DH always takes the best banana

If in the fruit bowl there is a new bunch of bananas of optimum ripeness and one leftover from the last bunch, which is a day past it's best, he always takes a new one. The old banana is not unpleasant by any stretch, I'm talking about maybe a few tiny brown speckles on the skin, still reasonably firm. I think you should always take the most ripe banana to reduce the chance of waste. He will always take the nicest banana. I think it's because I grew up poor and he was wealthy. He would think nothing of throwing the banana he doesn't want in the bin, I can't stand the waste.

Yanbu - you should always eat the most ripe banana
Yabu - you should take the banana that appeals to you most

Please help me with this incredibly important issue.

(Don't come at me with banana bread. I already have loads of bananas in the freezer awaiting breading)

Hide the new banana till old manky
Ones gone

CornedBeef451 · 25/07/2023 20:47

I'm very particular about bananas so now any that have gone too far I peel and put in a zip lock bag in the freezer for banana bread.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 25/07/2023 20:48

Bananas piss me off. There's only ever around a 2 day window where they're OK to eat! When they're not ripe, they're hard, and make your mouth dry up inside. Then after the 2 days - they are all squishy and grey and taste too sugary... blehhhh! Confused

ninjafoodienovice · 25/07/2023 20:49

My DH is the same - also with apples.

I sometimes deliberately don't buy any just to see the panic on his face that his breakfast routine is disrupted 😁

WhatADrabCarpet · 25/07/2023 20:50

If you're diabetic, which I am, you don't eat speckled bananas. Far more sugar in them and they taste rank.
Always eat a slightly green banana.

CanYouReachThem · 25/07/2023 20:51

My DH always gives me the nicest fruit. It's one of the things I love about him.

haloeffect · 25/07/2023 20:54

have you thought of putting away the new bunch until the old bunch is finished? Out of sight out of mind?

Some people don't think much of these important issues which is incredibly annoying.

ImNotReallySpartacus · 25/07/2023 20:57

I only eat yellow bananas with no trace of green or brown. Once a banana starts to go brown, it counts as a completely different fruit.

MiddleParking · 25/07/2023 20:58

Sounds like a lot of people aren’t putting enough peanut butter on their bananas tbh.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/07/2023 21:05

I would never chose an old banana. I like them just yellow. DH will eat them a little more brown than I will. Sometimes they are too far gone and then we have banana bread. Win all round.

kingtamponthefurred · 25/07/2023 21:05

We need a Mumsnet Banana Exchange.

User19633654 · 25/07/2023 21:08

Fortunately DH likes a very ripe or overripe banana and I like a less ripe banana

Envy ( not envy)🤮

PissOffJeffrey · 25/07/2023 21:10

You can't really tell the difference once the banana's covered in custard. As all good bananas should be.

TheGoodBanana · 25/07/2023 21:19

I mostly try to use the old banana but sometimes I just really want a nice good banana.

I heard on the radio the other day if you wrap tin foil over the ends or then they don't go ripe as quickly, I am yet to try it but it sounded like it could work.

I have sympathy though, my DC are very much like yours, it's all or nothing with them!

SadOrWickedFairy · 25/07/2023 21:28

Ugh no, not a fan of spotty bananas I like them with bit of green on the skin, just ripe, no hint of squish. I cannot eat mashed up banana or soft, soggy banana the worst ever is cooked banana - just no, no, no.

I would have taken a banana from the new bunch and left the spotty horror for dh.

Savemesos · 25/07/2023 21:41

Banana muffins?

Mouldyfoodhelp · 25/07/2023 22:58

Without becoming a banana obsessive I would have never imagined that so many (presumably) ordinary people have freezers full of bananas for baking

Sleepydoor · 25/07/2023 23:00

Banana Bread.

CrazyCactusCementP0t · 25/07/2023 23:46

I was gifted a banana tree

I was very happy until now, because I didn't know that there was a hierarchy of bananas 😀!!!

HeddaGarbled · 25/07/2023 23:52

No one wants a manky old banana (ditto carrots, potatoes and tomatoes) when there’s nicer fresher ones available.

You need a compost heap.

YeahIsaidit · 25/07/2023 23:53

This is mine (pinched from Mary berry and tweaked)

100g room temp butter
175g sugar (Mary uses caster sugar, I use a mix of 125g caster and 50g light brown as it gives it a bit more of a caramelly taste)
225g self raising flour
2 ripe mashed bananas
2 eggs
2 tablespoons of milk
1 teaspoon of baking powder

Just whack it all into a bowl and mix it up until everything is well mixed and there's no dry flour or anything hiding anywhere. Occasionally I chuck some walnuts in too.

Put the mix into a greased loaf tin and stick in the oven at 180c for 50mins to an hour

YeahIsaidit · 25/07/2023 23:55

Sorry that was in reply to @DoughnutDreams i forgot to quote

StaringAtTheWater · 26/07/2023 00:17

Cut them into chunks before you freeze them and blitz them (still frozen) in a food processor with a little milk. You'll end up with something that looks and tastes like ice cream 😋

Oysterbabe · 26/07/2023 07:59

I ate the old banana for my breakfast this morning. Fair bit spottier than it was yesterday 😐
