Was it always like this? You go to a hen do or whatever and someone starts ranting about Their Beliefs (JK Rowling/ climate change/ Brexit/ whatever) and even if you happen to agree with on the substance them it feels like a massive lecturey downer when all you want is some light socialising. It's so rude to expect people to just sit under a mudslide of your views. No one thinks the same on every single "issue of the day" so are we all to just live in purist isolation?

I don't care what you think, Hayley! You sulky old bruiser with your "witty "political t-shirts and flat your mum bought for you at 40 and your complete abstraction from the real world.

And half the time their views change on a dime anyway and they can't remember what they thought last week but they sure as heck think the opposite now with sullen conviction.

Sometimes it's good to get things off your chest, eh?

takealettermsjones · 27/07/2023 11:18

😳

Nuca · 27/07/2023 11:20

What kind of hen dos have you been going to!? Somehow it sounds even worse than the one recently where an op said she was licking cream off a strippers knob

SmileyClare · 27/07/2023 11:21

God yeah. So many Hayleys clamouring for recognition and attention, too arrogant or ignorant to understand their views aren’t revolutionary, and no cunt wants to have them bellowed into their ear on a night out.

😂🤣

Catspyjamas17 · 27/07/2023 11:22

I don't find this to be the case. I suggest you mix with different people.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 27/07/2023 11:23

Well it seems like you have a particular person(s) in mind that you're ranting about, but honestly I'd rather talk to people about the issues of the day than polite chit chat about inconsequential bullshit.

I have just got back from a few days away with my in laws where talk about a particular kettle on offer in Robert Dyas occupied them for at least two hours, so I might not be in the right mood to answer this question just yet. They are lovely people but Oh My God.

Anotherchristianmama · 27/07/2023 11:23

Stop going to hen dos

Randomnamehere · 27/07/2023 11:24

What would you like to be discussing OP? Perhaps the feeling is mutual.

Hiddiddleyho · 27/07/2023 11:25

I'm Hayley and my mum is Karen, how unfortunate 😂 she didn't buy me a flat though, I might have a word 🤔

MasterGland · 27/07/2023 11:28

We are in the grip of a crisis of meaning and many people are flip-flopping from one flimsy ideology to another, desperate for something to latch on to. I've definitely noticed it. I find it interesting, but also quite a sad reflection on where we find ourselves as a society.

Gettingbysomehow · 27/07/2023 11:28

I have some friends like this. I dont go out with them or people who are serious bores like my ex husband who was always miserable no matter how much fun we were having.
We only have one life then we'll be dead forever. Don't waste it.

neverbeenskiing · 27/07/2023 11:31

You just need better friends. I don't know anyone like that. I socialise with a lot of people who care deeply about politics and social justice but they're definitely not "humourless" or "po faced", they're funny and considerate and happy to talk about 'lighter' stuff too.

SmileyClare · 27/07/2023 11:33

I know what op means. It’s not the topic of conversation, Hell- it’s not a “conversation.” It’s a ranty lecture from a person getting off on the sound of their own voice, convinced that the whole room are in awe of their ground breaking political stance. or visions of a brave new world.
There’s no room for reasoned debate or differing views.

I think I’d prefer watching someone putting squirty cream on a stripper.

Thats a good synopsis 👍

Regholdsworthswaterbed · 27/07/2023 12:02

I've never been on a hen do where we've done anything other than get pissed and dance to be honest!

HRTQueen · 27/07/2023 12:07

I have backed away from friends

I don’t agree with their opinions on why people voted Brexit, vote Tory and the Transgender issues. If you don’t agree with them you are a bigot

they tend to surround themselves with those that hold exactly the same opinions it’s like their social media life has tipped over into real life. I don’t need to be debating all the time it’s exhausting

SkaterBrained · 27/07/2023 12:10

People who spend a lot of time on line, getting a rush from everyone agreeing with them in their echo chambers have confused this with real life.

I've noticed it too, OP, so tiresome even if you agree. It pretends to be putting the world to rights, but is really just lecturing - the other persons input doesn't matter.

ManateeFair · 27/07/2023 12:12

I see people are confusing Mumsnet with their personal journal again

lopsyl · 27/07/2023 12:13

Agree, OP.

It's always boring and sours the mood. And I say that as someone who holds some of the less fashionable viewpoints.

What also annoys me is that these types often assume that everyone agrees with them.

Destinedforfakeness · 27/07/2023 12:22

Dude who are you hanging out with?!

Ventureintheslipstream · 27/07/2023 12:30

I get it and also find it odd that I think there is a presumption that people all feel the same. I've noticed parents at DC's school being very open about certain beliefs, presuming we must all agree just because we live in the same area (?). I have to keep my mouth shut at some of the crap they come out with but really try not to humour them or give the impression that I tacitly agree. It's a bit like the parallel thread on bringing 'your whole self' to work- it's hugely inappropriate. Whatever happened to not discussing religion or politics in large groups?

I also find the critical thinking skills of these people are extremely lacking....

ForestGoblin · 27/07/2023 12:33

I know!!! Never discuss religion or politics it's the civilised way!!! Stick your Fuck the Tories necklace up yr jumper because I don't want to think about all this stuff CONSTANTLY.

OP posts:
GabriellaMontez · 27/07/2023 12:34

Totally agree. Reminds me of the other thread, where the OP wants to leave her husband because he doesn't agree, quite enthusiastically enough, with her on climate change.

whatsappdoc · 27/07/2023 12:35

I feel that the people I hear giving opinions are not what they themselves have thought about but what's current on social media and sounds plausible or edgy. I don't get involved, I prefer talking about kettles (see above post).
