One week into the summer holidays and if I hear ‘I’m hungry.’ One more time I might actually bang my head against a brick wall!! Helppppp!
(light hearted(ish) of course.)

I'm tempted to get one of those revoluting grazing tables in for the summer

TheChosenTwo · 25/07/2023 16:59

How old? Mine are old enough now to help themselves, it’s much easier when they can solve their own problems! Can you give them a shelf in the fridge to go and get something independently?

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 25/07/2023 17:01

Give them a snack box for the day so they don't have to ask?

Dillydollydingdong · 25/07/2023 17:01

Get some loaves of bread and sandwich fillings, leave them out, then it's DIY.

Gerrataere · 25/07/2023 17:01

I saw someone on Facebook had made a ‘snack box for the day’ per child, so had crisps, biscuits, fruit and such. Once the kids had finished it for the day then that was it. Obviously I assume with typical full meals as well!

Wouldn’t work for mine, but I thought it was a good idea for some.

Haha my 3 year old has been the same that's all I've heard since she's got up this morning x

CurlewKate · 25/07/2023 17:02

I used to have a labelled box for each child and put a day's worth of snacks in each every morning. A bowl of apples. And the stuff to make toast and marmite. That was it. It worked for us!

3AndStopping · 25/07/2023 17:03

It’s not just the constant requests, it’s the refusal to eat anything they don’t really fancy at that precise moment.

God I'd have loved this as a child. Be my mum. Now.

Roselilly36 · 25/07/2023 17:04

My boys ate consistently in the summer hols, so that was probably why the trousers they stopped wearing in July never fit by September, waist and legs.

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 25/07/2023 17:05

If I ever said "I'm hungry", my dad would just say "Hi hungry, I'm dad" and that would be the end of that Grin

Keykaty · 25/07/2023 17:05

Are they bored?

Whataretheodds · 25/07/2023 17:06

Boil 12 eggs, stick them in a tupperware and tell them to let you know when the box is empty.

I mean as a kid I’d empty that into the bin. Or I’d eat all 12 then follow my mother around doing world class rancid farts for the rest of the day until she gave me a damn Kit Kat…..

I know precisely zero children who’d touch that box.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 25/07/2023 17:11

How old are they? With mine it’s either snack time or it isn’t. If it isn’t they can bugger off.

Mine would love that, the box would be empty quite quickly!!

OP I’m a nanny (have one of my own but he’s too young to ask for acacia yet thankfully) and it drives me up the wall. So many variations of it as well. Currently we have a very whiny ‘my tummy is rumbling’ ‘my tummy is not full’ theme going on. But then a total refusal of anything offered if it’s not the one thing they have in their mind (usually involving a packet)

I offer toast/fruit/nuts/yoghurt and if a no to all above it’s just white noise to me and I pretend not to hear them anymore. Because an actual hungry person would bite your hand off for at least one of those offerings.

With older kids I did the ‘here’s your snacks for the day, when they’re gone they’re gone’ thing and they soon learnt not to gobble everything by 8:46am.

They're not really hungry then are they, so don't worry if they turn something down.

3AndStopping · 25/07/2023 17:16

I did try yesterday, to give them a lunch box.

sandwich
crisps
cucumber
carrot

Fruit
chocolate
yogurt

I said don’t ask me for anything else now, if you’re full close your lunch box and if you’re hungry go back to it. I just admit it did have some success. I will do that again tomorrow. They’re 6, 4 & 2. The youngest doesn’t ask yet thankfully!

They have legs that look like they’d snap in a strong wind I have no idea where it all goes!

As if feeding 3 humans 3 meals a day + snacks for the next 18 years wasn’t enough 😉

Have you tried one of those automatic pet feeders that only open at certain times?

CurlewKate · 25/07/2023 17:30

The people who say that the snack box idea wouldn't work for them-why not? How can it not work?
