old car at the same time then obviously it costs a lot more. But that misses the point I was making.

Doris86 · 30/08/2023 07:09

Theunamedcat · 29/08/2023 23:48

I was talking about second hand values of 16 year old ones, not the brand new price.

CheersToMe · 30/08/2023 07:17

You are missing the point, I think.
If I own a very good albeit old car with a spec that meets my needs, that I have meticulously maintained and has plenty of miles left in it ....why would I sell/scrap it to buy a similar randomly chosen petrol car that will probably turn out to be a complete lemon? That's a fool's errand.

No you are missing the point. I don’t agree with the ULEZ and don’t think you should change your car.

I’m just making the point that if people are forced to change cars, there are ULEZ compliant cars cheaper than some people think.

Doris86 · 30/08/2023 08:23

One way or another this ULEZ expansion is doomed though. The unrest and mass vandalism of the cameras that is occurring might cause Kahn to see sense. Otherwise the Conservative candidate for mayor will be voted in by a massive landslide next year, and she has promised to abandon this expansion on day 1 she is in the role.
