To be annoyed that DH was shocked at the cost of a weekly shop?

DH came with me to the supermarket to help with the “big shop” today, because I couldn’t get a click and collect at a convenient time.

he was utterly flabbergasted at the cost of it and won’t stop going on about it. He said he couldn’t believe what we get through. We are a family of 4, with a dog, a cat & two Guinea pigs. One child currently in nappies. It was also the week that we needed stuff like dishwasher tablets and laundry detergent which obviously bring the price up… he thought these things would cost like £2!?

it’s actually really annoyed me tbh 😂 mainly because it goes to show how much he leaves to me to sort out. If he ever helped with the shopping, checked the bank account or even made a shopping list surely he wouldn’t be so surprised. I’ve literally being saying it’s amazing how much the shopping has gone up in the last year or so with cost of living so I don’t know what he really expects.

it was a slightly bigger shop than usual because we are going on holiday and got our toiletries and some travel bits too but not much more expensive than usual.

Its expensive everywhere. Australia is the same (though to be fair its always been expensive here, some of this is just the UK playing catchup!).
My local woolworths metro had a pack of 3 bog standard kitchen rolls for $15.99 the other day...🤔

Ugh. I hate this type of man. My dad used to do this to my mum. Looking sour faced and complaining loudly at check out. As if she was trying to bankrupt him for laughs. As if he didn't decide to get married and have a bunch of kids.

Luckily DH is not so clueless.

Aldi bin bags - not as bad as I thought but definitely can’t put too much in them.

Lidl bin bags - slightly more expensive but absolute game changer.

now wheres my job at which best buys 😂

Ill keep that in mind.

Has your dh been shopping recently?

Mine kept complaining id gone back to Tescos instead of Ocado till he found out how much a bag of salad was and we use about a bag a day!

Nappies & wipes

Amazed you can do it for £150 with nappies etc.

My DH would probably be ok with food shopping (I think I'm much better at budgeting and looking at prices than him though) and wouldn't be shocked ...but he has no idea about other stuff.

A few years ago he told a work colleague we spent £50 each on our kids at Christmas (they were teen/tween and had each had a "new" but second hand phone that year) because he has never had any input into Christmas presents.

He was mindblown recently when I told him my (pretty basic) Samsung phone was £300 and the kids latest phones were over 400.

I do our shopping. Dh will come when he's available and he will walk round going
'God that's expensive..
how much?! ..
I'm not getting that! ...
is thhat always that price....etc
I point out we 'do pay that' and have been for a long time. I think he is just genuinely shocked at how much stuff has gone up...but he does NOT keep going on about it, its just in the moment. If he did keep complaining about the cost then I'd hand him the job and get him to get the price down!

forgotmyusername1 · 31/03/2024 08:50

I did the food shop until 2020 when my husband became a sahd

I am in a little bubble of denial although if I pop into the little sainsbury extra I cry a bit inside

NewYearTimeToChange · 31/03/2024 09:08

You’re NBU obviously @BluesandShoesies but I have to admit that although I do the majority of the food/household shopping every week, I’m always aghast at how expensive it is for relatively so little. DH says I always tell him like it’s a new thing but luckily he finds it funny more than annoying.

SarahAndQuack · 31/03/2024 09:16

I have this, but with my parents. They are very comfortably off, but sincerely believe that they spend around £75-100 per week on food and household goods for the two of them, and therefore someone who is economising ought to be spending a good deal less. This is a magic £75-100, which allows you to buy lamb joints and steak and nice wine.

Mumof2NDers · 31/03/2024 09:23

My DH used to moan about how much I spent on a food shop (I’d buy, meat, veg, fruit and staple foods to make meals with). So one weekend I gave him the reins. I took him (he doesn’t drive) to the local supermarket and left him to it. He basically bought a trolley full of snacks, nothing for a decent meal and spent about the same as I usually would. He hasn’t moaned since.
