Unless you are a toddler and are talking about bananas.

People never used it back in the good old days of MN.

Why does it bother you? My youngest grandchild calls me nana, the older ones call me Nan, I really don’t care!

KarmaStar · 26/07/2023 23:02

So you're wishing other people don't use the word nana when you won't see or hear them but YOU want them to stop?
Joke.

pillsthrillsandbellyache · 26/07/2023 23:03

It's funny that someone mentioned the Whitehalls, as we are acquainted.

This is the most fabulous boast I have ever read on here though. Bravo 👏

Chopchopbusybusyworkwork · 26/07/2023 23:05

i spent the ages of 9-18 in an area where it was always Nan and Grampy (or Grancher)

I had a granny and grandad, everyone thought we must have been very posh but this couldn’t have been further from the truth. We were just not locals and even after 40 years I’m still not classed as one!

SerafinasGoose · 26/07/2023 23:10

Always been Grandma in my family, or Gran as we got older.

My MiL insists on Nana, but they are from the North West and it's interesting to see from this thread that this is the more common term there.

Nanny Seaside is brilliant though, and I love 'Grancher!'

RosesAndHellebores · 26/07/2023 23:11

Has anyone mentioned Nana Miskouri?

Why give a fig? I used grannie, the dc use grandma Penny and Grandma Ann (not their real names). DH calls his mother Ann and occasionally calls me faire wifey. The latter does not go well.

I don't think I wish to be known as gran, grandma, grannie, nan, nanny or nanna. I think I may insist on my name.

ShodanLives · 26/07/2023 23:13

PuddlesPityParty · 26/07/2023 22:09

But why are you comparing it to banana 🍌 that would be nar-na where as for grandma context it would be NaN-Na

You realise not everyone pronounces things the same way?

MysteryBelle · 26/07/2023 23:13

I don’t like the word Nana either, or Nan. It’s just not a pretty word although of course it is a beautiful word to anyone whose grandmother goes by that name. Likewise, I don’t like Grandma, Ma, or Mamaw, they’re not pretty names either. However, my mother is known as Mamaw to our children and so of course it is very dear to me for that reason. That doesn’t mean I think it is an appealing name or an attractive name because it’s not.

I’m trying to think of names I like as a shortened name or nickname for grandmother and I can’t think of any 😄 will be reading thread for possible ideas.

MysteryBelle · 26/07/2023 23:15

Agree with @RosesAndHellebores, I don’t like Gran or Grannie either. Surely there’s a better name.

doubtit · 26/07/2023 23:33

I call my parents Mummy and Daddy and my children still call me Mummy despite being over 18. I know that's not popular on here, though.

Give over!!

How dare someone who does this tell me not to call my nana, nana 😂

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 26/07/2023 23:35

”Nana” is what ITV families say, abhorrent word for grandmother.

Thosesummernights · 26/07/2023 23:37

I adore Nanna. I associate it with my very posh Grandmother on Daddy’s side. My poor children have to use Granny which honestly, I hate.

WednesdayLounge · 26/07/2023 23:38

All of mine were Nanna (we always spelt it with 2 n's I don't know why) with a distinguishing name after or before. So More Nanna was called because she was Most Nannas mum (Most Nanna was the one we saw the most). Then there was Nanna Surname and Nanna Place name...

My children have a Nanna First name, Nanny First name, Nanny nickname and my mum who gets to be a Nanna B'nanna because she is a bit 😂

Lou670 · 26/07/2023 23:39

My Mum's Mum was Grandma and my Dad's Mum was Nanna. When I had children I kept the same, as in my Mother in Law was Nanna and my Mum was Grandma.

Justleaveitblankthen · 27/07/2023 00:08

curtaintwitcher23 · 26/07/2023 19:30

My Mum always recoiled at the thought of being called Nanna but I really don't understand why - it must have some subconscious origins somewhere

Yes, my mum was just the same.
Her mum, grandmother to many, was only ever Grandma and my mum would never have answered to anything else.

LaMaG · 27/07/2023 00:08

RitzyMcFitzy · 26/07/2023 20:33

I'd have said Granny was more common in Ireland than nanna. Everyone I know has a 'granny'.

In Ireland too. I think from what I've observed your Ma / Mam becomes the Nan / Nana and your Mum becomes Gran. Not sure if it's a class thing or rural / urban thing.

Personally hate Nana too, don't even know why.

Marsyas · 27/07/2023 00:27

You couldn’t be more wrong in our case.

FeigningConcern · 27/07/2023 00:33

What a weird thread. I am going to be a nanna soon. Much prefer it to Grandma or Grandmother personally. We can't wait to be nanna and grandpa!

MammaEvz3 · 27/07/2023 00:34

Wow.
Some right snobs on this thread.
I had two Nana's, my mother is now a Nana to my DC and one day I will also be a Nana so fuck you OP and other Nana haters. We absolutely will not stop using it. It's the only acceptable one for me. Nanny, Granny, Grandma etc. No thank you!
Being referred to as X's Mummy also makes me shudder. I am nobody's Mummy 🤮🤮

FeigningConcern · 27/07/2023 00:36

@IDoughnutKnow "I don't know why anyone would find a bit of snobbery about Nanas and Nans personally offensive, though. I wouldn't find it offensive if someone said they disliked the names "Granny" or "Grandmama"."

Snobbery and dislike are two different things. Snobbery is looking down on someone else. Dislike is just a different opinion.

Viviennemary · 27/07/2023 00:38

I agree. It's awful.

LadyGAgain · 27/07/2023 00:41

My dear Nana would have been 123 next month. She chose Nana. She said "Nanny is a mother goat" and my mum already had a Grandma.
My Nana's daughter is my mum. She chose Grandma.
My DH mum (MIL) chose Nana as her mum was Nanny.

There's no class attribute in this. I hear Nana, Nanny, Grandma, Granny and think of a beautiful role.

LadyGAgain · 27/07/2023 00:41

(Oh. And if I'm blessed to have grandchildren. I'm Nana)

Well aren't you charming 😠

howtowriteahaiku · 27/07/2023 00:56

How weird. It’s quite Irish to use the word “nana”, it’s never occurred to me to like or dislike it, it’s just a word like chair or apple or any other word. The list of things over which people on MN will judge you seems to grow longer every day.
