To be worried about volcanic activity in Tenerife?

Due to be going in August.

From what I can see, there's been increasing earthquake activity throughout July. The official line is that it's not of concern, but if you read all the expert articles they basically say an eruption is due at some point and there's very little way to say exactly when.

Looking at what happened in La Palma in 2021 it began the same, ramping up of earthquakes. People being told it wouldn't happen. Then it did.

But the trouble is Teide is much closer to major resorts than the La Palma one was, if it happened soon it would be peak holiday season plus the Tenerife eruption has been predicted to be larger than the La Palma one, with tsunamis and all sorts.

My family are not appreciating my worry putting a dampener on the holiday - so AIBU or is this a legitimate cause for concern? I think all the talk of wildfire evacuations and things for holidaymakers at the moment has got me jittery.

Literally the first thing I've seen about this.

PrudenceDictates · 26/07/2023 08:44

I think this makes it quite exciting!

Poppysmom22 · 26/07/2023 08:45

Honestly it's a live volcano it's always burping and farting. It will go off at some point but the odds of it being the week you are there are miniscule

Unless you happen to be on a Teide excursion at the time Wink

I know, you're so right - it's basically going to pot everywhere. Half of Europe seems to either be on fire or with crazy storms so may as well take your chances. It just makes me worry horribly.

Stop worrying and panicking. Get a grip!!! If it happens whilst there then you deal with it.

Maddy70 · 26/07/2023 08:48

Honestly I live near there. Noone is worried , it's nothing out of the ordinary Have a great holiday

SleepingStandingUp · 26/07/2023 08:49

Make sure your insurance is comprehensive
This is what holidaying in Europe means these days

CantGetABreak · 26/07/2023 08:49

For those saying it sounds exciting and deal with it if it happens, Teide isn't a small friendly volcano. We're talking an Etna / Vesuvius / Pompeii style eruption.

I do remember , I think it was the Icelandic volcano that stopped a lot of flights because of the clouds of dust . Was it 2008 ?

Poppysmom22 · 26/07/2023 08:50

For context the geological conditions around tiede cause around 1000 earthquakes a year. There's no indication of clear gases or geological bulging as conventionally occur before an eruption

CantGetABreak · 26/07/2023 08:51

I think what worries me most is looking at how La Palma was reported, everyone was told in the media it was nothing to be concerned about until literally a day before it happened.

And with the current Greece wildfires, people are still being told it's safe and to come back.

I think there's a lot to be said for the drive of the tourist industry (which I understand because these countries need to survive financially) versus risk management.

burping and farting volcano . Sorry, but this made me smile!

implantsandaDyson · 26/07/2023 08:52

I was nearby 3 weeks ago (had a brilliant holiday, we all really enjoyed it) and nope there was no worry about it at all. As posters have said it's an active volcano, it's activity fluctuates.
My eldest was with us and she is the biggest rock/volcano/ Geography type fan I have ever met and she had lots of geography type conversations with people there (youth is truly wasted on the young 😁) and at the minute I say you'll be grand.

Loverofoxbowlakes · 26/07/2023 08:52

I went to Lanzarote in 1995,they said it was overdue a big eruption then, but nothing has happened, the canaries and African coast haven't been wiped out by a tsunami.

Que sera, sera. Just go!

Thanks @Maddy70 that's reassuring to hear from a local. Do you have any kind of alert system or anything to notify you if things change?

I understand the anxiety op but it’s highly unlikely something will happen when you’re there. Could you reassure yourself by doing some basic prep? Eg make sure you have travel insurance, have copies of important docs like passports on your phone/email. Make note of emergency contacts of travel companies etc nothing drastic but stuff that reassures that you are ready in an emergency.

So many neurotic people on MN nowadays

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/07/2023 08:55

We go to tenerife once /twice every year and always pop up tiede - views are amazing

It's always been a live volcano and everyone now and again people scare monger and say it will erupt

It's fine to go. Very unlikely it will go pop

babysharkdoodoodedoodedoo · 26/07/2023 08:55

I personally definitely wouldn’t be going but then I’m massively anxious so maybe don’t take advice from me? Or do? I don’t know 😂 I live abroad and travel loads but if I’d seen this just before going to a certain place then I’d not want to go anymore.

Thanks, that's interesting. Was that during or before the first week of July? That's when I read the unusually high seismic activity had been?
