If you want to lose weight and keep it off.

I fast from 8pm to 12 pm. Usually have my first something around 1pm

I haven't actually changed what I eat. I make sure I have some nutrient rich food in me but generally my diet is a bit shit Blush

Anyway, I've gone from a size 16 to a size 10. This happened within 3 months. It's been 9 months now and I've kept it all off! Remaining at a size 10

I don't eat breakfast, ever.

When I was in my teens, I almost skipped breakfast because I genuinely forgot to eat. The same happened early twenties but then after I had my son, I started eating breakfast!

Since that time I went from a size 10 to a size 16.

So yeah, for 9 months now, I just haven't eaten breakfast but haven't restricted myself really and still don't have a perfect diet by any means

I am remaining a size 10 and it's working. I suppose I'm an 'all or nothing' person. And I find the fast easy to stick to because I can eat 0! Sticking to 0 is easier than sticking to 3 sensible meals a day, for me Grin

Now I just have lunch, snack a bit tbh, and then dinner, also snack a bit but not loads as find I don't want to

When I ate breakfast, I found I was hungry all the time!

So glad I did this and took the plunge. Just thought I'd share

Damn my thyroid
I fast from 6pm - lunch time. No weight change at all

Glemarand · 25/07/2023 13:03

It does work, you're right. Not so much for my poor DH who actually has to extreme fast.. All day, only one meal in the evening and nothing else (except water) to lose or maintain weight poor bugger!

I know if I want to lose weight, I do what you've described and it falls off (I'm in my forties).

TenOhSeven · 25/07/2023 13:04

No thanks. If I had to work every morning while I was hangry it would not be good for anyone.

I do wonder if my DH has a thyroid issue and has the same problem. I had my thyroid removed so have to take thyroxine.

When people say fast, does that include a cuppa??

This is actually a misconception. You only become hungry when your body has had something to eat and your blood sugar starts to fall again. You won't feel hungry at all as long as you stick to just coffee etc without sugar. Your appetite will return to normal when you break fasting period after your first meal.
Size 8 at 5ft 9 and have fasted since my teens. Health benefits are great.

I refuse to eliminate my cuppas (with milk) from my diet but it is recommended to drink tea and coffee black. My DH has to have his black.

I personally enjoy a Diet Coke! But I'm not suppose to... fast is suppose to mean things life coffee/tea with no milk, preferably just pure water...

Fantastic if it works for you, but some people are going to feel absolutely miserable and end up bingeing!

I have to eat around every 4 hours (obviously not when sleeping but I do have a bedtime snack Grin ) and actually lost weight since I started doing it. It means I'm never feeling ravenously hungry and it's easy to choose something healthy to eat.

LordEmsworth · 25/07/2023 13:10

YABVVVU.

Great it's worked for you . Doesn't mean it will work, is appropriate, or is safe for everyone.

MorrisZapp · 25/07/2023 13:10

What about people who wake up hungry? I'm highly unconvinced that eating makes you hungry. But then I'm not convinced that two boiled eggs fill you up until lunch either.

As someone with gastritis, eh no thanks. It's literally the worst thing for me to do. It suits some people yes, but definitely not everyone.

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 25/07/2023 13:11

I'd like to do this but always end up giving up as I feel a bit dizzy , as if my blood sugar is low
Not diabetic just low blood sugar if not eating regularly
Is it possible to get past this or just not for me ?

thismeansnothing · 25/07/2023 13:12

I get the theory and glad it works for you. But the practicalities just aren't very ... Practical for me. I work nights. Physical ten hour shifts. I'd forever have to change my fasting window and it sounds like a logistical headache. Ill stick to my calorie counting.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 25/07/2023 13:12

Yeah, you lost me at no cuppa 🤣

I don't tend to eat until 12/1pm, and I'm normally done eating by 7:30, but I need a cuppa first thing in the morning and just before bed

I'm the same - I don't think it is personally.

Some people are just more susceptible to feeling rubbish if they get blood glucose at the lower end.

ElephantLove · 25/07/2023 13:13

@LovingLalo ”the obese lot” oh are t you an absolute joy 🙄

Freetodowhatiwant · 25/07/2023 13:14

I totally agree! I often forget to fast in the winter and life sometimes takes over, but when I want to lose weight and keep it off I do 16:8 and it really works. I too have thyroid disease and take thyroxine. I realise not everything works for everyone but for me it definitely works. Your thyroid does have to be normal and by normal for me that's a TSH of 1. something, nothing over 2 if I can help it. A doctor would tell me anything over 3 is normal and for me that is really not a nice level to be on at all. Anyone with thyroid issues - make sure you check your actual numbers and don't let them tell you it's 'normal' without knowing what works for you.

Saying that, you could try drinking lots of water with electrolytes as it's possible you're not replacing the fluid you're missing by fasting @iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort

Chypre · 25/07/2023 13:14

It definitely works for some and not for others. Definitely doesn’t work for me - I prefer to train in the mornings when my energy is at the highest (and have most uninterrupted alone time), but when I train on an empty stomach I just faint.

JustRingJoeDuffy · 25/07/2023 13:15

Do you think it's the not eating breakfast or the fasting for 16 hours that is key?

I think I could try having breakfast at 8am, having a big lunch at 1pm and maybe a banana around 4pm - but I don't think I'd do well without having any breakfast. I get up just after 6 and bring breakfast with me to have at work, and if ever I forget it I either end up buying a croissant or having a headache by 12 o'clock.
Breakfast isn't huge - oat flakes, some raisins and nuts, yogurt and some frozen berries mixed in a bowl and left overnight in the fridge. But I would miss it a lot if I didn't have it. Whereas I'd be fine with a cup of milk-less tea in the evening - providing I had a big lunch (i.e. soup and main) at lunchtime.

SparklyLeprechaun · 25/07/2023 13:16

I've eaten like that for as long as I can remember, unfortunately I eat too many calories during the rest of the day so still end up overweight. But I dread to think what size I would be if I ate breakfast.

UnfunnyJester · 25/07/2023 13:20

It works for me but I also have to fast between lunch and dinner.
When I used to graze continually in my eating window, I lost no weight.

IveHadItUpToHere · 25/07/2023 13:20

Fasting doesn't work for everyone and isn't recommended for everyone. It's close to disordered eating for a lot of people.
Great that it's working for you ... just now. But it's a bit irresponsible and naive to think that makes it an one-size fits all solution. It definitely isn't. There have even been small studies that say it negatively impacts female fertility levels because of its impact on hormones, etc.
Oh and before the gfs start - I'm not obese or overweight. I am very interested in weight loss 'ideas' being packaged to women with insufficient research on how they actually impact women taking into account the different stages of their life.
