I'm 27, DH is 28 and we both work 40 hours.

21 year old is a police officer. 6 days on, 3 days off shift pattern.

Often does 16 hour shifts.

Dd is 21. Until this summer she was at university. Due to her course, and voluntary work experience she didn't do a paid job - so 0 hours.
When on placement she was working [unpaid as placement] full time 5 days a week - averaging around 40 hours a week, plus working at home for prep, etc.

She is working abroad this summer, paid though pretty much minimum wage, and doing around 30-35 hours a week. No permanent job to return to yet so who knows after that.

Her friends vary from 0 hours (full time university with placements so no paid employment really possible) to 40+ hours (full time paid employment) - all very early 20s.

Without context or parameters, this is a meaningless question. What kind of person in their 20s are we talking about? A 22-year-old doing a post-grad degree might not work at all, or might do a couple of evenings' bar work or something. A 28-year-old full-time junior doctor will be putting in a hell of a lot of hours most weeks. A 26-year-old who had a baby a month ago is unlikely to be doing any paid work at all.

@thelionkim Are you going to come back and let us know why you are asking ?

My DS is 25 and is self employed in a very niche IT role in the racing industry. He gets flown all over the place, doesn’t earn a lot and it’s as and when. He manages to pay his bills. Probably works two weeks out of four.

I would guess that those who are unemployed, or those with unemployed children are less inclined to comment.
