To think this will be a disciplinary at work

Last October I arranged a courier to pick up a laptop from a member of staff that was leaving. It was picked up from his house and instead of having it couriered to our office I put my home address. Not unusual I have seen people do this before.
I didn't do it to the office as its a big place shared by maybe different public sector departments. In the past things have gone missing.
Anyway I put it in a cupboard at home and genuinely completely forgot about it until someone has asked whether it was delivered.
It's still in box unopened and I will have to admit my mistake tomorrow but will it be a disciplinary?

Would barely get a mention in our team, especially since it’s still boxed up and you can bring it straight in now you’ve been reminded.

cansu · 23/07/2023 16:28

Just take it in and explain you forgot.

TurnerP · 23/07/2023 16:29

No. So long as you return it ASAP, no theft occurred.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 23/07/2023 16:30

Would you even need to mention it was at home?
Am not suggesting you lie but why would that even be asked.
you could just as easily as locked it away at work and forgotten.

Leafytrees · 23/07/2023 16:31

I would never think to go down a disciplinary route for this. Sounds like an honest mistake!

Wigglewigglewitch · 23/07/2023 16:31

No one at my work would care, although it might cause a bit of annoyance if there was a laptop short in terms of resources.

Ohnoitsmeagain · 23/07/2023 16:32

Just to add we work for home 90% of the time so maybe go in twice a month at most.

I’d just say oh yes I had it delivered to my house, I’ll bring it in tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️

Changingplace · 23/07/2023 16:32

Wouldnt cross my mind for this to be any issue at all, nobody has even noticed until now! Just take it in and say here it is, job done :)

DojaPhat · 23/07/2023 16:33

Could it reasonably have been in your work locker? Is there not some sort of system to record these things, not necessarily your job but wouldn't it have to have gone to some IT person/department?

All in all I can't see this being a disciplinary unless you've not followed the protocol for these sorts of things, and even if so a disciplinary is pretty huge unless you work for the Trump or Biden administration.

I’ve had a colleague who left laptop at my home for over a year now. I just never got round to returning it.

Poppysmom22 · 23/07/2023 17:28

My work would bat an eye at this my old laptop has been dumped in our server room for the last 2 years after being in my cupboard for a year theres only me knows it's there and noone ever asked me about it

TheModHatter · 23/07/2023 17:31

Just say ‘yes’ and produce it.

Say ‘still boxed up as no one has asked for it’

ImNotReallySpartacus · 23/07/2023 18:07

The laptop has not been lost or damaged, so I can't see why there would need to be any disciplinary proceedings.

Is the box sealed still? If so, I wouldn't have thought there would be a problem. They'll be able to tell that the computer has remained unused.
