To think the use of "partner" is implying she is gay?

DD is 24 and has never been in a relationship due to various struggles she has had in her life. It's only recently she has really ever been mentioning it in her future. It's always "partner" though and no I don't care if she was to be gay, etc. but just curious if always using that vs boyfriend/husband is more telling?

Partner means more serious than BF/GF but not engaged or married.

Can be of any sexual orientation.

I hardly ever hear the words boyfriend/girlfriend these days, other than from the very young. Partner is much more used, and it certainly doesn't automatically mean they are gay.

OP not been back?

Sorry, appreciate the replies. She wasn't referring to her actual partner but just mentioning "oh when I live with a partner" it just seemed a big effort to be neutral

Effort?Confused It's simply the norm now in the case of someone you live with rather than boyfriend, and less effort than saying boyfriend or husband (or girlfriend/wife).

Effort ?.surely she just meant that when she .is in a relationship and lives with "an other!" Most people will say partner if not married. Look if you wondering if she's .gay ask her.

I'm interested why you're posting about it if you don't care whether she is gay. Just wait and see?

Wheelz46 · 24/07/2023 08:23

@eddis it really is no effort to calling your partner or future partner, partner 😆

I am a lesbian and use partner to describe my female girlfriend because we are both middle aged and girlfriend sounds like we are in our teens. A lot of lesbians I know will use the term partner to imply same sex romantic partner and I would generally assume there is a same sex element if the term was used, but would ask the question directly if I wanted to know.

@jennyjones198080 - why is the term 'gay marriage' still being used in this day and age what an ridiculous archaic term. Lesbians and gay men have been able to marry since 2014, so nearly 10 years replacing the ridiculous fudge of civil partnerships and now we are able to claim equal rights to heterosexuals, surely now is the time to refer to it as marriage or at the very least equal marriage but refrain from gay marriage please.

I was married soon after the law changed to my darling wife and we had a marriage not a gay marriage, until she died.

I think partner is quite pretentious and sounds quite clinical and business-like

Me and DP are in our 50's and aren't married, how do you think I should refer to him..."Gentleman friend"? " companion"? because he's way to old to be a "boyfriend".
