To take DD back to the GP?

DD is 6 and spiked a temp last on Sunday night suddenly of 39.3 and calpol or ibuprofen didn't bring it down at all so I rang 111 who just said take her the GP tomorrow (Monday) which I did and the GP checked her over and diagnosed a water infection so gave her 3 days of trimethoprim. She was fine in herself just a high temp.

Then yesterday afternoon she started complaining of a sore throat, it got worse all evening although paracetamol and ibuprofen are now bringing her temp down to about 38.

She has been up most of the night crying that it hurts and she can't swallow, I have had a look at her throat and it's all white and spotty so I am now thinking she has tonsillitis as well.

Can I take her back to the GP tomorrow or should I wait to see if the trimethoprim works? I don't want to waste anyone's time but the poor mite is in so much pain :(

I'd see the GP again in case you need to change antibiotics since usually they prescribe amoxicillin or penicillin for strep throat, and she may need to be on them for longer than 3 days. Hope your DD feels better soon!

Trimethoprim is unlikely to be effective for tonsillitis, did they think she had a urine infection?

Tonsillitis isn’t always tx with antibiotics anymore but I’d definitely ring them up and let the GP make the call.

Hope she feels better soon.

The treatment she had was for a different thing, so I'd take her back. The GP will have been expecting you to come back if the treatment didn't work, or the presentation of the illness changed, or she got worse. They won't be annoyed, this is just how it goes sometimes with medicine.

@user1469032438 Your poor DD. I hope she feels better soon. I’d definitely get back in contact with the GP. I don’t know how your GP practice is running but mine offers phone consultations then if the GP feels they need to see you they’ll get you in that day for a face to face. I’d just tell the receptionist that DD was seen yesterday but symptoms have changed and see if the GP can call you etc

Yes I'd go back. Did they do a urine sample?

user1469032438 · 25/07/2023 06:12

Thank you, yes they did a urine test yesterday, they also looked at her throat and said it was fine it's only since yesterday afternoon that her throat started hurting.

On another note she is an absolute nightmare to get to take medicine, it took me half an hour yesterday to get 5ml of calpol in her, does anyone have any magic tips?

Take her back, she needs penicillin for her throat. Trimethoprim won’t work for her throat just for UTI.
I let my daughter push the 5ml syringe in herself like a game and seems to work.

Ask GP to prescribe paracetamol suppositories. My DD won't take Calpol either and the suppositories work so much better and are longer lasting too.

If there are white spots in her throat it's likely strep throat rather than a simple viral tonsillitis, so they'll probably give you amoxicillin. I mix this with a bit of apple juice and my impossible DD drinks it that way.
