Birthdays are shit when you're an adult

KingKhazi · 27/07/2023 06:33

Today is my birthday. I'm 36. Managed to get the day off work but not doing anything as I've got no friends, no kids, no partner.
The weather is shit. Was going to take the dog for a walk along the river but its pouring down and my dog is most definitely a fair weather dog!
I've had to wake up early to take my brother to work because his car is fucked. Don't even live with him. Chances are he'll have forgotten it's my birthday. He has no money either.
No money to treat myself to anything.
No cards or presents to open.

I'm 36 and my physical health is declining. I feel old. Sad. Lonely.

Thanks everyone and happy birthday to those celebrating too.

Took myself and the dog out for a drive to a very popular but very beautiful village in the cotswolds (about 30 miles from me) and was lucky to find a free parking space (as in no cost) which was a bonus. Had a walk. Sat and watched the other dogs splashing about in the river than runs through the village. My dog wasn't having any of it!
Then bought chips for £2.50.
Had a notification on my kfc app to say I'd got 2 free chicken pieces so picked those up on way back! Will have those with some salad.

Sounds ideal! Hope the weather wasn't too bad.
Been some great advice on here, hope it's helped you to feel a little more optimistic. And less alone, knowing you're not the only one who feels like this on special days ❤

Another member of the ‘it’s my birthday today’ club signing in. Happy Birthday to all of you!

I had a bacon sandwich and hot chocolate for my lunch (a total indulgence) and unearthed the frozen/cupboard ingredients from an ancient Gousto meal from better times for dinner. As I don’t want cake laying around for days, I made 4 lemon muffins from a Home Bargains ready mix in the airfryer.

Other than that, it’s been business as usual. I hope you’ve managed to find some enjoyment in your day.

User3826 · 27/07/2023 18:32

Happy birthday. To make you feel better everyone around me forgot my 40th.

Hope you managed to find some fun in your day today.

Beebumble2 · 27/07/2023 19:01

Happy Birthday, glad you enjoyed Bouton on the Water???
How lovely to have your beautiful dog friend with you. Now how about a pampering bath, after obtaining some lovely wine and a bar of chocolate. After that, all cosy, you and pooch could watch a indulgent film!
My birthday is at one of the worst times of the year, I’ve learnt to take control of the day and not let others spoil it ( by forgetting!)

Happy birthday I’ve just had the best one ever for decades all from friends in our flats. Everything I need for the next few weeks I got toiletries chocolates favourite savoury biscuits. Wonderful, a cuddly dog to cuddle not a real one I've called it Matthew.

Omg, how tactless!

CustomerServiceSmile · 27/07/2023 21:21

Happy birthday lovely! Also to the others on this thread having a birthday. Have a bloody big glass of wine (if you drink that is). Birthdays are crap as an adult. I dread my birthday Xx

Most things there are practically free. Pampering can be done with free stuff- sugar and olive oil, book from library, cheap cake! Breakfast, music, walk etc etc Nearly all free!!

What you’ve done there is just make another list of things that are mostly, er, groceries. I mean, if they ARE free and I’ve misunderstood for 30 years then I’m pleased to hear it. Especially the olive oil.

LilacRain12 · 27/07/2023 22:07

I'm going to be 38 in 2 weeks and am in the same position. No partner, no friends, crap job. I will just be letting it pass as well.

LilacRain12 · 27/07/2023 22:16

Also, friends and relationships do fall into some people's laps. Others have to work a lot harder and it's natural to feel fed up about it when others don't have that problem.
I'm glad your day turned out well OP and that you found some joy in it x

Happy birthday to all of the July 27th people, it’s mine too today.

It sounds like your day turned out better than you thought, OP. It sounds lovely!

I usually feel really pissed off on my birthday, I always make an effort for others but it’s never reciprocated when it’s my turn! it’s actually been a bit different this year even though I wasn’t expecting it to be and thought it’d be just a usual day.

I spent the morning with my son at the school where he teaches and helped him set up some displays in his classroom for next term, not a conventional birthday activity but I really enjoyed myself. He then took me for lunch. It was so good to spend time with him, we weren’t getting on particularly well last year. In fact we were barely talking except to argue daily.

Are you talking about the list I gave- the list of things to do that will make someone feel nice when they’re not having the best day? And the olive oil is an eg of something if op has no money for eg an exfoliation product. Library: free, music/- if op has no electricity or internet yes that’s not free, but she has a car so I’m assuming she has some means of listening to music, lovely walk free, nice breakfast at home, use some of her food that’s already there to make something nice- people don’t have to go out and spend money. The olive oil if that’s your example there’s other alternatives but I’m sure she has something in her bathroom to pamper herself- you don’t need to buy expensive products to pamper, most people now have at least a bottle of moisturiser a shampoo and conditioner- leave the conditioner in for a long amount of time and there’s your pampering. Pop some cheap nail varnish on from a pound shop there’s your pampering

Don’t go! Tone is really hard to convey on the internet. I got what you meant and I’m pleased you had a good birthday. Sometimes it’s nice to see or hear of other people having a nice time and think it might happen for oneself. Enjoy Matthew.

Mary46 · 28/07/2023 19:43

Hope the day went well. Dog walk sounds nice. Do you have a boots card sometimes you can get something cheap if you use your points. I met a few thru my walking group. Its hard to meet people otherwise. Happy Birthday

bridgetreilly · 28/07/2023 19:46

I find it really odd when grown ups take the day off work and expect special days. It’s just not a big deal. But even children go to school on birthdays, sit exams on birthdays, have doctors appointments or whatever. I think it’s just better to have more realistic expectations.

I've sent you a private message, @LilacRain12.

Ifonlyiweretaller · 28/07/2023 23:17

As a twin our birthdays growing up were tricky. We had to share bigger gifts (Pram, bike etc) and so often we'd get cards addressed to "the twins." Rather than the excitement of a card each.
Now, however (in our late 50s) we feel privileged to share our day - we have so much fun from start to finish!

Spinewars23 · 28/07/2023 23:34

Yep sure the day of my 40th was saying goodbye Nan, earlier that month in Harrogate as my Mum said goodbye, Nan went a few minutes before my 40th.
