Climate change

PingPowKaPowWow · 23/07/2023 15:32

Stephen hawking says that if the polar ice caps melt (I think this means fully melt) then the resultant release of co2 would increase the climate to 250 degrees Celsius.

I am assuming this must be true. It was in his book, brief answers to the big questions, but the quote does not reference how this has been calculated, not what paper the fact is drawn from.

I had no idea that if the ice caps totally melt, the world would be entirely uninhabitable and basically dead. I feel like this needs to be more known about? It's the way he casually writes it.

I don’t know.

But the answer to a changing climate is innovation, not taxes, regulation and repression.

calmcoco · 23/07/2023 15:38

Climate change is a huge threat. I don't know enough to challenge or support what Hawking has written.

But I find it strange how people still wiffle on about how we 'can't afford' to do anything about climate change.

3dogsandarabbit · 23/07/2023 15:42

He says it COULD make our climate like that of Venus not that it will definitely happen although we should be taking climate change very seriously.

Bananasandcorn · 23/07/2023 15:45

i think humans are so arrogant that like King Canute, we will ignore the signs and warnings until there is nothing left.

there is zero sign we are doing anything at all to limit our effects on the climate, just talk and back patting on how well we ve done.

PingPowKaPowWow · 23/07/2023 15:51

@Bananasandcorn if he is correct then these are the glory days, and humans probably don't have much longer on the earth. It's certainly sobering. It makes more sense that the billionaires are funnelling personal cash into space ex, and creating bunkers in places such as NZ.

Hawking says that humans can reverse all of this, and innovation is how it will be done. That children, as an aggregate, need to be more scientifically aware and minded in order to give humanity a fighting chance.

Bananasandcorn · 23/07/2023 15:59

No tech wont save us, simply not the time now. Too much Global warming is baked in.

If its as bad as almost all scientists say it will be, bit like a nuclear war, probably best not to survive it.

I think the film the Day the Earth Stood Still is a fair description of what we are like.

How do we pay for innovation (and the NHS and education etc)?

How do we ensure that there is a level playing field so companies can't take short cuts to make a quick buck?

Not sure what you mean by repression.

We are out of control. Our consumption is scary.

I’m at an all inclusive, mountains of food being wasted. Parents loading three year old kids plates with enough to feed an adult- if they don’t like it they just go and fill another plate. Same with drinks.

Plates filled with bread and salad for the table- like bloody ornaments.

Sheets, pool towels, washed daily.

How long have we got?
I’ll probably be dead, but I fear for my child’s future.

notol · 23/07/2023 16:20

Tech is not green or a saviour.

We need to go backwards. Which obviously doesn't really feel like an option.

stbrandonsboat · 23/07/2023 16:21

Human beings, as a whole, don't have the capacity, intelligence or drive to do anything about the climate. Think of how many greedy, psychopathic morons are in positions of power and responsibility around the globe. Saving the planet isn't going to happen despite how many small pockets of improvements there are taking place. We're lemmings going over a cliff and we're being pushed over by the rich, greedy psychos who are in charge. And no, they don't care about their children or grandchildren, they just want to live in luxury, wield power, take drugs and fuck whilst they can.

Live day by day and try not to think about it. One of the psychopaths will probably drop the bomb before the world warms up too much more anyway.

Grumpywasthebestcarebear · 23/07/2023 16:22

So, how long have we got left?

PingPowKaPowWow · 23/07/2023 16:24

@Missingmyusername

You asked how long have we got.

I'm no scientist, but my thinking, based on reports taken from scientists at the "coalface" of the ice caps, and based upon the best and worst case projections of sea level rise, and timeframes, that have been published (but bear in mind there is no large consensus as far as I can see) I think that the ice caps could be melted in as soon as 200 years, so just a few generations before humanity, and the world as we know it (if hawking is correct re temperature) are done for.

So you're at an all inclusive, presumably abroad, and seem to be implying "other people" are out of control, but not you?

LOL at the hypocrisy 🤣

PingPowKaPowWow · 23/07/2023 16:29

@Fallenangelofthenorth

My thinking is that we need to look after our mental health, and more especially, the mental health of our children. They are going to need bucket loads of resilience, and adaptability, and stoicism to be able to cope mentally with what is ahead.

No judgement from me for going on holiday.

I would say, good to pp for going on holiday, and having their eyes opened, as that is a really important step on the road to personal accountability, and making a difference in our own sphere of influence.

OP posts:
Fallenangelofthenorth · 23/07/2023 16:29

The ice caps are thickening though aren't they?

PingPowKaPowWow · 23/07/2023 16:32

@Fallenangelofthenorth they thicken in arctic winter, and melt in arctic summer. however, the melting is worse every year (due to global warming) so the overall effect is one of much greater melt year on year.

This!

Missingmyusername · 23/07/2023 16:51

@Fallenangelofthenorth the irony is not lost. I‘m not a greedy bastard and I’m vegan if the at helps lol

Missingmyusername · 23/07/2023 16:53

@Mariposa26 what do you do to help then? Your here and you breathe and eat so 🙂shh😂

Missingmyusername · 23/07/2023 16:55

I guarantee it’ll be my last all inc- it’s been an eye opener for sure. I hate the waste. I detest it.

Daphnis156 · 23/07/2023 17:02

In all this doom, no one ever tells us what an average person in the UK can do about it- other than pay "green taxes" which those in charge would misuse and waste.
As for life in 200 years we just don't know.

Swrigh1234 · 23/07/2023 18:35

These threads get more and more batshit hysterical each time. How do these people get through the day.

Swrigh1234 · 23/07/2023 18:36

Mariposa26 · 23/07/2023 16:36

You cannot make this shit up. These hysterical wokies have lost all sense of irony.

You are joking, right? Or maybe just tell us that you arrived at your all inclusive by private jet, just for good measure.

Sometimes you wonder if the wokesters are only hypocritical or just a bit dense.
