What's that smell?!

You know that bin smell you get, that staleness that can overcome a home that's not properly cleaned or just left to fester a tad too long? Many homes with animals in have it to an extent.

That smell has just appeared in my home and been there for the past few days.

I can't find anything! I've taken the bins out and cleaned out the bin and bleached and cleaned but it's still there.

Suggestions?

Something gone off in a cupboard?

gwenneh · 24/07/2023 13:55

A piece of old fruit or an old potato that rolled out of sight somewhere? Those both make quite a smell.

Sparklesocks · 24/07/2023 13:56

Washing machine? Mine smells a bit funky when I need to empty the filter

Poppysmom22 · 24/07/2023 14:01

Have you sniffed your mop?

Badbudgeter · 24/07/2023 14:03

Hoover sometimes smells funky then every time you use the smell disperses round the house. Wash filters see if it helps.

thanks! I don't use a water mop, I find them disgusting.

I'm checking orifices now as I recently cleaned out all the food cupboards.

Not if you rinse and dry them properly.. but so few people do.

Lightbulbs that are too strong for the shade etc can give off an unpleasant fishy odour.

Don't know why, but this made me laugh... a lot!!

PopOrStop · 24/07/2023 14:11

We had this a couple of years ago, it came and went, we called it the death smell - turned out to be a huge gas leak! Didn't smell like gas at all!

Always found that such a hassle and the alternative is unsanitary so I've been using those pad ones for years and love those, the spray ones :)

Look for an rogue potato at the back of a cupboard, I had this and every time I opened the cupboard tiny flies appeared, emptied the cupboard and at the back 2 well rotten potatoes and a whole new eco system, GAGSVILLE 🤢

DinoMummsy · 24/07/2023 14:19

Possibly a dead mouse in the wall

OneTC · 24/07/2023 14:21

Mice?

ItchyKondera · 24/07/2023 14:42

Dishwasher. Clear out the filter and the gungy bits, maybe the pipe that drains the water?

MoonlightMedicine · 24/07/2023 14:48

My sunflowers started smelling AWFUL before they showed visible signs of going over. Do you have any flowers in vases??

Swashbuckled · 24/07/2023 14:51

A mouldy lemon in the fridge, as I discovered recently.

Why disgusting, just wash them.

Maybe it's just time to embrace a funky smelling house.

Because it doesn't seem possible to get them properly clean without putting the head through the washing machine - can you do this now?
The fibre mop just seems to be more efficient, I pour boiling water and cleaning solution onto the floor and then wash the head after use.

Fridge drip tray. Never knew it existed until my dad ended up in charge of his own fridge. 🤢
