AIBU or is DH - Bin bag on bin day!

blahblahlandgoogoodoll · 27/07/2023 08:41

This is obviously lighthearted.

It's bin day today in our house. Our general waste is being collected. All bathroom bins have been emptied (only gets done once a week).

DH says the kitchen bin should be emptied and a new bag put in even though it's less than a 1/4 full just because it's bin day. It usually gets changed every 1-2 days.

I say it's only 1/4 full and no need to change it earlier and waste the liner just to send it away with the general waste collection.

Our general waste wheelie bin is never ever full. Usually less than half.

Who is BU?

YABU = all the bins should be emptied regardless of how full they are on bin day

YANBU = emptying a bin that's 1/4 full is wasteful of the liner etc and unnecessary.

What does your household do?

I can't actually see the voting as I'm on the mobile app but I'm sure someone will be kind enough to tell me the results in a question in a while!

Depends what's in it. At a quarter full, we probably wouldn't bother unless there was something really stinky/unpleasant.

WeWereInParis · 27/07/2023 11:29

We always empty it. But because we have nappies and our bin is only collected once every two weeks our general waste wheelie bin is often fairly full. So we can't leave rubbish from the previous fortnight to be added to the next fortnight's bin.

Mischance · 27/07/2023 11:30

No - I would not put a bin bag out into the outside bin unless it was full. There is enough plastic being put into landfill.

I live alone and have system where my indoor bin has a liner and then I put a small biodegradable bin liner on top of that - so I fill the small one and take outside, and the big liner stays put.

Ohhmydays · 27/07/2023 11:32

Yeah empty all bins on bin days regardless of how full, however i use smaller bags during the summer and put out at night as the house ends up full of fruit flies otherwise

gingercat02 · 27/07/2023 11:35

We don't use bags in the small bins so everything from bathrooms (no menstruating women), bedrooms and lounge go in the big kitchen bin and then that one bag goes in the wheelie bin full or not, as it only goes out every 2 weeks

longtompot · 27/07/2023 11:53

I empty the bathroom bins, if they just have a few lightweight items in, and poo bags from the garden and final cat litter change into the kitchen bin if it's only partly full. If the kitchen bin is only a quarter full, unless it's smelling, and the bathroom bins needs a complete bag change, then I'd leave the kitchen bin. Bin bags, especially good 30L kitchen ones, are really quite expensive.

TenderDandelions · 27/07/2023 12:01

Our kitchen bin gets emptied when it's full or when the cleaner comes. Bathroom bins get emptied when the cleaner comes (every 2 weeks). No way am I emptying a bin that's got loads of room left just because a half empty bin is being collected before the next half empty bin collection.

If your wheelie bins stank and were outside your front door I might have a different opinion, but ours are tucked away outside round the side of the house, so even if a bag has to sit in it for 2 weeks, it doesn't cause any issues.

Myfavouritecolourisanimalprint · 27/07/2023 12:18

Our kitchen bin is tiny but I hate to waste the bag if it's not full. We tend to go round the house with a large bin bag though, so that does bathroom/bedroom bins, change the cat litter on the way past, then we just empty the kitchen bin into that so that we can keep hold of the bag that is already in it. It's not especially smelly (apart from the cat litter obvs) as we recycle and compost a lot more than we throw out. Our residual bin is emptied fortnightly and is rarely more than half full

Ariela · 27/07/2023 12:59

We compost, and there is NO food in the waste bin in the kitchen (separate food waste which I only need to use if we have bones - rare- as our dog eats pretty much everything else, so that goes out every 1-3 months if that).
I recycle most weeks - card, paper, glass, plastic etc. Soft plastics go to supermarket, tetracycle via local waste collector to raise funds locally etc
Kitchen bin is emptied about once every 2-3 weeks into main bin, main bin goes out about every month to 2 months. There is nothing to smell or stinky, so it can be emptied to main bin when full - no point in making work.

amyds2104 · 27/07/2023 14:11

All bins emptied here on bin day and put in kitchen one if 1/4 full.

hot2trotter · 27/07/2023 14:19

God I see a lot of shite posted on here.

But yes, I agree with DH.

Ohthepressureofaname · 27/07/2023 14:31

Our black bin is emptied fortnightly. As others do we recycle food waste and paper / plastic etc so nothing smelly or gross goes in there. We don’t use bin liners, there’s no need so we empty whether it’s full or not and give the bin a wash out.

Dombasle · 27/07/2023 14:33

Can you not just tip the contents out and save the bin liner for another weeks worth?

Onesnowynight · 27/07/2023 14:44

Empty on bin day. Ours get collected every 2 weeks, cardboard every 2 weeks, food bin every week, and paper/glass weekly.

I’m with your DH here - always empty the bin on bin day!

Use kitchen bin bag to empty all the other bins into?

all bins are emptied on bin day just just all recycling is put out

BugsyDrakeTableScape · 27/07/2023 14:47

Dombasle · 27/07/2023 14:33

Can you not just tip the contents out and save the bin liner for another weeks worth?

This is the sensible answer

Batshit1 · 27/07/2023 15:03

Depends.. if there was something like a roast chicken in there then I would make a point of emptying it. If it was just general floor sweepings etc I’d probably leave it.

Ponderingwindow · 27/07/2023 15:09

Kitchen bin almost always has something potentially smelly so it goes out even if not full. “Clean” trash could stay for weeks or even months until the bin is full and I do have a bin that in a hobby space.

CherryMaDeara · 27/07/2023 15:11

YANBU. We have the same issue in our house.

We don’t put food waste in the bin so it doesn’t smell, so it should only be changed when full.

decaffonlypls · 27/07/2023 15:16

Absolutely not our outdoor bin is rammed back bin day anyway

Createausername1970 · 27/07/2023 15:17

I would put it out, mainly because its then taken away in the dust lorry and not taking up space in the outside wheely bin, just in case there is a reason why they can't collect the next week.

I learnt this the hard way, as I forgot to put the wheelie bin out one week and by the next week they had gone on strike, so it was about 3 weeks before it was fully emptied again. and was overflowing with black sacks. So everything that can go out, goes out.

Threemyopicmice · 27/07/2023 15:20

YANBU

Theoldwoman · 27/07/2023 15:22

YABU - empty all bins on bin day and keep everything fresh and clean!

Theoldwoman · 27/07/2023 15:26

Tighginn · 27/07/2023 10:12

Anyone else impressed that household rubbish is collected weekly?!?

In Australia, but our general waste is collected weekly.

NotBotheredAnymore · 27/07/2023 16:49

@ReviewingTheSituation
Our kitchen bin contains cat food pouches,

Pets at home accept them but you are more likely to have a Co-op nearby. They also collect bread bags etc
