DS1 28 acting sergeant in the army, he starts work anywhere between 7am& 8.30am. Finishes when his end of day conference meeting finishes which is usually 6-6.30pm. He sometimes does weekends. And more hours if he’s away, like last week.

DS2 26 is a charge nurse. He usually does 4x13 hour shifts a week. He usually does 3 as a rule but he and DDIL are expecting a baby so they’re saving up for when she’s on maternity leave, hence the overtime.

Messyhair321 · 24/07/2023 19:50

mine is 22, and at uni, she works outside of term time, and usually 26 hrs a week, but I think if she wasn't at uni she would be working full time,

LookingForRemoteWork · 24/07/2023 19:55

My son is in his 20s, he's a grown up so works fulltime, 37 hours a week

WhatHaveIFound · 24/07/2023 19:59

It varies. Last week DD worked 40 hours over 5 days. This week she'll work one 12 hour shift. Two different jobs which she does in the university holidays. Term time she works approx. 2 x 6 hour shifts a week.

Pre university she has a retail job where her contracted hours were 20 but she would often work 35-40 hours.

iolaus · 24/07/2023 20:01

1 is working fulltime (I think 40 hours) the other offically works 30 hours with an apprenticeship which is meant to have 10 hours a week studytime (she tends to work about35 hours plus her college work)

Appleofmyeye2023 · 24/07/2023 20:04

Once kids are working full time and left education, they’re working full time - or should be. And that’s same for any adult whether 21,41 or 66 .
most full time contracts are 35-40 hours, with a 37.5 hours per week being very common.
off course, if they can’t find full time work and are in zero hours work then it could be a lot less. They’ll need to get multiple contracts potentially to make up thst 37.5 or whatever
if I had a grown up kid that was only working 21 hours and not looking to work the remaining hours, and living at home still I’d be doing a lot of persuasion and downright ultimatums after say 6 months

cptartapp · 24/07/2023 20:27

DS doesn't work during uni term time.
Does around 35-40 hours a week when home though.

WedTheBed · 24/07/2023 20:31

I’m 27, I work 30 hours a week. Monday-Thursday 9-5. I have two children so Fridays are my weekday with them and weekends are full family days. I’m lucky enough that my job pays well enough that we are comfortable without me needing to work full time. Once they’re both in school I will go back to working 5 days a week though. You can never have too much money.

My sister (20 years old) who is also my colleague works 40 hours a week.

TimeToMoveIt · 24/07/2023 20:31

My 20 year old does 20 hours a week, also at uni

Ds who is 28 has his own company so depends, some times over 40 other times if he doesn't need to go in he doesn't. Although tends to do a few hours of paper work on those days

ASoapImpressionOfHisWifeWhichHeAte · 24/07/2023 20:34

As others have said, this is a weird question as "twenties" is a long decade with a lot of changes for most people. At 20 I worked about eight hours a week because I was a full time university student. Aged 27 I worked a 40 hour week in a graduate career. Aged 29 I worked zero hours a week as I was on maternity leave with my first child. I was in my twenties throughout!

BarbaraofSeville · 24/07/2023 20:43

Pick a number between 0 and 80+, depending on whether they're students, or possibly SAHP right up to in the kind of graduate trainee scheme that owns their soul in the early years and everything in between.

Wazzzzzuuuuuuup · 24/07/2023 20:46

My son has just turned 20 and works 40h per week

MrsR87 · 24/07/2023 20:46

I’ve not long left my 20s. In my early 20s, I was a full time student at university so did anywhere between 5-20 hours a week. Then once qualified in my choses profession I was doing about 55-60 hours a week from the age of 24.

Chowtime · 24/07/2023 20:51

3 kids who all work full time.

I understand though that people currently in their 20s have a different work ethic than their parents generation and value work/life balance more highly than we did. Which is good.

Fileexplorerrrr · 24/07/2023 20:52

My son, early 20s works 50+
He enjoys what he does, loves the money and is trying to progress as far as he can before 25.

My niece on the other hand who is the same age has only ever had one ‘proper’ job and that lasted 6 months! She’s once again out of work 🙄

LondonQueen · 24/07/2023 20:55

Dh and I are late 20s, DH about 35-40, Im a teacher contracted to 32.5, but do 50 most weeks once you add the hours I do at home.

My cousin who is 20 works 35 hours a week and does uni part time, his brother works anywhere between 8 and 40 hours (retail).

ArbitraryHaddock · 24/07/2023 20:57

One on maternity leave and two self employed working 50 hours a week.

Essie274 · 24/07/2023 20:59

Odd thread but I'll bite. DH and I are both mid-20s.

I work in paid work approx 12hrs a month (predominately a SAHP).

DH works on average about 25-30hrs a week. It varies hugely.

Most of our friends work 30-40hrs, predominantly condensed hours and/or WFH.

Bluebellbike · 24/07/2023 21:13

My 26yo DS works 45 hours per week. He is a chef. Unusually good hours at a good rate of pay with excellent working conditions. He works for an independent family run business though.
His last job was many more hours,(around 60 per week), minimum wage and expected to work on his days off if they were short staffed.
They begged him to stay when he gave notice to leave but he refused.

weegiemum · 24/07/2023 21:16

Dd1 is 23 and just graduated, looking for work.

Ds is 21 and a student nurse. He works 15 hours a week in a bar term time and full time in the holidays.

Dd2 is 19 and works 3 days a week (just qualified as a beauty therapist) but she's waiting for hip surgery and once that's done she'll go full time. She does have a sideline doing makeup and nails for friends and others.

RuthW · 24/07/2023 21:20

Age 26. Starts work at 8. Home about 5.30pm. At least two hours most evenings. She's a teacher.

WotNoUserName · 24/07/2023 21:31

DS - 24 - 35 hours a week term time. He has a part time job as well, so usually works 2-3 days in the school holidays, as well as occasional evenings.

DS - 21 - he doesn't work as he's disabled, so still in education doing life skills.

Housefullofcatsandkids · 24/07/2023 21:32

Eldest is 21, they work 9-5:30 Mon-Fri

MadisonAvenue · 24/07/2023 21:42

Son 26 - secondary school teacher so with work in school and working at home on evenings and weekends it adds up to around 50-60 hours.

Son 23 - engineer in a multinational company and works 35 hours plus overtime.

Lilacshade · 24/07/2023 21:48

Age 27 works 50 to 60 hours a week - teacher. Loves the job.
Age 25 works 40 hours, strictly 9 to 5 - tech, paid a lot more than older sibling but doesn't enjoy the job.
