Unless you are a toddler and are talking about bananas.

People never used it back in the good old days of MN.

Not sure what business it is of yours what I call my grandmother

Blossomtoes · 26/07/2023 19:33

curtaintwitcher23 · 26/07/2023 19:30

My Mum always recoiled at the thought of being called Nanna but I really don't understand why - it must have some subconscious origins somewhere

I don’t blame her, it’s awful. My family has grannies.

TomatoSandwiches · 26/07/2023 19:33

If I want to use that as a word then quite frankly it's nana your business.

At risk of turning this into a TAAT, it’s barna, not ‘nana so YANBU.

You call your grandma barna?

greenteaandmarshmallows · 26/07/2023 19:30

Nana and 'nana are pronounced differently usually

Oh, is this about shortening banana to nana?

You're right, i also think the pronunciation is different.

Grandmother- nana, short sharp 'a'
Banana - nana, long 'a' sound. Like nar nar

Why is it awful?

My family tried to work it so you had a different name for each. So I had a granny and a nana. (as do my own children).

Kimfluencer · 26/07/2023 19:35

Maybe 🍌 should be the new biscuit?

DinnaeFashYersel · 26/07/2023 19:35

Amazingly there are different regional and local variations of dialect across the UK

Shocker.

My kids call my mum Nana, she thinks Grandma sounds really old.

IDoughnutKnow · 26/07/2023 19:36

Oh - sorry. I confused matters by mentioning bananas. I meant "Nanna" as in "Granny". I was only thinking about bananas because I've read several threads recently and my mind has thought "banana" when someone has said "Nana". But, yes, I mean "Nana" as in "Nanna". Someone upthread said they preferred Nana to Nanny, but I think Nanny should be outlawed too (unless it's of the Rees Mogg type, in which case it's a perfectly good name).

I hate granny it sounds so old. Also my mum's surname is Smith so it was definitely a no from her!

But you still haven't explained why nana / nanna is so offensive to you? As many of us have (or had) nanas that we really love, you should explain...

But as others have pointed out, it can be very regional. Certainly very common in ireland.

Are you going to outlaw Nonnas as well? And Nanis? And Nai Nais?

It’s funny, our associations. To me, Nanna sounds much, much older than Granny or Grandma.

Rubyupbeat · 26/07/2023 19:39

We have used Nana for generations, my Nana called hers Nana.over 100 years back and probably further than that, I hope to be a Nana too.

You should be sorry for being an insufferable snob, not for being shit at writing.
