To think that people who use parent and child spaces without children are selfish *****

Fill in the starred swear word as applicable.

I've only started truly noticing how many idiots do this since I had my baby 4 months ago. I can't believe how many people I've seen do it. And yes I always call them out and have had some pretty disturbing abuse thrown back.

I have also always reported to the shop staff to be told it isn't illegal and there's nothing they can do bar having a parking attendant out constantly which isn't possible (I know this isn't the shop staff's fault).

No disabled spaces? Fair enough, crack on. But this isn't the case 99% of the time. People use them because they are close to the entrance. I would rather the spaces be far away from the entrance with a small trolley park nearby with car seat/child seat trolleys.

Yesterday I purposefully parked straight down the middle of two normal spaces because I didn't want to risk having to reverse out just to get my baby's car seat back in. As I was walking in I witnessed 3 separate very able bodied people walk back to their cars without children.

Just really pees me off 😒

I don't understand why you can't just park in a normal space? I have a new born and a 3 year old, I also drive a Mokka. I have never had a situation where I had to leave thr seats outside the car to reverse or damage the car next to me. Just be a bit careful!

I like using the p&c but if there aren't any or they aren't free, I don't just use 2 spaces instead.

I’m sitting thinking about all the places I go regularly where I know where the parent and child parking is...

They’re not bigger spaces, they’re regular sized ones

Then they are not real spaces but token ones and pointless

You do realise you can get fined for taking up two spaces, don’t you?,

no you can’t in a supermarket car park. It’s a private car park.

Quisquam · 25/07/2023 11:22

They're not necessary for walking children.

Do think a three year old can do their own car seat up?

Zebedee55 · 25/07/2023 11:29

Many disabled car spaces, including shops, require a blue badge to be displayed, on pain of a fine if it's not displayed.

Mother and Child spaces are concessions, and not obligatory. They require no proof of entitlement.

So, someone could have health problems/disabilities but not qualify for a BB.

So, to be nearer, they probably would feel a P&C space is better for them.

You still can in a private car park.

Nosleepforthismum · 25/07/2023 11:42

I get it OP. I can’t be the only person to wish pain and suffering on those fuckers with no kids who take the last P&C space leaving you to park in the furthest possible bay with two kids under two when it’s chucking it down with rain and most disabled bays are empty. I like to imagine a bolt of lightening coming down on them as they walk back to the car and just evaporating them on the spot 😅

ginghamstarfish · 25/07/2023 11:43

Here we go again. Yes, clearly they are, but as a disabled person with a blue badge, when I cannot get into a disabled space because of all the selfish non-blue-badge displaying twats there, then yes I use a P&C space, with no children in sight. If I can't get a wide space then I can't get out of the car. However I often see the P&C spaces used by people with no child in sight, although those adults and/or hulking teenagers may indeed be 'parent' and 'child' but taking the piss.

My husband has arthrogryposis, his application was turned down, and yes, he did complete the application properly.

Did he appeal? Which council did he apply to/ the GOV.UK application go to? It is very unusual to not get a blue badge in those circumstances. How long ago did he apply?

Anewuser · 25/07/2023 11:58

sorry @FlowersInTheSky they can’t fine you but…

“Private parking companies have no official right to fine you, though they may try to make you think they do. All they're doing is sending you a notice of what they deem to be a breach of contract.”

HerMammy · 25/07/2023 12:04

Maybe if stores put these spaces as far from the entrance as possible, the whinging would stop.

Are you suggesting they should park in a disabled bay instead?

freetheunicorn1 · 25/07/2023 12:10

I don't get the fuss people make of them, they are not enforced so many can park there.

Samlewis96 · 25/07/2023 12:14

jannier · 25/07/2023 08:37

Try getting twins in and leaning across to middle to do up third child with a space that doesn't let you open doors more than 45 degrees or doing up a seat when your 9 months pregnant and can't get through the gap to reach the child seat. Let alone when a twat parks over the line.

How do u manage with 3 small children and a shopping trolley in the supermarket out of curiousity? Are there trolleys with 3 seats?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/07/2023 12:23

EarringsandLipstick · 25/07/2023 09:08

Yes - if they don't have DC.

Wouldn't happen tho. If it's that busy, it'll be busy with P&C, who'll have used the space.

Ah but I meant more if your driving round and round a carpark for a space and a P&C one becomes available.
Should someone without a child drive on or can they park there then?

Happened to me on Saturday but I happened to have my 6 year old DS in the car. I don't need a P&C parking space, but I did need food. I think I probably would have parked there even if I didn't have DS.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 25/07/2023 12:23

My mum parks in them.
I don't - not because I think there's anything wrong with doing so, but I always just naturally shoot for the back of the carpark to avoid a log jam.
Mum doesn't understand the point of them and managed to raise us without.

Oh, so your mum is the type of awful person to inconvenience others by making a shitty point?

I’d be ashamed of her.

Haha, of all the things to make me ashamed of my own mum! Of course I'm not 😅

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 25/07/2023 12:26

Also, DH is waiting on a hip replacement so doesn't qualify for a Blue Badge but physically cannot get in and out the car without the door wide open. He's been 'confronted' by people like OP because he's only young (32) so people just don't believe him.

I completely agree with you OP - however this is MN and in MNLand, even if you have 2 sets of twins under 2 you must park in a normal space and struggle like fuck and leave the P&C spaces just in case the young man in the Audi TT who sprints into Tesco like Linford Christie has an invisible disabilityZ

Meanwhile in the real world it’s a very shitty thing to do, and everyone I know agrees. I once smugly blocked in a man who took up 2 P&C spaces for him and his teenage daughter. I took my sweet time with my then-baby and came out to him losing his mind and not considering his crap behaviour caused this to happen (there were no other P&C spaces and it was in a corner section that meant me blocking him in didn’t affect anyone else).

WeetabixTowels · 25/07/2023 12:30

Also this ‘they’re not enforced’ nonsense - so what. Neither are queues but we all understand he rules and it would be shitty to queue jump

This is the definition of 'first world problems' and I don't give a toss about the cause.
I'm just running off to get my popcorn out of the microwave...🍿
