To be worried about volcanic activity in Tenerife?

CantGetABreak · 26/07/2023 08:41

Due to be going in August.

From what I can see, there's been increasing earthquake activity throughout July. The official line is that it's not of concern, but if you read all the expert articles they basically say an eruption is due at some point and there's very little way to say exactly when.

Looking at what happened in La Palma in 2021 it began the same, ramping up of earthquakes. People being told it wouldn't happen. Then it did.

But the trouble is Teide is much closer to major resorts than the La Palma one was, if it happened soon it would be peak holiday season plus the Tenerife eruption has been predicted to be larger than the La Palma one, with tsunamis and all sorts.

My family are not appreciating my worry putting a dampener on the holiday - so AIBU or is this a legitimate cause for concern? I think all the talk of wildfire evacuations and things for holidaymakers at the moment has got me jittery.

I'd be more worried about Yellowstone going. That would be goodnight for everyone.

GasPanic · 26/07/2023 10:49

Is Tenerife the one where it could burst open in a massive bang at any time and dump half of the island in the ocean causing a tsunami that destroys the world ?

If you are worried about volcanoes next time I recommend Blackpool.

Starchipenterprise · 26/07/2023 11:09

Someone posted about this on another site. Conclusion was no one knew and nothing to worry about.

So many neurotic people on MN nowadays

I think we are too used to the UK being a fairly 'safe' place. Half of Europe has intense heat or serious wildfires. Asia has typhoons, monsoons and nasty diseases if you get bitten. The Caribbean has hurricanes. The US has everything from hurricanes and tornadoes to earthquakes and mountains of snow. People who live in these places and travel there regularly just get on with it, over here we only see what the media report which is often 10 times worse than what is actually happening, and it panics people.

You're not at all reassured are you OP?
I can feel your anxiety in every post, and your questions are a tiny bit irrational.
It must be awful to feel like this.
I have been to the summit of Vesuvius and Etna. We could smell the sulphur and feel the heat. It was brilliant. I just thought we wouldn't be allowed anywhere near if there was the slightest risk.
I hope you have a lovely holiday and are able to relax.

Clarich007 · 26/07/2023 11:53

Sorry, what I meant to say was that every time someone trues to reassure you about it and plenty have, you bat their answer away and come back with some other worry.

Honestly, wherever you go outside the UK there is a risk of some sort. We are such a safe country in so many ways.

You probably have more chance of winning the euro millions than a pyroclastic explosion occurring the exact week you are there!

If you tend to catastrophise a lot like this then maybe some CBT would help you?

Even if you stay in the UK. I was in the Llyn Peninsula at the time of the 1984 earthquake which was 5.4 on Richter scale.

For those saying it sounds exciting and deal with it if it happens, Teide isn't a small friendly volcano. We're talking an Etna / Vesuvius / Pompeii style eruption.

Ah, my chosen specialised subject as a former volcanic geochemist.

You might be talking about a fairly explosive large scale eruption with Teide, but then again, you might not. Although it's a stratovolcano a lot of its volcanism is fairly basaltic in character, so more flowy and less boomy in simple terms. If my memory is correct it hasn't had a really big, immediately dangerous eruption for thousands of years.

Of all the volcanoes to worry about it having a bit of an increase in activity, this one isn't high on my list. If it worries you, just don't go up into Las Canadas or up the peak itself (although you'd be missing out on a treat - Teide was the first of many active volcanoes I ever visited and it's very rare to be able to stand at 12000ft and see down to sea leve in all directions).

And have ignored posts by scientifically knowledgeable posters.

I went up it in 1982 when I was 10. I didn't know it was meant to be dangerous.

Australia and Indonesia have the most poisonous animals.

Vesuvius burps and farts (love that!) and has trails of steam coming out pretty much all the time, I’ve trekked up it. The place we are going to in August has numerous earthquakes and it had one on Sunday which was shallow depth and widely felt.

We were also in LA when we had a fairly decent wobble from an earthquake, you have to either accept the risk or avoid the areas and holiday elsewhere.

It's when the volcano is a MN user and snaps and farts then you need to worry! 😂

It makes it onto the decade volcano list though.

Clearly Etna isn't entirely harmless.

I think the idea that "you wouldn't be let anywhere near if it were dangerous" is somewhat optimistic given my experience of going to places where there is danger present.

I'm also there in August.
Not worried
Enjoy your holiday

1983Louise · 26/07/2023 13:11

Why didn't you just book to go to Cornwall 🙄

Jowak1 · 26/07/2023 13:17

The earthquakes would have to ramp up lots in frequency and be greater than magnitude 6 on the scale before the probability of an eruption. They would also close down the visits to Mt Teide if there was a big increase in frequency. They would also test the gases being emitted from the area. As pp have said it's an active volcano so there always something going on. I would try and not worry and enjoy your holiday. It's a great place and Mt Teide a fascinating place to
Visit
( I am a Volcano geek 🤓)

TenderDandelions · 26/07/2023 13:27

We went a few years ago when it was last reported that an eruption was "imminent" (it didn't happen!). The worst thing that happened to us was a local tour guide we'd booked for a stargazing trip rearranged our trip to the following week (incidentally I'd highly recommend those trips, particularly the private ones, rather than bus loads of people).

You've probably got more chance of winning the National Lottery 10 times with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 than getting caught in a volcanic eruption.

The first documented eruptions happened in 1704, 1705 and 1706. It didn't then erupt until 1909.

The only recent article I can see online about it is in the Express, which is the worst of all the tabloids for over exaggeration. According to the Express we've all been expected to be buried under 6 foot of snow every winter for the last goodness knows how many years.

It's scaremongering clickbait, nothing more.

mywifeandkids · 26/07/2023 13:28

You should go up there ! We went on an excursion when I was younger, stopping off at a monestary, a place that made goats cheese, churches etc and then on up to teide, we also had a camel ride (would not recommend that)
The roads were the scariest part for me !

Topseyt123 · 26/07/2023 14:27

I'd love to go up Mount Teide one day.

I know that misses the point of the thread.

It's amazing @Topseyt123

Take a fleeece /jumper

It can be 35 at the bottom

Go up the cable car and can be -5 at the top

Topseyt123 · 27/07/2023 03:00

@Blondeshavemorefun So I understand. My parents went up it some years ago. They also went up Vesuvius in a different holiday.

I have a plan to visit Tenerife in the next few years. I've been to plenty of places around the Mediterranean and Europe, and other places too, but not yet the Canaries.
