To be annoyed that DH was shocked at the cost of a weekly shop?

DH came with me to the supermarket to help with the “big shop” today, because I couldn’t get a click and collect at a convenient time.

he was utterly flabbergasted at the cost of it and won’t stop going on about it. He said he couldn’t believe what we get through. We are a family of 4, with a dog, a cat & two Guinea pigs. One child currently in nappies. It was also the week that we needed stuff like dishwasher tablets and laundry detergent which obviously bring the price up… he thought these things would cost like £2!?

it’s actually really annoyed me tbh 😂 mainly because it goes to show how much he leaves to me to sort out. If he ever helped with the shopping, checked the bank account or even made a shopping list surely he wouldn’t be so surprised. I’ve literally being saying it’s amazing how much the shopping has gone up in the last year or so with cost of living so I don’t know what he really expects.

it was a slightly bigger shop than usual because we are going on holiday and got our toiletries and some travel bits too but not much more expensive than usual.

Oh, and of course it’s school holidays so more food because no school dinners!

Mine is the same - making comments at the checkout about it but he rarely ever comes with me for the big shop so he has no idea how much things cost. Very annoying!

Boating123 · 22/07/2023 20:11

Prices have gone up a lot. If he doesn't usually do the weekly shop and you don't usually talk about the cost of things I'm not surprised he was surprised at the cost.

Binfire · 22/07/2023 20:11

Sounds like he needs to get involved more often!

BluesandShoesies · 22/07/2023 20:12

I know it’s a bit grumpy of me but it’s not like I don’t talk about it.

and he regularly checks the bank accounts via App, so does he just… ignore the supermarket shop?

And what are his own ways of caretaking the family, obviously it isn’t shopping? How many years have you been shopping for him?

Toobusytoocare · 22/07/2023 20:13

This is my husband…clueless !

3luckystars · 22/07/2023 20:13

Why isn’t he doing the shopping more?

Ceraunophile · 22/07/2023 20:13

Oh mine likes to do this and also tell me how little his weekly shop used to cost him as a single man over 15 years ago. As if that has any relevance to us as a family of 6 including two teenagers with current day prices🤷🏻‍♀️
I tell him he’s welcome to try to get it cheaper which he thinks he’ll be able to but never actually tries (yet pops into the supermarket while dc are at clubs and spends £40 just on snacks!)

latetothefisting · 22/07/2023 20:15

yes he's a bit unreasonable to have both some how missed the information about prices going up that has been literally everywhere for the last few months, and apparently not checking your bank accounts to see how much is going out.

The examples you've given aren't hugely out though, the standard laundry detergent and dishwasher tablets from aldi are about £2.50 each?

BCBird · 22/07/2023 20:15

Send him nxt time. Alone.

Hufflepods · 22/07/2023 20:15

If someone isn’t the one to do the shopping then they aren’t really going to have awareness of how much things have increased.
That’s really a separate issue to whether or not he does enough in general.

BCBird · 22/07/2023 20:15

Without a list. Interesting🤣

Eileen101 · 22/07/2023 20:15

Sounds like he needs to be more involved with the meal plan and big shop....!

Thirty5 · 22/07/2023 20:16

Me and my husband alternate the food shop, he is still shocked how much things are. To be honest it’s just stupidly expensive to live these days.
The kicker is when you run out of toiletries all at the same time.

Xrays · 22/07/2023 20:18

My dh is exactly the same. I think he’s stuck in the 80s when a Freddo was 10p and you could get a 10p packet of space invader crisps.

Gonnawashmymouthout · 22/07/2023 20:18

I’m shocked at the price of a weekly shop. Even though I do the weekly shop most weeks

3luckystars · 22/07/2023 20:13

Why isn’t he doing the shopping more?

I do it online a lot of the time to be fair but the receipt goes to our “family admin” joint email address and it shows up on our bank account obviously.

as for “how much stuff we get through”… does he not look in the cupboard or fridge? I don’t think

I'm shocked every time I go shopping - it's more expensive each time. Even little top-up shops are coming out at +£30.
