AIBU or is DH - Bin bag on bin day!

This is obviously lighthearted.

It's bin day today in our house. Our general waste is being collected. All bathroom bins have been emptied (only gets done once a week).

DH says the kitchen bin should be emptied and a new bag put in even though it's less than a 1/4 full just because it's bin day. It usually gets changed every 1-2 days.

I say it's only 1/4 full and no need to change it earlier and waste the liner just to send it away with the general waste collection.

Our general waste wheelie bin is never ever full. Usually less than half.

Who is BU?

YABU = all the bins should be emptied regardless of how full they are on bin day

YANBU = emptying a bin that's 1/4 full is wasteful of the liner etc and unnecessary.

What does your household do?

I can't actually see the voting as I'm on the mobile app but I'm sure someone will be kind enough to tell me the results in a question in a while!

Kitchen bin emptied weekly (but only collected by bin men fortnightly).
Food waste is separate so no smells and to be honest, not that much general waste either.
No way would I waste a bin bag on a 1/4 full bin (and presumably its a small jin anyway as you otherwise empty it so regularly).

Was not expecting so many replies Grin

Looks quite mixed so we're obviously not completely off the money!

To answer a few questions

-wheelie bin is collected weekly here ( no option to do food waste separately yet) I compost what I can though.

  • no point putting all the bathroom bins into the main one as they have liners anyway so it's still wasting more liners.
  • we use biodegradable liners to try and reduce plastic waste but I'd still rather not waste 3/4 of a bin liner every week.
  • the amount we empty our kitchen bin can vary a lot. Daily if everyone is home at the same time but if we're all out at work and nursery etc then it can be 2-3 days.

Our bin liners cost a fortune!! They're custom fit ones for our bin and biodegradable. 60 liners set us back the best part of £20.

Can't you just empty the contents onto the kitchen bin and retain the liners??

But YANBU - if the kitchen bin isn't full (and the wheelie bin is emptied every week anyway) then it doesn't need emptying until it's full. You are so right! 😁

bumbledeedum · 27/07/2023 20:11

Not the point of the thread but why are you wasting money on biodegradable liners for genera waste? It won't be left to degrade?

EBearhug · 28/07/2023 01:00

I empty the bathroom bin into the main bin, and retain the bathroom bin liner.

strongcupofTea · 28/07/2023 01:16

Does it really matter what you do?

How on earth is your bin only half full? We have 2 massive bins always full by bin day AND we recycle meticulously.
Do you have any children?

Mrsjayy · 28/07/2023 07:30

I can't get over £20 for a roll of bin bags no wonder you want to use every last cm your dh and his throwing money away !

Undecicive · 28/07/2023 07:40

There's enough plastic being wasted, no way I'd chuck one out when it's not bursting. The only exception to this is the food waste bin which gets rank fairly quickly.

BiddyPop · 28/07/2023 12:27

Your DH would think us totally skanky. We only put out the general waste bin when it's actually full, not every collection (and have done for over 20 years). It goes about every 6-8 weeks on average. We empty internal bins as needed, bathrooms generally weekly and kitchen when full. We tend to do a sweep of bedrooms/bathrooms/kitchen on days we're actually putting it out - but while I do the non kitchen ones with a big bag in hand for everything, I'll only empty the kitchen one if it's at least half full, otherwise it waits for the next one.

Our recycling is normally full the other week in the fortnight but sometimes we get 4 weeks from that. The brown bin is the same day as recycling and that's normally emptied about 5 times a year.

YABU! All the bins should go on bin day!

Your DH changes a bin liner costing 33p when it's half full ?😵

I pay £1 for 20 liners and only change them once every 2 weeks.

Smugasabug · 28/07/2023 15:12

I guess if your bins are emptied weekly it’s less of an issue but mine are 3 weekly so make sure every last bit of rubbish goes out

phoenixrosehere · 28/07/2023 16:12

YANBU

A bit wasteful to dump a bag that’s not even a 1/4 full just because it’s bin day.

Ours general waste is only picked up every fortnight as is the recycling and garden waste. Food bin is picked up every week.

We only have the large kitchen bin and a plastic carrier bag as a rubbish bin on the top floor. Family of 4 (2 kids 5&8) and the house rubbish goes out to the gw bin about once a week. Our recycling into the recycling bin, 2-3 a week, food bin 2-3 to the outside for bin. Food bin and recycling are usually full compared to general bin which is usually 75% full after two weeks.

VillageWitch22 · 28/07/2023 16:54

Everything goes on bin day, regardless on how full the kitchen bin is - it gets emptied into the wheelie bin. Our bins are only emptied once a fortnight and fill quickly.

StrawberrySquash · 28/07/2023 17:56

NotBotheredAnymore · 27/07/2023 08:46

Depends how often bin day is. Mine is fortnightly and the thought of rotting kitchen waste being in an outside bin for 13 days is revolting. We empty all bins for this reason.

But if bins are only emptied fortnightly rubbish is going to be waiting 13 days whether outside or in. If anything outside is nicer.

blahblahlandgoogoodoll · 29/07/2023 09:39

@CherryMaDeara I'm glad you feel my pain!

I buy expensive bin liners because our kitchen bin is custom fit liners but is really useful. I also buy biodegradable ones as I hate avoidable single use plastic use.

I wish we had food waste & weekly recycle bins. Sadly our council have weekly general waste and fortnightly recycle & glass. No food waste at all.

I compost what I can for the garden & actually brought a second recycle bin as it's forever full.
