DH always takes the best banana

If in the fruit bowl there is a new bunch of bananas of optimum ripeness and one leftover from the last bunch, which is a day past it's best, he always takes a new one. The old banana is not unpleasant by any stretch, I'm talking about maybe a few tiny brown speckles on the skin, still reasonably firm. I think you should always take the most ripe banana to reduce the chance of waste. He will always take the nicest banana. I think it's because I grew up poor and he was wealthy. He would think nothing of throwing the banana he doesn't want in the bin, I can't stand the waste.

Yanbu - you should always eat the most ripe banana
Yabu - you should take the banana that appeals to you most

Please help me with this incredibly important issue.

(Don't come at me with banana bread. I already have loads of bananas in the freezer awaiting breading)

Buy a goat. They love bannanas and will eat the old one.
Problem solved

thistimelastweek · 25/07/2023 18:40

If it were anything but bananas I would agree.
But as far as bananas are concerned, I'd always choose the new one.

OhcantthInkofaname · 25/07/2023 18:41

I take the last banana, peel and mash it with a TBL of cream and freeze it. Its then ready for baking banana bread!

AtomicBlondeRose · 25/07/2023 18:42

DP will eat the old shitty version of any food - week old bread, brown bananas, anything. I take the good ones. I spend enough on food, I don’t pay all that money to eat stuff I don’t even want.

BeansOnToast32 · 25/07/2023 18:47

How brown are we talking because I absolutely love a banana when it's got brown freckles all over, if it had massive brown patches then I probably wouldn't eat it, I don't like eating them if the inside is bruised.

I can't stand yellow firm bananas Envy they are tasteless, I wait for them to get a bit freckled because that's when they taste the best/sweetest.

GoatsareGOAT · 25/07/2023 18:47

I like bananas green, DH likes them yellow, kids like them in between. So eating the least ripe might mean people picking the one they don't want but someone else does!
( Only my mother would eat the brown ones 🤢)

Hear me out... banana bread but add all spice & dried apricots. It's so good & doesn't taste of banana!

You give no shits about food waste? And here people is why the earth is in the mess it's in

rosegoldivy · 25/07/2023 18:49

I am your husband. I will always take the best banana, and I'm gunna be honest, I deserve it.

OldandTired66 · 25/07/2023 18:49

Nope, I always take the most perfect piece of any fruit. That way, at least you get one perfect piece from the bunch instead of always having less than perfect.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 25/07/2023 18:50

Oysterbabe · 25/07/2023 18:34

It is very difficult to buy the correct amount of bananas due to ridiculous children who will eat 3 a day or none at all for a week and nothing in between.

'Due to ridiculous children' 😂😂

treacledan71 · 25/07/2023 18:50

My DH does this and talking of fruit if he helps me put the shopping away he will put the fruit in the bowl still in the bags and leave them including bananas if I get bagged ones.

okiedokie1 · 25/07/2023 18:50

YeahIsaidit · 25/07/2023 18:38

Maybe just buy 3 or 4 bananas at a time rather than a load that end up going manky

1 banana. Not loads. 1. And the OP says it's impossible to know exactly how many to buy as dc sometimes finish them all off in days. Other times they don't

LobsterCrab · 25/07/2023 18:52

Try banana with custard for the slightly older banana. It's my DC's favourite dessert.

HivesChives · 25/07/2023 18:53

LTB Leave the Banana

LTB Leave the Banana

Bugger
Beat me to it 🤣

Hollyppp · 25/07/2023 18:54

I always take the good banana

CurlewKate · 25/07/2023 18:57

What you need is a family that likes bananas at different stages. During lockdown it was brilliant-we had 4 people all liking different levels or ripeness....

CurlewKate · 25/07/2023 18:58

Incidentally- not wanting to waste food is boring to do with being rich or poor. It's about being a thoughtful responsible person.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 25/07/2023 19:02

I agree. When my DH and your DH die can we live in a sensible ladies commune please?

Mine will also open a new jam because it's a different brand or flavour when there is a couple of tablespoons left in the old jar. Or put a jumper in the wash when he's worn it for a couple of hours.

We are not short of money but I bloody hate waste and inefficiency.

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 25/07/2023 19:03

LobsterCrab · 25/07/2023 18:52

Try banana with custard for the slightly older banana. It's my DC's favourite dessert.

Oooh or stuff one with a bit of dark chocolate, wrap in foil, bake and then serve with ice cream. 🤤

FrangipaniBlue · 25/07/2023 19:05

YABU - soft bananas are manky

We buy the bags of eat me keep me bananas because I like them hard and DH likes them squishy 😂

ironorchids · 25/07/2023 19:06

If no other banana is good enough for him then no other banana should be good enough for anyone, so unless he thinks he's more important than everyone else or that only other people should do the work of throwing old things away and not him, then he should throw the other bananas away if he thinks they're not good enough.

tt9 · 25/07/2023 19:11

get a monkey. he/she will eat all the bananas.

problem solved

also monkeys are very difficult to manage (I have had several... ) so will distract you from all other issues in your life

IdealisticCynic · 25/07/2023 19:11

I agree, OP, banana bread is not the answer (it’s rank). Your real options are

  1. LTB or

  2. this recipe: https://www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/perfect-banana-pancakes-recipe

(On a slightly more serious note - this happens in my house too. And yes, husband grew up rich and I didn’t. Definitely a factor.)

I'm the weirdo that likes spotty half brown bananas so I'd personally consider the new ones unripe.
