To be annoyed that DH was shocked at the cost of a weekly shop?

BluesandShoesies · 22/07/2023 20:00

DH came with me to the supermarket to help with the “big shop” today, because I couldn’t get a click and collect at a convenient time.

he was utterly flabbergasted at the cost of it and won’t stop going on about it. He said he couldn’t believe what we get through. We are a family of 4, with a dog, a cat & two Guinea pigs. One child currently in nappies. It was also the week that we needed stuff like dishwasher tablets and laundry detergent which obviously bring the price up… he thought these things would cost like £2!?

it’s actually really annoyed me tbh 😂 mainly because it goes to show how much he leaves to me to sort out. If he ever helped with the shopping, checked the bank account or even made a shopping list surely he wouldn’t be so surprised. I’ve literally being saying it’s amazing how much the shopping has gone up in the last year or so with cost of living so I don’t know what he really expects.

it was a slightly bigger shop than usual because we are going on holiday and got our toiletries and some travel bits too but not much more expensive than usual.

How much was it?

mrsmacmc · 22/07/2023 20:24

The food shop is getting ridiculous 😩 our system is I do the c&c order and DH picks it up so he doesn't have a good concept for how much prices have increased even though he can see the shopping bill payments on the account and moans when the shopping is 'only 4 bags'

DNAwrangler · 22/07/2023 20:25

I imagine it’s annoyed you because, rightly or wrongly, you see it as him getting at you. In an ‘oh my god this is so expensive you must be doing it WRONG’ kind of way.

Mine does the same and I react just like you…

Is he actually complaining, or really just surprised?

Honestly just surprised. I think I was just annoyed in a “what world have you been living in” kind of way

YABU, what a stupid thing to get annoyed about. of course he’d be shocked if he doesn’t go to the supermarket much

cinnamonfrenchtoast · 22/07/2023 20:29

To be fair, I shop every week and I'm still surprised at how expensive stuff is nowadays.

My dh is exactly the same. I think he’s stuck in the 80s when a Freddo was 10p and you could get a 10p packet of space invader crisps.

I didn't remember there being Freddos in the 1980s, so I checked - they were discontinued in 1979 and relaunched in 1994 - but they were indeed 10p until 2005.

mnlk · 22/07/2023 20:30

My husband does the weekly shopping and I'll admit I'm shocked by how much it costs. It's up at least £50 since I regularly did the shopping 4 years ago.

The world where he doesn’t do the food shops!

My DH is equally clueless. Because he doesnt listen or pay atrention to the cost of things then is shocked on the odd occasion he notices

BluesandShoesies · 22/07/2023 20:37

for example…. Eggs x 24 take up quite a chunk of that money

Do not let him do the shopping unless you want him harping on about how the random crap he's bought cost less than your sensible useful shop.

bexboz · 22/07/2023 20:43

My pet peeve is when my partner says "we can't afford that" when I'm the one that does the budget, pays the bills, does the shopping, organises the savings etc. So I know exactly what we can afford. Usually the thing in question is something that will save me time like a meal box subscription. I love the man and he pulls his weight in other ways but... rrrrrgh!

With today’s prices I actually think it’s quite impressive you got all that for £150!

GrinAndVomit · 22/07/2023 20:50

My husband was shocked when I told him in passing how much our weekly shop had grow to.
In fairness, I couldn’t tell you how much petrol is because he takes my car every Sunday and fills it up for me.
Swings and roundabouts.

Although I’m trying out some much cheaper bin bags so they might end up being shit 😂

I send dh screen shots of the shopping. Just so he knows the cost

Which male member of the Cabinet is he @BluesandShoesies ?

ResponsibleWalrus · 22/07/2023 20:54

I'm impressed you did a big shop for a big family for £150. It's just me and DH here and we're averaging about £120, up from our average of £90 last year. Admittedly we buy some expensive things- we mostly cook from scratch but use expensive ingredients like rose harissa and good olive oil- but I'm vegetarian so we eat vegetarian 95% of the time, he only occasionally eats meat.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/07/2023 20:56

DP does the day to day shopping whilst I do the big and expensive bulk orders. As such, I had no idea that some of the things I liked had got quite so expensive. When I realised, it made sense why he wasn't buying them anymore when I'd assumed they weren't in stock or he'd decided to try something else.

He wasn't angry with me for not knowing, though. That seems a bit over the top.

Hbh17 · 22/07/2023 20:56

My husband would have no idea either, but he rarely goes shopping and we have separate bank accounts, so how would he know? I'm sure there are things he spends money on that would surprise me too.
