What's going on with Banks?

dottypotter · 27/07/2023 18:21

Had to go into the bank today and went to the counter to wait my turn.

Was approached by a man with an I pad and when I told him what I wanted to do, he told me one of the staff who floats around with an ipad would have to do it. I couldn't do it at the counter.
Why wait till your in the queue to tell you?
Where are the signs telling you where you must wait for different things?

Anyway told me to take a seat and someone would come along but nobody did.

He took me out of a queue I was in, just to sit and wait for longer.

Eventually got seen and business done on I pad.
Have no switched bank accounts.
What is it now
with staff now with I pads?
Why aren't they behind the counter?

Shambles.

I cannot speak for any other retailer but to make an assumption based on statistics when you do not have recent first hand experience... You shouldn't.

Omg stop, I think my ears are bleeding reading such moronic statements.

People have had enough of experts - and statistics too it appears.

If we believe everything that we hear from 'experts' or that we read online...

…we wouldn’t have had to deal with brexit?
…we wouldn’t have …? I mean there’s all sorts of follow ups to that. No doubt you have some very interesting opinions.

Oh silly me, we’re all much better off listening to the random who works in a shop and thinks that gives her insight into the entire UK’s cash economy. Or maybe Stevie from down the pub could weigh in??

I'm just giving examples of why cash/banks are still needed for society and some people.
These 'experts' who think otherwise clearly haven't considered any of these points.

There's a town about 15 miles from me which will have no banks at all, from next month. The locals are up in arms about it and have fort to keep this one remaining bank open.

But it's all fallen on deaf ears.

The other day I had a cheque to pay into my account.
You can pay cheques on mobile phones, but because my nan's handwriting isn't very clear (she has arthritis) it rejected it online.

So I had to go to a branch to do it.

What would I have done if all the banks were closed?

I don't accept cheques anymore, but when I did I used to post them to the bank. Cheques are redundant now anyway.

User3826 · 28/07/2023 08:52

They've always had those floaters in banks, they pick up quick easy sales leads.

Damn the Bank of England and their experts. They don’t know nearly as much as one person who works in two shops.

This isn’t about the need for cash, it’s your insistence that 3/4 of transactions are still cash based on a sample of two.

No banks at all in my town now , just a post office with pathetic opening hours , 10 till 4 with half an hour for lunch Monday to Friday staffed by people with an attitude problem as well

I have to pay a cheque in once a year & they always try to get me to use the machine - but to use the machine I have to pay the cheque into one account, wait on it to show up (takes about 3-4 hours), clear then move it to the account I actually want the money to be in.

Now I just tell them I don't know the PIN number for the card so I can pay it in at the counter to the right account - which is true because I never withdraw cash from the account & other than the cheque never physically pay anything in because I do all my banking for that account online.

You can pay cheques in on line.

Except when the app can't read them.. or ...doesn't work or if they are over a certain amount ....
The barclays app is crap for paying cheques in

So pop it in the post then. Or pay into one of the ATM machines that accepts cheque deposits.

countrygirl99 · 28/07/2023 10:04

Or pay in at a Post Office (except Barclays customers if I remember correctly)

MamaDollyorJesus · 28/07/2023 10:47

@KimberleyClark I know but I pass the bank on my lunch hour so it's not really a hassle to pop in with it.

Also what are all these people going to do when their jobs are fully automated - it's getting ridiculous.

My bank doesn’t let you, but the last time I needed to pay in a cheque I posted it.

If you still think BofE are credible experts after 15 years of mismanagement of monetary policy, you don’t under set and economics and should stop embarrassing yourself.

What have people done since the dawn of time as industries have automated?

Yes online is great until you are locked out of your account and no one is answering the phone at your bank.

Are you locked out because you forgot your password?

who do you bank with?

Wolfpa · 28/07/2023 11:37

When people get taken out of queues it normally means that they have ignored the person working near the door directing them where to go. Was this you?

I’ve only done it once and it was a typewritten cheque so the app could probably cope better with that!

Windercar · 28/07/2023 11:53

hands down the most moronic - yet funniest - statement I’ve read on here in a while. I feel like I should print it off and hang it in all the University toilets.

Well ok then. How about all the other groups and their statistics then? Either way I’m sure the BofE has a better grasp on the way that money is being spent in this country that one person and the shop she works in.

I bank with Nat West and no I’m not Nigel Farage.
I made one attempt to login, so even if I incorrectly entered my password I would expect to have two more attempts before my account was locked.
It took my several phone calls to Nat West to get through and then I got a rude condescending woman on the line. I asked her boss to ring me back but no joy yet, eight days later.
Next day I was locked out again after one attempt. Tried contacting staff over Twitter as outside of office hours, but they cannot do anything.
So yes what happens when you are in my situation and you don’t have a partner/friend who can help you out until things get sorted?

Well that sounds to me like you’ve had your online banking suspended, maybe due to what they deem as suspicious activity or you’ve got your information wrong. Do you have the app or is this online banking?

satisfaction for natwest and hsbc has always been the lowest out of the highstreet banks. Nationwide is much higher (I know it’s a building society) but they don’t have as much good functionality with the app. Halifax are meant to have a very good app.

of course a twitter agent can’t unlock your online banking, they’ll be there to signpost to relevant teams. That agent won’t have access to the banks internal systems to reset any online banking info. What can you do, well you have realistic expectations and not expect a social media agent to solve it and then you call first thing when the phone lines are open. If the issue is just online banking then you’d still have the usability of your card or has that been blocked too? If that’s the case then that’s Likely suspicious activity and you’ll need to speak to the fraud team.
