Unless you are a toddler and are talking about bananas.

People never used it back in the good old days of MN.

If you mean we are not to use Nana for our grandmothers, you are being unreasonable. I had two lovely Nanas, and I’m 48 so it was used back in the day.Much prefer it to Nanny.
If you mean grown ups shouldn’t say nanas to be mean bananas, fine, although I’ve never heard anyone do that. Or are you talking about it in the context of “hoochie mamas, show your nanas?”

Thank you @Marsyas "Hoochie mamas show your nanas" has made me properly laugh Grin

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 20:13

I like "the mothership", too.

Language is endlessly fascinating, as this thread demonstrates. If you're less interested in it, then just scroll on to one of the eleventy billion female friendship/wedding/MIL/shit husband threads.

You don't like it, so nobody else should use it?

Ok

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 20:14

I love Mammar, as well, Louise.

What if you speak Hindi. Are we allowed to use Nani and Nana then for grandparents?

Yellowlegobrick · 26/07/2023 20:15

I find it annoying too. Mainly because I associate the term "Nanny" with someone who provides childcare.

I don't think its regional. My parents are from the North West and use grandma/granny/grandpa/grandad.

Poppins2016 · 26/07/2023 20:15

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 19:49

Just like "fuck it".

I don't know why anyone would find a bit of snobbery about Nanas and Nans personally offensive, though. I wouldn't find it offensive if someone said they disliked the names "Granny" or "Grandmama".

Well...

I suppose tthere's a difference between not liking something (for what it's worth, I dont like the terms Nanny/Nanna or kids either) and acknowledging freedom of choice/turning a blind eye to your dislike, versus actively policing it and saying that you wish nobody would use the term again just to suit your preference....

Threemyopicmice · 26/07/2023 20:15

I HRFT but in North Wales Grandad and Grandma are called "Taid" (pronounced " tide") and "Nain" (pronounced "nine"

QueSyrahSyrah · 26/07/2023 20:16

I call my parents Mummy and Daddy and my children still call me Mummy despite being over 18. I know that's not popular on here, though.

Are you by any chance from the Home Counties OP? Have you ever been North of Cambridge?

You know the place, drive as if you're going to visit dear Cordelia at Uni and then just keep going. There's miles and miles of North up there, absolutely awash with people who call their Grandmother's 'Nana'.

I know you won't believe me but lots of them also have their dinner in the middle of the day, and call their evening meal tea. It's like the Wild West.

Wink
Zanatdy · 26/07/2023 20:16

I had 2 Nanna’s growing up, my mum is Nanna, it’s a perfectly reasonable word for a grandmother

EarringsandLipstick · 26/07/2023 20:16

Language is endlessly fascinating, as this thread demonstrates.

You're not talking about language tho?

You are specifically objecting to people using a specific word, just because you don't like it.

MhairiLynette · 26/07/2023 20:16

My niece has a granny and a nana as well as a grandad and other grandad. I had a nanny and grandad. It could be regional and I don’t have a problem with any of them.

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 20:16

WhineWhineWhineWINE · 26/07/2023 20:14

Ok

It could actually be expanded to "things that ought to be outlawed", though that's already been done to death. Things like tattoos and those bum-scrunching leggings that someone on MN memorably described as looking like a giant arsehole.

I wish people wouldn't make silly remarks!

LuluGuinea · 26/07/2023 20:17

🎶Yes we have no bananas.🎶 Not nanas. Bananas. Else it doesn't scan.

minutemouse · 26/07/2023 20:18

Huh? It's what I and virtually everyone around me call our grandmothers. (Nan-nar rather than Na-Na)

Eloweeese · 26/07/2023 20:19

How about this one?

To wish people wouldn't use the word "nana"
SpringIntoChaos · 26/07/2023 20:19

So what do you call your grandparents OP?

I'm actually saddened by the snobbery shown here! Being a grandparent is the most wonderful privilege! Hearing your grandchildren call out your name (Nana, grandma, Oma, granny, Nanny, whatever their choice is 💕) is such a special thing, that really doesn't need sullying with class snobbery!

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 20:20

There are actually some very lovely names for grandparents on this thread. So it's not entirely just 'snobby'. One of my (mainland European) grandfathers was known as Grompère.

Threenow · 26/07/2023 20:22

It has nothing whatsoever to do with you what name people use for their grandmothers. As for "People never used it back in the good old days of MN" - I find that very hard to believe - I had a Nana, and I'm about to turn 64.

Of all the ridiculous posts.

gingerguineapig · 26/07/2023 20:23

Nana for grandmother is fine, I had a Nana and a Grandma.

I feel like Nan is quite a London expression?

Grandmama is a bit too posh.

Could go the whole hog and get DS to call my mum Grandmater I suppose.

I don't think you are being unreasonable in relation to Nanny though, I don't like that either especially as you mentioned JRM!

Purplemoon123 · 26/07/2023 20:25

This thread has made me howl - nobody has mentioned it yet but we call a nana a nannan here in Yorkshire 😂

littleripper · 26/07/2023 20:26

Granny makes me feel sick tbh - along with anyone over the age of 4 using mummy or daddy. Just repulsive. Nan, Mum, Dad. Solid, strong.
Fuck off OP
