If you want to lose weight and keep it off.

I fast from 8pm to 12 pm. Usually have my first something around 1pm

I haven't actually changed what I eat. I make sure I have some nutrient rich food in me but generally my diet is a bit shit Blush

Anyway, I've gone from a size 16 to a size 10. This happened within 3 months. It's been 9 months now and I've kept it all off! Remaining at a size 10

I don't eat breakfast, ever.

When I was in my teens, I almost skipped breakfast because I genuinely forgot to eat. The same happened early twenties but then after I had my son, I started eating breakfast!

Since that time I went from a size 10 to a size 16.

So yeah, for 9 months now, I just haven't eaten breakfast but haven't restricted myself really and still don't have a perfect diet by any means

I am remaining a size 10 and it's working. I suppose I'm an 'all or nothing' person. And I find the fast easy to stick to because I can eat 0! Sticking to 0 is easier than sticking to 3 sensible meals a day, for me Grin

Now I just have lunch, snack a bit tbh, and then dinner, also snack a bit but not loads as find I don't want to

When I ate breakfast, I found I was hungry all the time!

So glad I did this and took the plunge. Just thought I'd share

I did this before. 16:8 and the old 5:2. Also the fast 800.
It's effective, but I was miserable without breakfast. I have low blood pressure and felt faint. These days I aim for three regular meals between 8am and 8pm.
Great if it suits you, but it's not for everyone.

I never eat breakfast as I'm rarely hungry before midday. Evening meal is around 6.30pm. I've gained a fair bit of weight over the last few years even though I don't eat until lunchtime. Great that it works for you but I've found that menopause sticks two fingers up to however you've stayed slim in the past.

Yup, that menopause thing is a bugger. I’ve been same healthy weight all my life and even though I’m still exercising regularly, actually eating less, drinking less I’ve put on 3kg and nothing is shifting it.

BlossomCloud · 25/07/2023 13:45

Different things work for different people

Essentially fasting works because you are reducing your calories.

I prefer reduced calories spread over 3 meals.

This is not least because I was once anorexic and I find missing meals gives me a dangerous "buzz" and sends me down a slippery slope.

egowise · 25/07/2023 13:46

The reason it works is because it creates a calorie deficit.

Great if it works for you. It won't for most. Don't push what works for you as some magic fix. Because it isn't.

mondaytosunday · 25/07/2023 13:47

My son said you should look at your evening meal as fuel for the next morning.
I've been doing 14:10 but this morning waited for my daughter to get up as she was going to make brunch. We ended up having it at 12ish so it will be 16:8 today. I was hungry at I normally eat at 10 (and am clock watching for that last hour) but realised I wasn't hungry at all after an hour had past. Only down side is I love my breakfast which is an egg, 50gr smoked salmon and some tomatoes, so low calorie, low carb high protein. But I have to shift some weight so calorie counting too.

IveHadItUpToHere · 25/07/2023 13:47

I agree with PP that it shouldn't be in AIBU either. It's just going to get into competitive undereating which is unhealthy and disordered.
Fasting so you can eat rubbish isn't good for you. Food intake isn't just about weight. It's about health.

BlossomCloud · 25/07/2023 13:47

I've lost a stone in two months on 1400 calories a day spread over 3 meals and sometimes a snack. This feels sustainable. (I gained weight rapidly due to steroids, I had been healthy till I got ill, so I fairness it may be that I find it easier because healthy eating is my normal anyway)

OverTheCountryClub · 25/07/2023 13:47

8pm - 12pm? This is why I don't really "get" fasting. I naturally stop eating quite early in the evening- usually by 6pm and sometimes earlier if the kids are ravenous and we are eating dinner by 5pm. Don't tend to eat again until 11am onwards the next day. That pretty much marries up with your fasting time. I can't say weight falls off me - I have lost weight but had to be very careful and even now if I don't watch myself I find gaining weight incredibly easy. I'm also top end of healthy; just 4 or 5 lbs and I'm overweight but find it hard to shift anymore. I was going to try fasting to see if it helps but it seems to be what I do anyway, so clearly isn't a solution for me.

SallyWD · 25/07/2023 13:48

Yep, been doing this for about 6 years. It's now impossible for me to get fat and I feel much better.

NeverHadANickname · 25/07/2023 13:51

I only eat between about mid-day and 6pm ish. I still gain weight. If you maintain eating 3 meals a day then cut down to 2, you are going to lose weight.

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 25/07/2023 13:11

I'd like to do this but always end up giving up as I feel a bit dizzy , as if my blood sugar is low
Not diabetic just low blood sugar if not eating regularly
Is it possible to get past this or just not for me ?

So I use to fast naturally anyway in my late teens and twenties. Never ever felt hungry because as I say, I forgot to eat

Fasting again now took about 5/6 days before I stopped feeling hungry and a bit light headed slightly. Now I'm fine and absolutely do not feel hungry anymore in the morning or want to eat

Mirrordoor · 25/07/2023 13:55

I'm sure it doesn't work for everyone but skipping breakfast does help me quite a lot.

I've lost weight doing it in the past but not losing or attempting to lose weight at the moment. I find that I don't suffer with low blood sugar if I skip breakfast. It's the opposite - if I eat breakfast, no matter how healthy and 'slow release' it is supposed to be, I often get shaky, full of rage and have blurred vision by lunchtime. If I don't eat breakfast, I just feel normal hunger. I also find that I don't want to eat huge amounts after that and a smaller lunch fills me up. It's done my IBS a lot of good, presumably because I'm not constantly digesting.

HamstersAreMyLife · 25/07/2023 13:57

I fast a similar time but weight is increasing just less rapidly. I need to dip below 1100kc a day to lose, age, thyroid and a sedentary lifestyle make it a real challenge.

RudsyFarmer · 25/07/2023 13:58

You have to find a way of eating that works for you. I eat no sugar, no alcohol. Never eat breakfast. When I’m working my first meal of the day is around 3.30pm. Honestly I feel so much better. My chronic pain in one area has gone along side my inflammation lessening (I believe). I can’t say I’ve lost a ton of weight like the OP as I’m later in life where one calorie a day suffices 🤣 but I’m healthy, strong, awake and happy and that feels fucking amazing.

Waffle19 · 25/07/2023 13:58

I’ve been thinking of trying this. After having my DC I started to make an effort to eat breakfast, but most mornings I could happily take it or leave it so thinking of leaving it and seeing what happens. My problem would be more having no food / drink after 8pm! Well done you.

Waffle19 · 25/07/2023 13:59

Also a lot of what other PPs have said makes sense now. When I eat breakfast I’m also starving by 11am so crack out the naughty snacks, especially at work. But if I don’t eat breakfast I can happily go until lunch without a snack

FoodFann · 25/07/2023 14:00

Maybe you should pop this in the losing weight category. It’s dangerous to encourage people with ED to fast. Size 16 can be a perfectly healthy weight

gamerchick · 25/07/2023 14:00

No thankyou. I need a lot of calories and protein a day and would rather have them in a reasonable time frame rather than shoving it all in to a set amount of hours. I don't have trouble with my weight thanks to weight training though and is rather not lose muscle during 'weight loss' because the number on the scales means bugger all basically.

TheaBrandt · 25/07/2023 14:01

Absolutely op. It’s magic. You don’t get hungry til you eat. I have tea and coffee but don’t eat til 1 ish and have to remind myself. Dropped the 2 stone I needed to and kept it off. Everyone’s different but this really worked for me. Plus eat meals on smaller plates.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 25/07/2023 14:02

Yeah not for me, on the odd occasion I have missed breakfast I start feeling dizzy and nauseous even headachey before lunch. Also why start the day on an empty tank but go to bed after your main meal? Surely not snacking or a lighter evening meal is better? Still each to their own. I know a woman who cooks an evening meal for the rest of the family and then sits there eating a bowl of cereal to stay skinny. Depressing.

AuntieMarys · 25/07/2023 14:02

I try not to eat between 7pm and the following midday. Certainly lose weight when I do this. I really don't need breakfast even if I have a spin class or training session

Not eating is one of the triggers for migraine.
I couldn't even consider this!

Ooo I suffer with hymaplegic (excuse spelling) migraines! I have only had one attack in 9 months though

Rather than fasting which I effectively do It's intuitive eating really Listen to your body and only eat when you're actually hungry.
I've never eaten breakfast as it makes me feel sick, so I only need one meal a day
I'm disabled and sedentary so I find it's enough I'm also 58 BMI 22
