Ongoing petechiae-very worried

Hi All,

I am just wondering what would you do .

Long story so bear with me.

2 month ago I found a lump on my 7 years old girl neck and she was complaining of being more tired and had a leg pain mainly in the evening.

We went to our Gp who sent us for an ultrasound and blood test.

Ultrasound came back as reactive lymph node and blood test came back ok also.

A few days after her blood test I’ve realised that she has very few red spots on her body ( mainly neck and back area) but I found on her leg tummy etc .

They were not fading under the glass.

Next day we went to our Gp who said it is petechiae but as she has only a few and had a blood test not a long time ago she is not concerned as it can be from lots of things ( heat scratch etc)

She got few spots every day here and there and they were fading by next day or so but she kept getting new ones.

We asked the Gp again who said she is not concerned.

The spots stopped coming for 2 weeks and I was so relieved however this Monday when she had around 40 on her shoulders , no fever no sickness and keep getting few ones every day mainly on her back and neck .

Next day the same so we went to the Er.

The doctor looked at me with a very big open eyes saying that they are petechiae but this is not the kind of petechiae they are worried about.

However he ordered for blood which came back ok, however her haemoglobin was borderline.
( the blood test a month ago was in the morning that one was in the evening so they can cause the differences maybe )

I honestly do not know what to do at this point.

Should I push for specific blood tests? Should I go back to my Gp to refer us somewhere else?
Or should I be calm that her full blood count came back ok?

Did any of you were in similar situation? What was the outcome?

I am honestly very nervous.

Many thanks.

Did they do a wee dip?

MimiDuncan · 27/07/2023 18:44

What is that?

Bodybop · 27/07/2023 18:55

Test the urine. Dip it.

you've consulted a few clinicians now who are not worried. Obviously seek more advice if symptoms worsen/change/ you are not happy.

YarisKaris · 27/07/2023 18:55

I have these all the time

MimiDuncan · 27/07/2023 18:59

Yes at the ER they checked her urine and was clear

I am sorry but not sure if I understand…scurvy? May I ask you what does that mean?

If it’s scurvy, she needs vitamin C. Does she eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and veg? Does she have a daily vitamin supplement? Give her orange juice (not squash, real fresh juice) for a week or so, see if it improves.

MimiDuncan · 27/07/2023 19:25

She is a picky eater but gets multivitamin gummy every day

She had a lot over both legs, they came up quite suddenly and we’re certainly there a few days. She is chronically malnourished though due to other issues so if your Dd eats fruit and veg I’d hope it wouldn’t be the case…..unless she has an undiagnosed malabsorption issue such as coeliac disease.

Thank you . Did she get a blood test?

my daughter gets them mainly on her back and neck every day few new ones 😔

not eating that much fruit but trying to give her as much as I can .

she is taking multivitamins.

can celiac also cause this?

But fatigue, leg pain and swollen lymph nodes are all symptoms of scurvy so possibly ……does she eat any fruit and veg or is the gummie her only source of vitamin c?

She is eating few fruits but she would need to eat more.

did she get a blood test?

It could be low platelets. Did they mention if they tested these? If they did full blood count then they would most likely have.

If red and white blood count was normal then I wouldn’t panic at the moment. That’s a good sign.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 27/07/2023 19:33

They just diagnosed her on symptoms as the blood test is expensive I think. They did more routine bloods to rule out diabetes and leukaemia.

coeliac disease wouldnt cause it as such but if you have coeliac disease you don’t absorb vitamins/nutrients until you stop eating gluten.

with Dd all her symptoms plus the fact she doesn’t eat hardly anything, certainly no fruit or veg led them to the diagnosis. She’s an adult so her eating habits are way past my control.

HaveYouHeardOfARoadAtlas · 27/07/2023 19:34

I do understand you being worried, when I saw DD’s legs I thought she had leukaemia. But was reassured by the blood tests which showed her white cells, etc were normal.

Yes they checked her full blood count and they said it’s ok.

however the second time when she got a blood test at the Er in the evening her haemoglobin was borderline, and her white blood cell was a slightly bigger then the morning one and red a slightly smaller but still in a range .

As long as they were in normal range it’s fine. They might change slightly depending on time of day. Keep an eye on her. Any changes take her back to GP or A&E for another blood test.

Hopefully it’s fine and nothing to worry about. Please update us when you’ve seen the haematologist x
