What's going on with Banks?

Had to go into the bank today and went to the counter to wait my turn.

Was approached by a man with an I pad and when I told him what I wanted to do, he told me one of the staff who floats around with an ipad would have to do it. I couldn't do it at the counter.
Why wait till your in the queue to tell you?
Where are the signs telling you where you must wait for different things?

Anyway told me to take a seat and someone would come along but nobody did.

He took me out of a queue I was in, just to sit and wait for longer.

Eventually got seen and business done on I pad.
Have no switched bank accounts.
What is it now
with staff now with I pads?
Why aren't they behind the counter?

Shambles.

This was literally my old job.

We had massive redundancies made (pre covid) and was left with skeleton staff. They didn’t recruit under the excuse of “people Bank more online”. But we still had the same volume of customers who were regulars come in day in and day out.

It was such a hard transition for staff and customer to make, they brought in the iPads to try and take people out the counter queue so people who literally can only use the counter (passbook accounts) could be in and out faster. But as the OP says some staff take poetic licence with this and ask customers to wait for an iPad without actually checking who was free.

Our branches had targets on what transactions were done on an iPad compared to a desktop computer which had to be met. If the paying in machine wasn’t being used enough it was deemed we was a member of staff over; because machine must be first point of call.

PomTiddlyPom · 27/07/2023 22:04

So your problem is that Ipad didn't come soon enough. Why are you banging on about the Ipad itself?
It's not worse tjan a counter y'know

Exactly this. Spot on. Nobody was free.

Changed bank now.

Yanbu. Last time they suggested I bank on my phone. No spending happens on this device at all.

Tell them to shove it and go elsewhere, there are plenty of banks where you don't have to go online.

Makes me laugh, pushing online, no wonder so many fraudsters, didn't have this years ago.

There was none of this online fraud about, so has going online been that good?

Don't go online, you won't be scammed.

Awful awful awful advice.

you can still be scammed if you don’t use online banking. Scammers are incredibly clever and have phone call scams too.

online is more secure, no paper statements to be intercepted, stolen or improperly disposed of

Why not? I get an instant notification when money is accessed as well as temp blocking cards etc.

Windercar · 27/07/2023 23:24

Bank online like normal people. Not been inside a bank for 20yrs, why would you?

you do realise according to official figures 98% of people bank online. Why should the rest of the country facilitate your desire to go into a physical space and get angry at iPads?

What difference does if they are behind a counter make?!

Well generally they don't have £20 notes in their IPAD

Mind you Natwest dont have cash at the counter on Saturdays and have to go in to the office to get it (every transaction) or ask customers if anyone is making a large deposit could they come to the front as Mick wants to withdraw £100 and it will save them having to go into the office

I'm not complaining. I don't give a shit if every bank in the country closes tbh.

The other day I had a cheque to pay into my account.
You can pay cheques on mobile phones, but because my nan's handwriting isn't very clear (she has arthritis) it rejected it online.

So I had to go to a branch to do it.

What would I have done if all the banks were closed?

I can assure you that 20 years ago you would have needed to visit banks frequently. This poster said she hasn't visited a bank in 20 years...

this poster is me. I am 45, I have not been inside a bank since I left uni (where my bank was) as 23ish.

I mean clearly the answer is stop using cheques. They’ll be completely disappeared in 10yrs time when all the older people using them have died. I’m not trying to be mean but it’s factual

Tell that to my 86 year old housebound nan who has really bad arthritis.

That is the only way she can send money to family for birthdays etc.

I have internet on my phone but I can't afford the data, I'm on cheap plan meaning I can only use my phone for calls and texts.

I have to have wifi at home because of my voluntary unpaid work. Which I do for my mental health. I can't do a 9 to 5. And being disabled I shop online.
But after my Wi-Fi bill and my basic mobile smartphone bill and all the bills for my care etc I can't afford a more pricey mobile plan.

@Mademetoxic and with all the kindness in the world, as I say, that won’t be a problem in 10yrs time. Times change.

Right so you're saying she won't be around in 10 years to send money to family?

How very rude of you.
