To think the use of "partner" is implying she is gay?

DD is 24 and has never been in a relationship due to various struggles she has had in her life. It's only recently she has really ever been mentioning it in her future. It's always "partner" though and no I don't care if she was to be gay, etc. but just curious if always using that vs boyfriend/husband is more telling?

I call my other half partner ( male) we are not married .. been together 22 years

Dontcallmescarface · 23/07/2023 17:54

I'm in my late 50's and the idea of calling my (51 year old male), DP of 23 years my "boyfriend" is, quite frankly, ridiculous. He is, was and shall ever more be referred to as my DP.

Partner means different things to different generations.

I am 40 - my best friend isn’t married to her partner (who is a man). They have two kids. If she calls him her boyfriend people assume he isn’t the children father. They have been together for twenty years, own a home, have two kids and a dog.

Gay marriage is common - surely she would just say wife is she was gay. Partner means to me she has no intention of getting married - it gives me no clue to the gender of the person she sees herself with in the future.

NettleTea · 23/07/2023 18:29

I say partner. because 'boyfriend' makes me sound like Im 15

Also, if she is gay she could have a wife...

Obviously but at least she would know?

Mammalifewithtwo · 23/07/2023 18:53

I always say partner, I'll now be wondering if people are presuming I am gay Grin

Sorry I was just referring to partner being used years ago because gay people collect marry. The use of husband and wife no longer indicates sexuality.

Turnthelightoff · 23/07/2023 19:53

Have you asked about the partner to establish either way?

MisplacedAndDiscovered · 23/07/2023 19:54

I say partner about my husband.

My friend calls his girlfriend missus.

TheGoogleMum · 23/07/2023 19:56

She could be bisexual maybe that's why she doesn't want to gender the partner. Or she could be using a more generic term

saraclara · 23/07/2023 20:01

A decade or two ago, maybe yes. But now that fewer and fewer people get married, partner has come to mean ' the person who I've been with for a long time and intend to be with for the foreseeable future, and who isn't just a boyfriend'

AnxiouslyWait · 23/07/2023 20:02

I call my boyfriend of 5 years partner.. we’re heterosexual

AnxiouslyWait · 23/07/2023 20:03

Forgot to add, we’re 24 and plan to marry within the next year. So similar age range

Yes, I called my now-DH my partner for well over 20 years. In fact, I called him that long after we got married, I tended to forget.

SchoolShenanigans · 23/07/2023 20:05

YABU

OneTC · 23/07/2023 20:08

I call OH my partner because girlfriend seems a bit weird after 30 years.

A few people who don't know me very well have been surprised that my "partner" wasn't a bloke

My 25 year old calls her boyfriend her partner sometimes I think its just evolving language, I mean it doesn't matter If she is gay does it ?

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2023 20:10

Ah sorry your not bothered if she's gay or not just confused about the term sorry I didn't read properly..

Mrsjayy · 23/07/2023 20:11

In fact my 31 year old also says partner .

Zanatdy · 23/07/2023 20:12

Scatterbrainbox · 23/07/2023 17:19

Just sounds like she's not thinking about marriage.
Generally I think unmarried couples use boyfriend/girlfriend in the earlier stages of s relationship and 'partner' means a permanent relationship ad often living together.

I'm not married but live with my other half... I would always refer to him as my partner.

Yes this is how I consider it too, I’d use boyfriend in the early stages, partner when it was more of an established / living together relationship. But others use the terms differently and doesn’t automatically imply it’s a same sex partner

Neolara · 23/07/2023 20:13

That certainly used to be true, but I don't think it is any more.

LocalHobo · 23/07/2023 20:13

My DS refers to his partner (female). I think it just signifies something a little more committed than girlfriend.

Duckduckie · 23/07/2023 20:15

I had this conversation yesterday around using partner. I preferred it as say boyfriend made me feel like I was 14. Now DH but I said partner

NadjaCravensworth1 · 23/07/2023 20:21

I say partner all the time and I'm married and not gay

Whapples · 23/07/2023 20:34

I’ve been with my fiancé for 11 years nearly. Previous to our recent engagement, I always said partner. If I said boyfriend, people assumed we hadn’t been together long (especially medical professionals I have to say!) whereas if I said partner, people seemed to understand we lived together etc. I also used other half to refer to him which was equally helpful. I just found that if I used boyfriend, people asked when/how we met… and then it got awkward when I said “in high school” ten years after I’d left 😂
