AIBU or is DH - Bin bag on bin day!

This is obviously lighthearted.

It's bin day today in our house. Our general waste is being collected. All bathroom bins have been emptied (only gets done once a week).

DH says the kitchen bin should be emptied and a new bag put in even though it's less than a 1/4 full just because it's bin day. It usually gets changed every 1-2 days.

I say it's only 1/4 full and no need to change it earlier and waste the liner just to send it away with the general waste collection.

Our general waste wheelie bin is never ever full. Usually less than half.

Who is BU?

YABU = all the bins should be emptied regardless of how full they are on bin day

YANBU = emptying a bin that's 1/4 full is wasteful of the liner etc and unnecessary.

What does your household do?

I can't actually see the voting as I'm on the mobile app but I'm sure someone will be kind enough to tell me the results in a question in a while!

All bins emptied here for bin day regardless of how full they are.

I'm with your DH

Depends how often bin day is. Mine is fortnightly and the thought of rotting kitchen waste being in an outside bin for 13 days is revolting. We empty all bins for this reason.

Surely this happens regardless unless you don't use or throw anything away until bin day.
My bins will be emptied tomorrow morning but there'll be peelings etc in the food caddy tomorrow night.

Cherrysoup · 27/07/2023 09:29

It’s a waste, I’d leave it.

rainbowstardrops · 27/07/2023 09:41

If the bin is only a quarter full, couldn't you empty the bathroom bins into the kitchen one?

Mrsjayy · 27/07/2023 09:42

Yes just put the bathroom any other bin rubbish in the bag and bin it all,

EBearhug · 27/07/2023 09:43

I wouldn't do a quarter-filled bag. I didn't last week. But I compost snd recycle a lot, so I don't usually have too much in the main black bin.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/07/2023 09:44

To me it’d depend on what’s in the kitchen bin. Any food, or anything at all smelly, def. out on bin day.

Otherwise I’d tend to leave it.

Smugasabug · 27/07/2023 09:45

Every bin is emptied for bin day regardless of how full.

Superpinkflowerpower · 27/07/2023 09:48

Empty it, Female fruit flies are capable of laying hundreds of eggs within their brief life spans. Eggs are most commonly laid on moist, fermenting food masses such as overripe fruit and vegetables. Within 24 to 30 hours, fruit fly eggs hatch into larvae known as maggots.

😊

If we need to change the bin that close to collection, we put a new black bag in first, then one of the smaller pedal bin bags (which we use in waste bins in bedrooms, bathrooms etc) is hooked over the top.

That way we catch anything that misses the smaller bag in the new black bin bag, but tbh generally just need to remove the pedal bin bag and chuck it with whatever has been put in it, into the wheelie bin just before collection.

Would that work for your DH, OP?

mommybear1 · 27/07/2023 09:54

I'm team DH definitely empty all bins on bin day.

Mirandathepandaisontheverandah · 27/07/2023 09:55

Food waste or anything smelly - chuck. Otherwise wait until it's full.

Peony654 · 27/07/2023 09:56

I’d say yes if the kitchen bin includes food waste. Ours doesn’t so I wouldn’t as only gets full once a week at most, and it’s a small bin.

Coral569 · 27/07/2023 09:56

I'm with you, I'd have left it at only 1/4 full. Once full the bag is stored in the outside bin anyway and collected a week later.

ShippingNews · 27/07/2023 09:57

I'm with DH - all bins get emptied on bin day .

BackupFail · 27/07/2023 09:57

Our bins go out when they're full. We pay per collection.

ReviewingTheSituation · 27/07/2023 09:59

Slightly tangential, but this thread makes me wonder how many local councils collect food waste separately...

All our food waste is collected weekly by the council, so none of that makes it into the kitchen bin, so there's nothing in there to go off/smelly/manky.

But this thread is making me think we're in the minority here - other councils must surely collect food waste? It's one of the biggest problems in landfill because of the gas it gives off as it decomposes. Or are people still putting food waste in their kitchen bin even if their council collects food waste?

Our kitchen bin contains cat food pouches, random bits of kitchen roll and films off the top of things (yogurt pots, trays of meat/fish), non-recyclable food wrappers, and I think that's about it. I wouldn't empty it just for bin day if it was less than half full.

Twillow · 27/07/2023 10:00

Change it when it's full. If it's bin day I would probably empty the other bins in to fill it but if not required wouldn't stress.

TaigaSno · 27/07/2023 10:00

Controversial third option: I don't use bin liners! I put rubbish into the kitchen bin, empty kitchen bin into big bin outside. Rinse out if/when needed (food waste is in a separate bin). No need for a liner.

Frabbits · 27/07/2023 10:04

Meh, if it's not full then what's the point transfering it from one bin to another.

PrinceHaz · 27/07/2023 10:04

Our main bin is only emptied by the council every 3 weeks so I absolutely put everything in it on black bin night.
You could compromise and put the final drubs and drabs in a shopping bag instead.

Our council don't collect food waste separately.

We have a recycling bin for aluminium/plastic/paper and a box for glass.
A bin for garden waste and then a bin for general waste that food has to go in to.
They all get collected fortnightly.

CurlewKate · 27/07/2023 10:11

It's have to be nearer three quarters full for a new one on bin day.

TheChosenTwo · 27/07/2023 10:11

We would empty on bin day even if only a quarter full. We are on fortnightly collections (as I suspect so many now are) so I don’t want anything sitting in the outside bin longer than necessary.

Tighginn · 27/07/2023 10:12

Anyone else impressed that household rubbish is collected weekly?!?
