To be worried about volcanic activity in Tenerife?

Due to be going in August.

From what I can see, there's been increasing earthquake activity throughout July. The official line is that it's not of concern, but if you read all the expert articles they basically say an eruption is due at some point and there's very little way to say exactly when.

Looking at what happened in La Palma in 2021 it began the same, ramping up of earthquakes. People being told it wouldn't happen. Then it did.

But the trouble is Teide is much closer to major resorts than the La Palma one was, if it happened soon it would be peak holiday season plus the Tenerife eruption has been predicted to be larger than the La Palma one, with tsunamis and all sorts.

My family are not appreciating my worry putting a dampener on the holiday - so AIBU or is this a legitimate cause for concern? I think all the talk of wildfire evacuations and things for holidaymakers at the moment has got me jittery.

For those saying it sounds exciting and deal with it if it happens, Teide isn't a small friendly volcano. We're talking an Etna / Vesuvius / Pompeii style eruption.

Well Etna is erupting almost continually without causing any major issues.....

implantsandaDyson · 26/07/2023 08:57

Yes, it was the first week of July. School holidays start at the end of June for us.

Thanks @Maddy70 that's reassuring to hear from a local. Do you have any kind of alert system or anything to notify you if things change?

Saying that. I currently live in an earthquake hotspot. And the alert systems are the worst part! Here, when there’s going to be an earthquake, an air raid siren thing starts blaring and then there’s an COUNTDOWN FROM 10-1 to when the earthquake will begin! It’s scarier than the earthquake! I’m not a fan of warning systems 😂

CindersAgain · 26/07/2023 08:58

If you read the Wikipedia article it does say the type of flow would be similar to Etna and Vesuvius, but also that the effects would be very localised. In ‘Future erruptions’.

Omg does Tenerife have that? I think I would have heart failure.

Alot of the med goes up in flames every summer. It's just the combination of dry winds and heatwave have exacerbated it this year. Greece is basically a pine forest which has an extremely high resin content which is highly flammable combine this with the needle litter of the forest floor and you have yourself a very burnable fuel source chuck in a heatwave and dry winds from the Sahara and you have perfect conditions for fires. It's always a rick in warm dry weather. Do you remember the moor fires here last year?

I think you need to take a break from news and doom scrolling OP, I really do.

Possibly. But my doom scrolling managed to stop my best friend going to one of the hotels on Rhodes that has been worst impacted by the fires this year. She was due to be there right when this all happened but I'd been keeping an eye on things and kept telling her I thought it was a bad idea, so at the last minute she paid the fee to switch to go to Portugal instead. So, sometimes, my news following turns out to be right.

i lived on Tenerife for a number of years and I always wonder about Teide. It’s really well monitored and they issue warnings years/ months in advance - it would not ever erupt suddenly. The top of Teide has an observatory and the place is crawling with scientists - I don’t think you have to worry.

Its an incredible place to visit and I really think you should enjoy your holiday and visit Teide.

I used to worry much more about the anything happening at the massive Cepsa refinery which is on the only road out of Santa Cruz

4 days before, when there were fires on the other side of the island but, at that stage, not anywhere near where she was due to be staying. Everyone else was saying she should be fine where she was as it was so coastal but my gut instinct said not.

Is your point that we could make a decision re: Tenerife closer to the time rather than worrying at this stage?

No OP, that’s not what @Convincemebob is saying at all. Are you looking for permission from somebody here to cancel so you can justify your irrational fears?

Interesting, thank you. What worried me was I've read a few articles by various scientists from the Canaries volcano groups and they all seem so non committal, saying there's no real way to be precise about when it will happen and there's a big margin for error. They also seem to agree that it is going to happen during the 50 year period following 2016. That didn't fill me with confidence. But I don't know how much was lost in translation to English.

I am incredibly risk adverse. But have no interest in "dining off" anything. I very much want to be doing things so I don't create obstacles just for the sake of it.

No, I was just wondering what the point was? I'm not looking to cancel at all, my family would not forgive me. I'm just looking for perspective both from those with more information than I (the comments by locals and recent visitors are especially interesting) and those who think my thoughts are totally unfounded.

I honestly wouldn’t worry. They’ll know about any forthcoming g eruption at least two weeks before it happens. Vesuvius is more active than Teiresias and millions of peop,e quite happily live around it.

No. I will just go on holiday worried and on hyper alert.

Obviously if an actual local came back with information that strongly backed up my concern, I would look into it further. But short of that - no.
